Chapter 13

Meng Xin wasn’t sure what compelled him, but he went out of his way to add the confession page’s account.

He opened the page’s feed and searched for “Bian Ting.”

And wow—he hadn’t expected this. Turns out, the name “Bian Ting” showed up a lot on the confession wall.

Confession Wall: “Hey, can you help me find the handsome guy sitting by the window on the second floor of the library today?”

Unlike other “looking for someone” posts, this one didn’t have anyone sarcastically replying, “No pic? Are we supposed to just imagine?”

Instead, the comments section was filled with one name over and over again:

“Bian Ting.”

“Bian Ting +1.”

“Definitely Bian Ting.”

“No need to ask, it’s obviously Bian Ting.”

These confident replies even made the original poster come forward and ask in the comments: “Hey guys, I’m the OP. Who is Bian Ting, and why are you all so sure it’s him?”

Someone immediately responded:

“Bian Ting—our campus’s disciplined heartthrob, a rare gem, the most dazzling sight in the library. He refreshes at the same spot every morning at 7:30 sharp.”

“First, Bian Ting goes to the library every day. Second, he prefers the second-floor window seats. Third, that area rarely has any other ‘noteworthy’ guys worth tracking down. Statistically speaking, there’s an 80% chance you’re looking for Bian Ting.”

OP: “Why 80%?”

A helpful reply came: “Because the remaining 20% is his roommate, who occasionally tags along. P.S. This probability jumps to 50% during exam season.”

Meng Xin scrolled further, finding several similar posts looking for Bian Ting.

Eventually, he found the one Fan Da mentioned:

Confession Wall: “I’ve liked Bian Ting for a long time and want to confess. Any advice?”

“Brave of you, but I’d say confess over WeChat. Less awkward if he rejects you.”

“Won’t work. Bian Ting doesn’t add strangers. I don’t think OP has a chance.”

“If you ask me, just go for it! I’m in the same major as Bian Ting—he has class in C306 tomorrow afternoon. That’s as much as I can help, bro.”

The OP hadn’t asked for their post to be anonymized and was actively engaging in the comments, chatting excitedly with others.

“Yeah, I don’t have Bian Ting’s WeChat. He probably doesn’t even know me.”

“Makes sense. I’ll just go for it then.”

“Are you serious? C306, you sure?”

Meng Xin clicked into the OP’s profile.

Just as Fan Da suspected, judging by the profile picture and bio, this person was most likely a guy.

Turns out, there were quite a few gay students at their school.

Meng Xin had always known that Bian Ting was popular among the girls. But today, for the first time, he realized that plenty of guys were into him too.

Though judging someone by appearances wasn’t fair, Meng Xin still couldn’t help but make some assumptions based on this guy’s profile picture, bio, and way of speaking.

And the more he looked, the less trustworthy this person seemed.

A black-and-white anime profile picture? Suspicious.

A flashy English username? Definitely sketchy.

A pretentious, poetic bio? Major red flag.

On top of that, under the post, this guy had summoned a whole crowd—guys, girls, all sorts of people—turning this into a massive spectacle.

One look, and Meng Xin knew this guy was bad news.

The final straw?

Someone had commented: “XX, you player, out here fishing again? Not even sparing the most prized catch of our school?”

A total player!

Meng Xin had never met this guy in his life, but he had already mentally filed him under “certified scumbag.”

And the thought of this scumbag confessing to Bian Ting?

Yeah. That did not sit right with him.

—No way was he letting some player taint his good bro, Bian Ting!

Meng Xin sent a message to Fan Da: 【I don’t think this guy is reliable.】

Fan Da: 【Who, you?】

Meng Xin: 【The one on the confession wall who said he was going to confess to Bian Ting.】

Meng Xin took a screenshot of that person’s profile and the comments under the confession post, then sent it over.

Meng Xin: 【Take a look. What do you think?】

Fan Da: 【I get it.】

Meng Xin, feeling like he had finally found someone who understood him, replied emotionally: 【Right? You also think this guy is unreliable!!】

But at the same moment he sent that message, Fan Da also sent one back: 【You just don’t want Bian Ting to date someone else.】

Meng Xin: 【.】

Meng Xin: 【You don’t get it at all.】

Fan Da: 【I do. Right now, your feelings are just like the big yellow dog that pees at the village entrance every day. One day, a little black dog rolls around in your usual spot and rubs off two of its hairs. You feel like your territory has been invaded, so you’re upset, right?】

Meng Xin: 【.】

Meng Xin: 【Your analogy is terrible. Don’t use it again.】

Meng Xin: 【No!!!】

Meng Xin: 【It’s not that I don’t want Bian Ting to date someone else. I just think this guy is unreliable, and I don’t want my good buddy to suffer in a relationship.】

Fan Da: 【Can you tell him that?】

Meng Xin, coldly refusing: 【No.】

Fan Da sent an “OK” emoji and then said: 【Fine, I won’t get into deep logic with you, you wouldn’t understand anyway.】

Fan Da: 【But as your friend, I do have one piece of advice for you.】

Meng Xin, immediately sensing danger: 【Don’t.】

Fan Da: 【Go pee on your territory.】

Meng Xin replied with three long rows of ellipses, expressing his speechlessness.

