The simple phrase “already used to it” encapsulates a profound sorrow, those few words bearing the weight of much toil and hardship.
At that moment, Murong Qiufeng said nothing more, and Shangguan Ye relished the tranquility and serenity as they walked silently together to the palace. Despite their silence, the atmosphere between them was not the least bit awkward.
After lunch, Shangguan Ye took Murong Qiufeng on a tour, practically covering every corner of the palace, deliberately prolonging the time to keep him from leaving. He had his ways to make it impossible for Murong Qiufeng to refuse, all without arousing any suspicion. It wasn’t until dusk that he sent someone to escort him back.
This time, Shangguan Ye didn’t see him off personally. Excessive attentiveness might arouse suspicion. Although he knew that someone as straightforward as Murong Qiufeng would not suspect his true intentions, he was careful to avoid any behavior that might cause distrust or distance between them.
At the gate, as Murong Qiufeng was about to board the carriage, he encountered Yu Hui, who had just returned.
Murong Qiufeng’s knowledge of Yu Hui was limited to two brief meetings, with barely any conversation. Yet, because of his sister, he had to pay more attention to him.
“Master Murong, are you heading back?” Yu Hui greeted him with a smile. His demeanor now was completely different from the calm and humble demeanor he showed at the prime minister’s residence; now, he smiled like a fox, with a hint of mischievousness.
Murong Qiufeng frowned slightly. The thought that his sister had fallen for this man at first sight, despite knowing nothing about him, filled him with worry. Seeing this man’s changing expressions now, he felt even more that it would be better for his sister to marry the prince rather than this man of unknown background.
“Master Yu,” he responded politely, not wanting to engage in much conversation.
However, Yu Hui approached him with a familiar ease, his smile teasing, “I heard from the prime minister that you toured the city with Brother Ye today. I regret that I missed the opportunity to join you both.”
Murong Qiufeng frowned again, sensing something off in Yu Hui’s words, though he couldn’t pinpoint what. Yu Hui’s gaze made him uncomfortable, and the mention of the prime minister made his heart sink. Had Yu Hui gone to the prime minister’s residence today for his sister’s sake?
With this in mind, his expression turned serious as he looked at Yu Hui. “Master Yu, might I have a word with you in private?”
Yu Hui, seeing all his reactions, narrowed his fox-like eyes slightly, feeling a mix of admiration and pity for this pure-hearted young man. What an unfortunate fate to have caught Shangguan Ye’s eye, he thought. But outwardly, he still smiled and nodded, “Of course.”
They didn’t go far, stopping at a quiet spot. Murong Qiufeng got straight to the point, “Master Yu, I have a question. Please, answer truthfully. What are your thoughts on my sister, Yun’er?”
Although his question was somewhat indirect, Yu Hui, being smart, understood exactly what he was getting at. Recalling his agreement with Shangguan Ye the night before, his smile softened, showing a hint of regret and disappointment. “To be honest, I was indeed smitten with Yun’er at first sight. But unfortunately, I was too late. I am aware of her engagement to Brother Ye. Rest assured, a gentleman does not steal another’s love. I will not interfere.”
Listening to Yu Hui’s words, seeing his expression of sorrow and bitterness, Murong Qiufeng couldn’t help but feel a bit of sympathy and guilt. He also gained more respect for Yu Hui’s sense of propriety and righteousness. Not knowing how to offer comfort, he could only pat Yu Hui’s shoulder.
But he didn’t see the strange smile that appeared on Yu Hui’s lips when he turned away.
What a delightful person, both inside and out, so captivating. If it weren’t for Shangguan Ye’s enticing offer, he would have liked to get involved himself. Though he wasn’t inclined that way, he didn’t mind trying something new.
Returning to the palace, Yu Hui headed back to his own small courtyard. Passing by a garden, he saw a figure standing there. It was too dark to see his face, but Yu Hui knew who it was. He teased, “What’s this, Brother Ye? Already pining after just a short separation?”
Shangguan Ye’s icy gaze didn’t change at Yu Hui’s sarcastic remark. He simply looked at him coldly, his eyes like sharp blades, carrying a deadly chill. “Stay away from him. Don’t provoke him.”
Yu Hui, seeing the seriousness in Shangguan Ye’s eyes, stopped smiling and frowned, looking at him suspiciously, “Are you serious?”
“This is none of your concern. Just remember my words.” Shangguan Ye said coldly, then turned and merged into the night, his demeanor and tone completely different from when he was with Murong Qiufeng, almost like he had a split personality.
Watching him leave, Yu Hui’s lips curled into a meaningful smile. He touched his chin thoughtfully. “Interesting.” It seemed this cold and ruthless man had truly fallen for someone. That little guy must have quite the charm. His curiosity was piqued.
Back in his own courtyard, Shangguan Ye glanced at the red-clad figure kneeling at the door, ignored him, and walked straight into the room, leaving the door open.
Luo Yin understood his meaning and quickly got up to follow him inside, a hint of joy in his eyes. It seemed the prince still cared for him. Today’s act of affection towards that person must have been fake, part of some plan.
