Chapter 22
After a while, Shen Yuzhe finally heard some noise, marveling at Little Wolf’s keen perception.
There were many people approaching, and it seemed like they were all headed in their direction!
Shen Yuzhe was startled. How did those people know that he and Little Wolf were hiding in this place? Could Little Wolf handle so many people on his own?
As he contemplated a new escape plan, Shen Yuzhe heard footsteps from the opposite direction as well.
…They were surrounded from both sides!?
Shen Yuzhe became nervous. Just then, the footsteps abruptly stopped about a foot away, and his heart skipped a beat.
After a while, a familiar voice spoke, “Aes, this isn’t a one-on-one duel anymore. We’re many, and you’re just one. No matter how skilled you are, you can’t possibly take on all seven of us…”
It was Mar’s voice.
Only now did Shen Yuzhe confirm that their target wasn’t him. He breathed a half-sigh of relief and used the nearby thatch for cover as he discreetly peeked outside.
He saw seven or eight people standing about a foot away, surrounding Aes in the center, intending to trouble him.
This situation wasn’t unexpected for Shen Yuzhe. Currently, he and Mina held the gold card and another advanced card. Aes had drawn the only advanced card on the field, and the others couldn’t find better cards. Thus, they would naturally target him.
Furthermore, Aes had provoked resentment last time, and this game was a perfect opportunity for Mar to seek personal revenge…
Shen Yuzhe clenched his fist and continued to listen intently.
Mar said in a strange tone, “We don’t want to make this situation too ugly, considering we’ll still be mingling in the same place later. I just want to trade a card with you. Hehe, what do you think? Want to cooperate?”
By the end of his words, he had a confident and self-satisfied demeanor.
Aes suddenly chuckled at his words and said, “How do you know I’m alone?”
Shen Yuzhe was puzzled. Not alone? Could it be that Aes had allies? Who?
Mar glanced around the surroundings from the corner of his eye and scoffed, “You don’t need to bluff me. Do you think I’d fall for that?”
But in the next second, Aes directed his gaze toward their hidden position and said, “How much longer do you plan to watch the commotion from the shadows? Come out and lend a hand.”
This time, both Shen Yuzhe and Little Wolf were caught off guard—when did Aes discover them!?
No, that’s not right… Aes used the word “you,” which meant he only found one person!
Who was it? Himself? Or Little Wolf?
Shen Yuzhe glanced at the hidden Little Wolf behind the tree. The latter was just as tense.
They had been hiding carefully and didn’t realize when Kai appeared near them. He was so close that if Little Wolf lifted a leaf, he could see Kai’s face!
Both of them were filled with anxiety, especially Shen Yuzhe. He thought about how he had advised Little Wolf to assess the situation from the shadows. What if they encountered a skilled opponent? Maybe all those words had been heard by Kai, who was truly hidden beside them… That would be like a mantis hunting a cicada while the oriole stands by!
But they didn’t notice Kai at all. How did Aes discover him? Could it be that Aes’ perceptiveness was beyond that of both him and Little Wolf?
Shen Yuzhe was startled by his own thoughts, breaking out in a cold sweat.
Fortunately, Kai took the initiative to reveal his presence, clearly intending to help.
Shen Yuzhe didn’t dare to move recklessly and continued to stay low, watching the situation unfold.
Kai’s appearance caused the expressions of everyone surrounding Aes to change dramatically. Two even started to retreat quietly.
Facing Aes, the seven of them had the upper hand, but with Kai joining in, the situation had changed. After all, these two were considered the strongest individuals in the Zoe’s Sandbox.
The collaboration of two powerhouses could result in an unpredictable outcome!
Mar stared at Kai as he approached step by step, displaying a mix of hatred and annoyance. “You… You shouldn’t meddle in this! I want Aes’ card! This has nothing to do with you!”
Kai didn’t respond. He had always given off an isolated and indifferent vibe. Such a personality easily made enemies in a social setting, yet until now, no one had dared to openly oppose him. Anyone who had crossed swords with Kai knew that he was nearly invincible in one-on-one combat.
At this moment, Mar’s face clearly revealed his wariness and resentment towards Kai’s formidable strength. He had had enough under the shadow of the latter’s might!
Though there were seven of them, they had never had the chance to fight Kai together. He was too elusive, appearing only during matches. But now, things were different. Despite Aes and Kai teaming up, their side still had a numerical advantage.
“If you interfere, don’t blame us for being impolite!” Mar issued a final warning.
Kai remained silent in the face of his words. He seemed disinclined to speak about anything that didn’t hold meaning.
However, his continued approach provided Mar with the clearest answer—he disregarded the warning completely.
