Chapter 7

This entry is part 7 of 9 in the series Rebirth in the Apocalypse: A New Life

After the first use, Weiguang’s speed in gathering his attack power for the second strike was obviously much slower. Before he could launch his second attack, Quan Xiaoyu had already appeared in front of him.

The fist came crashing down heavily again. This time, without a doubt, it smashed directly into Weiguang’s head. One side of his cheek rapidly caved in, and the metal that had just flown into the air fell down, scattering all over the floor.

Weiguang’s body twitched once, and he gradually lost his breath. His eyes were wide open, as though they were about to pop out, still filled with shock and unwillingness.

Quan Xiaoyu glanced at him, stood up, patted the dust off his body, and casually pressed down on Li Nan’s head in a comforting gesture, even though the boy had already been left completely stunned.

Everything had ended in a very short time. Quan Xiaoyu walked toward the young man with yellow hair.

Because his buttocks had been injured, Yellow Hair was kneeling on the floor at a loss. He wanted to escape outside, but he was too frightened to move. Seeing Quan Xiaoyu approaching him step by step, he immediately wet himself.

He had really wet himself. The liquid gushed out from his crotch like a floodgate breaking, quickly soaking the floor.

This kind of scene was extremely familiar to Yellow Hair after these past two days. The only difference was that the person kneeling on the ground and begging for mercy had changed from someone else to himself.

Quan Xiaoyu stopped in his tracks. He was disgusted by the liquid spraying from Yellow Hair’s crotch. He also had not expected that this person, who had been so arrogant just moments ago, could now be frightened into such a state.

“Are there any others? Your accomplices,” Quan Xiaoyu asked coldly.

Yellow Hair desperately shook his head, unable to say a single word. His body trembled like a sieve.

Quan Xiaoyu could not be bothered with him any longer. He turned around, pulled Li Nan to his feet, and asked him, “Xiaonan, where’s your father?”

Only then did Li Nan seem to awaken from the series of drastic changes. Hearing Quan Xiaoyu’s question, he said in panic, “Dad… Dad… They… They killed Dad!”

Quan Xiaoyu frowned. “Where is your dad?”

“At home.”

Without saying another word, Quan Xiaoyu scooped Li Nan up with one hand, strode to the door, kicked it open, and hurried upstairs.

After such a huge commotion, the doors of the other apartments remained tightly shut, but Quan Xiaoyu had no mind to care about them anymore.

When he arrived at Li Shunwei’s home, unlike the other tightly closed doors, this one was wide open. A faint smell of blood drifted from inside.

“Dad!” Li Nan let out a shrill cry, struggled down from Quan Xiaoyu’s arms, and rushed inside.

Quan Xiaoyu stopped at the doorway and took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing the anger surging in his chest.

If Li Shunwei had turned into a zombie on the day the apocalypse arrived, there was nothing he could say about it. No one could change that. If Li Shunwei had been attacked by zombies, there was likewise nothing he could do. It would simply have been a matter of fate.

But what if the father and son had survived the mutations brought by the apocalypse and were safely hiding in their home, only for a group of thugs to break in, kill Li Shunwei, and abduct his son with the intention of committing unspeakable acts against him?

Quan Xiaoyu adjusted his state of mind before walking inside.

The house was extremely messy, with obvious traces of a struggle. Metal utensils were scattered all over the floor. With just one glance, Quan Xiaoyu knew who the culprit was.

He somewhat regretted not simply smashing Weiguang’s head apart just now.

There were traces of blood dragged along the floor, leading from the living room to the bedroom. Quan Xiaoyu followed the bloodstains quickly into Li Shunwei’s bedroom. Then, to his surprise, he discovered that a layer of white light was floating over Li Shunwei’s body.

Li Nan was crying as he covered his own hands over his father’s bloodstained abdomen.

The white light was coming from Li Nan’s hands. Li Shunwei’s chest was rising and falling slightly.

He was actually still breathing.

A healing-type ability user!

Quan Xiaoyu stared at Li Nan in astonishment. It was an extremely rare and precious ability.

Most healing-type ability users appeared at the beginning of the apocalypse. Among those ability users who awakened their powers later through other means, almost none could develop healing abilities. And among those who had awakened healing abilities at the beginning of the apocalypse, very few remained after the initial chaos.

After the apocalypse, with a shortage of doctors and medicine, healing-type ability users became exceptionally valuable. Most of them were recruited by the leaders of various major factions and enjoyed extremely favorable treatment.

In his previous life, even an ordinary ability user like Quan Xiaoyu did not have the qualifications to meet a healing-type ability user.

Quan Xiaoyu walked over and gently lifted Li Shunwei into his arms, holding him against his chest. He did not stop Li Nan’s actions. Instead, he softly called into Li Shunwei’s ear, “Uncle Li, Uncle Li, it’s Xiaoyu.”

Whether it was because Li Nan’s frantic treatment had taken effect or because Li Shunwei had heard Quan Xiaoyu’s voice, he slowly opened his eyes.

“Dad!” Li Nan cried out, but he did not dare remove his hands.

Li Shunwei’s eyes followed the sound and looked toward Li Nan. Seeing that his son was unharmed, he seemed relieved. Then he looked at Quan Xiaoyu.

“Xiao… Xiaoyu.”

“Uncle Li, I’m here.”