Meng Xin was leaning back on his chair, playing with his phone while sneakily observing Bian Ting.

Every now and then, he would glance at Bian Ting, then go back to his phone. The funny video he had open had been playing the same frame for the past half hour.

Bian Ting was still reading his mystery novel, but for some reason, his reading speed had slowed down significantly. Meng Xin had stolen glances at him so many times, yet he still hadn’t turned a single page.

After ten minutes, Bian Ting finally pushed his book aside and turned his head to stare at Meng Xin.

“What do you want to say this time?”

Meng Xin immediately started rolling his neck and rubbing his shoulders, making a show of it. “Neck pain.”

“Painful thirty times in one minute?”

Meng Xin sulkily stopped his fake movements.

“Can’t I just look at you?” Meng Xin’s sneaky peeks had been completely exposed, so he decided to just give up and own it. “I’m curious.”

“Sure.” Bian Ting was surprisingly generous. “Look as much as you want.”

Since Bian Ting had given permission, Meng Xin naturally stopped pretending and openly observed him.

After a while, he saw Bian Ting close his book and stand up.

With a loud “clack”, the chair that had been tilted backward landed back on all four legs, and the person sitting on it instantly jumped up.

“Where are you going? I’ll go with you.”

“To pick up a package.” Bian Ting glanced at him. “Do you have one to pick up?”

Meng Xin didn’t, but he still said, “Wait for me!”

Bian Ting looked at him strangely. “You’re coming too?”

The school’s package station was all the way at the side gate, even farther than the cafeteria. Normally, if Meng Xin had a package, he would make Bian Ting pick it up for him because he was too lazy to go himself.

But now, Meng Xin nodded wildly. “Yeah, yeah, yeah.”

Meng Xin clung to Bian Ting like sticky candy the entire day.

When Bian Ting went to pick up his package, Meng Xin followed.
When Bian Ting went to the cafeteria, Meng Xin followed.
When Bian Ting went to the library, Meng Xin followed.

Even when Bian Ting went to the restroom, Meng Xin insisted on standing right next to him.

Not only was he following Bian Ting everywhere, but he also kept glancing around cautiously, making sure no shady characters had the chance to approach.

Bian Ting had no idea about the elaborate drama unfolding in Meng Xin’s head. He just felt like he had somehow received 200 yuan from a stranger on the street for no reason.

By the time afternoon classes were about to start, Bian Ting finally turned to Meng Xin and asked, “Why have you been following me all day?”

“Can’t I just want to hang out with you?” Meng Xin blurted out an excuse. “I’m curious about a day in the life of a gay guy.”

“That’s fine,” Bian Ting said, “but your next class is in A208. You need to turn right here.”

“Is it?”

Meng Xin opened his schedule and checked. Sure enough, Bian Ting was right.

“Alright then.” Meng Xin waved reluctantly. “I’m off. Bye-bye.”

“Okay, see you tonight.”

Meng Xin had only taken a couple of steps when something suddenly occurred to him, and he turned back.

“Bian Ting!”

Bian Ting hadn’t gone far yet. Hearing his name, he turned around.

“What’s wrong?”

Meng Xin ran up to him, hesitating several times, his face gradually turning red. After struggling for a while, he finally said:

“You’re not allowed to talk to strangers!”

“Why?”

Meng Xin had no idea how to explain. He couldn’t just say, “Someone wants to confess to you, and I think they’re unreliable,” right?

“Just because.”

“No talking in class, no talking after class, and definitely no talking on your way back to the dorm.” Meng Xin declared forcefully. “Basically, whenever I’m not around, you’re not allowed to talk to strangers.”

These demands were beyond unreasonable. Bian Ting had never seen Meng Xin act this possessive before—like a tiny crab waving its pincers menacingly.

Bian Ting lowered his head and chuckled.

“That’s a lot of rules,” he teased. “Why don’t you just lock me up?”

Meng Xin actually considered it for a second. “Oh? Can I?”

“Not right now, I have class.”

Saying that, Bian Ting grabbed Meng Xin’s hand and placed a small object in his palm.

“But you can have this.”

“What is it?”

“My key.”

Meng Xin looked down. It was a dorm key.

Today, Huang Wenjie and Gao Yinghang were both staying out late. By giving his key to Meng Xin, Bian Ting was basically making it so he couldn’t get into the dorm unless Meng Xin was there.

“I’ll come find you after class. Don’t wander off, little curious cat.”