Mar was infuriated and charged towards Kai.
Others were inspired by his actions and surged forward, determined to fight tooth and nail while the opportunity presented itself.
This was Kai. If they managed to defeat him together, they could end his reign as the king in the sandbox!
Subsequently, whether it was Shen Yuzhe and Little Wolf in the arena or the spectators outside, they all witnessed a spectacular and brutal massacre.
Kai’s figure moved like lightning among his opponents, swiftly maneuvering between them. His hands were like blades, his palms were like edges, and his arms extended and retracted, accompanied by muffled groans and cries of agony.
He confused his adversaries, making them spin around in circles, holding their eyes and fists up, unable to even identify their targets.
After Kai had dispatched four people, Aes had only dealt with one.
Two of the weaker ones fled, and Kai couldn’t be bothered to chase them.
Mar was the most stubborn. He struggled to get up time and time again, but Kai finally grabbed him by the collar with one hand and delivered a heavy elbow to his temple with the other. Mar’s eyes rolled back, and he fell unconscious.
In just a short while, the ground was littered with bodies, some weakly groaning, others unconscious like Mar.
If they could truly kill, those people would be corpses by now.
“Oh my God, how does he do it?” someone in the spectator area exclaimed, hand over mouth.
“As expected of Kai, he’s never disappointed me!”
“This is an exquisitely executed combat, it’s like an art form…”
People were discussing animatedly, and Steven was filled with envy. “Zoe’s Sandbox, I suspect you’ve done some genetic modifications on Kai…”
Zoe’s Sandbox chuckled softly. “When we found him at the M-7 Base, I had the same suspicion.”
Steven gritted his teeth. “To be able to find such a high-quality individual in that kind of place, it’s truly enviable!”
Evan was also awestruck. Although he had seen Kai in the scavenger game before, their main task had been to find Mina. So, he hadn’t witnessed Kai’s many confrontations with others. This time, he was genuinely amazed.
Evan couldn’t help but mutter, “If that Kai is human like us, he’s practically a human weapon, right? I bet even the special forces trained by countries wouldn’t be his match…”
Another person nearby chimed in, “Yeah, it’s really frightening. Thankfully, they’re just little people.”
Someone in the arena who understood a bit of physics provided an explanation, “The weight of little people is different from ours. When they move and jump, they feel as light as feathers, almost like they’re flying. But if they turn into humans, their mass increases, and they can’t achieve that level of movement.”
Another person added, “It’s hard to say. Didn’t the ancient Chinese have a martial art called ‘kung fu’? They say people who mastered ‘kung fu’ could fly around in trees, just like how Kai appeared and disappeared in the arena.”
…
They discussed eagerly, while the individuals in the arena didn’t stop their respective “performances.”
Aes tied up his silver hair with some thin grass, expressing gratitude to Kai. “Thanks.”
Kai replied, “No need. I don’t like being indebted to others. I’m clear now.”
“So, you do understand gratitude. I thought you were a cold-blooded creature…” Aes teased him, then nodded toward a direction. “It seems there are two little guys still watching. I don’t know if they want to steal cards. Could you handle them for me? I’ll take my leave.”
Kai turned his head and followed Aes’ gesture, his icy gaze piercing through the gaps in the thatch, fixing on Shen Yuzhe.
Shen Yuzhe was so startled that his whole body trembled, almost collapsing to the ground.
“He’s so terrifying…” a voice sounded nearby. Shen Yuzhe turned his head slightly and was surprised to see that Little Wolf had somehow jumped down from the tree. He was now crouched by his side, huddled with his shoulders raised!
At this glance, something seemed to remind Little Wolf of a certain fact. He immediately reacted, his face twisting into a menacing expression as he launched a palm strike towards Shen Yuzhe’s chest!
Shen Yuzhe nearly spat out blood!
Then, Little Wolf swiftly grabbed the cards from Shen Yuzhe and hissed, “Don’t blame me for breaking my promise. There’s no way I can beat that freak. If you want the card, deal with it yourself!”
Shen Yuzhe glared angrily in the direction Little Wolf had rapidly fled. With this, the guilt he felt for deceiving Little Wolf earlier evaporated in an instant.
Idiot. When you realize this isn’t a gold card, let’s see where you’ll go to cry!
By now, Kai had flipped over and jumped into the thatched house where Shen Yuzhe was hiding.
Shen Yuzhe clutched his aching heart and struggled to step back, staring at Kai’s eyes devoid of warmth. He felt like a rabbit stared down by a fierce tiger.
If it weren’t for his memory of Kai’s appearance, Shen Yuzhe would have found it hard to equate this ruthless and indifferent killer with the brother he was reluctant to forget…