Quan Xiaoyu held Li Shunwei, but he could clearly feel his life slowly slipping away. Even with Li Nan’s treatment continuously pouring into him, it was probably… still impossible to save him.

Quan Xiaoyu tightened his grip around Li Shunwei’s bloodstained hand, and his gaze became extremely dim.

“Villa… supplies…”

Li Shunwei was already struggling so much that he could not speak in complete sentences. If he had not seen those people take his son away and been unable to let go because of the anxiety in his heart, he probably would have already breathed his last.

“I know, Uncle Li. I received the text message. I’ll take you and Li Nan to the villa in a little while.”

Li Shunwei blinked slightly, probably indicating that he understood. Then he moved his finger faintly and said again, “Xiao… Xiaonan… please…”

“I know. I’ll take care of him. He’s my younger brother. As long as I’m alive, I’ll keep taking care of him.”

Quan Xiaoyu knew that Li Shunwei was giving his final words. His heart was heavy, but he did not know how to express his emotions. All he could do was repeatedly make promises, letting Li Shunwei leave without worry.

The corner of Li Shunwei’s mouth moved slightly, as though he were smiling. He wanted to raise his hand and touch the faces of the two children, but he could no longer do it.

Finally, he said, “Safe… safe… key… gun…”

Then his body went limp, and the final trace of breath in his chest dissipated at that very moment.

Quan Xiaoyu’s heart ached deeply, and he could not help shedding tears. Li Nan also realized what had happened and screamed, “Dad!”

The sobs coming from his throat had already become hoarse.

The white light in his hands suddenly surged dramatically, as though he intended to burn up his own life to save his father.

Quan Xiaoyu hurriedly lowered Li Shunwei gently, then reached out and pinched Li Nan at the back of his neck. Li Nan immediately fainted.

Quan Xiaoyu wiped the tears from his face.

The dead were already gone. Those who were still alive had to carry their unfulfilled hopes and live better and stronger.

He temporarily placed the father and son on the bed in the bedroom and began searching for the safe Li Shunwei had mentioned.

There were obvious signs that the house had been searched. A safe beside the head of the bed was also wide open, but there was nothing inside.

The house had clearly been looted by that group of people. They had taken everything they could carry away.

But Quan Xiaoyu knew there had to be another safe hidden somewhere.

Li Shunwei had been injured by that metal-type ability user in the living room, as could be seen from the traces of fighting outside. But why had he crawled from the living room to the bedroom after being seriously injured?

There was only one answer!

Li Shunwei had mentioned a gun.

He must have seen those people take his son away and wanted to return to the bedroom to get the gun and rescue his son. Unfortunately, his injuries had been too severe, and he had eventually lost consciousness beside the foot of the bed.

Quan Xiaoyu searched patiently.

Although he had rarely interacted with Li Shunwei after his parents passed away, it was only because he was afraid that seeing Li Shunwei would cause him to lose control of his longing and grief for his parents.

When his parents were still alive, the two families had been as close as one family.

Quan Xiaoyu had never been a talkative child and was not good at interacting with people. Sometimes, many people could not understand the things he did.

But Li Shunwei and his son had always been extremely tolerant of him. Even Li Nan, who had been very young, had understood many years ago that he should always give way to his older brother in everything.

Quan Xiaoyu was not unfamiliar with this house either. Before long, he found a panel behind a vase.

The panel could be moved.

He pushed it aside, and sure enough, there was a safe behind it.

Perhaps antique dealers all liked hiding things in their homes. His own home also had several small hidden compartments, all of which had been built by his father.

When he was young, he had even had a hobby of searching the entire house for his father’s hidden compartments.

Quan Xiaoyu entered Li Nan’s birthday into the safe’s keypad.

With a click, the safe opened.

Inside were the villa’s keys, several bank cards, and an antique dagger covered with gemstones. It was exceptionally beautiful.

On the lower level of the safe lay an M9 semi-automatic pistol and several magazines.

Quan Xiaoyu did not know why Li Shunwei had something like this, but who did not have a few secrets?

He picked up the pistol and tucked it into his pocket, put the magazines into his backpack, then picked up the dagger.

When he drew it from its sheath, a cold gleam flashed across the blade. It was an exceptionally sharp weapon.

He tucked the dagger against his chest, intending to give it to Li Nan after the boy woke up.

After all, firstly, it was an excellent defensive weapon for a child. Secondly, since it had been deliberately hidden here, it must have been one of Li Shunwei’s cherished possessions. Leaving it to Li Nan could also serve as a keepsake, just like the piece of jadeite he himself carried.

Thinking of that piece of jadeite, Quan Xiaoyu suddenly recalled the series of strange things that had happened to him.

His strength had suddenly increased, his speed had become faster, his five senses had grown more sensitive, the jadeite had disappeared, and a strange mark had appeared on his neck.

It seemed he really needed to find some time to figure out exactly what had happened.

But for now, he glanced at the father and son lying on the bed.

He would take them to the villa first and think about the rest later.

After thinking for a moment, he found a clean bedsheet in the house and wrapped Li Shunwei’s blood-covered body in it. Then he fetched some water and wiped the blood from Li Shunwei’s face clean.

Only then did he go over and shake Li Nan awake.

Li Nan was very restless in his sleep, constantly biting down on his teeth in pain. The blood covering his entire body had all come from his father.

Quan Xiaoyu gently pressed a finger against his philtrum.

Li Nan soon woke up.
