Chapter 15

This entry is part 15 of 15 in the series Rebirth in the Apocalypse: A New Life

Chu Tian laughed. He suddenly felt that this seemingly serious and cold fellow in front of him was actually quite interesting.

“Okay. I’ll wait here for your medicine.”

Quan Xiaoyu nodded seriously, said nothing, opened the door, and left.

After Quan Xiaoyu left, Bai Mingxi once again locked the door from the inside.

“Tian-Tian, that guy is a little strange. But he’s really amazing. Later, ask him if he can take us out. He cuts those monsters like he’s cutting watermelons—chop, chop, chop.”

“Is he stranger than you? You sure talk a lot!” Chu Tian rolled his eyes at Bai Mingxi.

Bai Mingxi pouted. “Why didn’t you tell him about those people? They’re a bunch of heartless bastards. What if he goes to save them?”

He spoke indignantly.

“He’s not you. He’s not stupid and brainless.” Chu Tian touched his wound. When he had hurriedly lunged forward to pull that young man back just now, his wound had hit the wall, and it seemed to have split open even more.

“I’m stupid?” Bai Mingxi looked unconvinced. “Who was the one who got injured trying to save people? We saved them, and they nearly got us killed!”

The more Bai Mingxi thought about it, the angrier he became.

Clearly, it had been Chu Tian who had helped them choose the safest place, and Chu Tian who had helped clear the zombies from the room. Yet while Chu Tian and Bai Mingxi were clearing the zombies outside the door, those people had locked the two of them outside.

And their reason was actually that Chu Tian had been injured and might turn into those man-eating monsters, becoming a threat to everyone!

It was simply fucking ridiculous!

“Well, there are our classmates in there too. At least we can say we’ve fulfilled our friendship as classmates.” Chu Tian shrugged, sounding rather unconcerned.

“Whenever you make a choice, you have to bear the consequences of that choice. If you have the ability to do something, then do what you can.”

In Chu Tian’s eyes, those monsters were not particularly frightening. He was confident he could handle them. And since some of the people he had saved were their classmates, there were still things that ought to be done.

Getting injured had merely been an accident.

But he truly had not expected those people to shut them out so quickly and decisively.

“Classmates?!” Bai Mingxi became even angrier at the mention of them.

“Don’t even mention those heartless bastards. Normally, whenever they saw you, they’d call you ‘Great God’ this and ‘Great God’ that. They were nothing more than trying to copy your answers. And then there’s Lu Na. If she hadn’t been injured and hospitalized, and we hadn’t come here to visit her, we’d still be staying safely at school right now.

“She even said she liked you, but when it came time to close the door, she ran faster than anyone else.

“She’s not even as good as that expressionless-faced guy just now. At least he knew to say he’d go find medicine for you.”

His face twisted until it was almost scrunched into a ball.

Looking at his ridiculous expression, Chu Tian pinched his cheek.

“Things are the same everywhere now. There are a lot of people at school, but that doesn’t necessarily make it safer than here. It’s good that we came out.”

That expressionless-faced guy… was indeed quite interesting.

He clearly had the ability to smash through the hospital’s main entrance, yet he had hesitated. Was he concerned about the safety of the people alive inside?

Then, would he go rescue those people hiding on the third floor?

Let’s wait and see.

Chu Tian revealed a smile filled with amusement.

Seeing Chu Tian’s smile, Bai Mingxi shuddered.

“Tian-Tian, are you plotting something bad?”

Chu Tian casually picked up a folder from the office desk and smacked Bai Mingxi on the head with it.

“Stop talking nonsense! I’m a good person!”

Bai Mingxi pouted.

He had known Chu Tian for more than twenty years. Chu Tian really was a “good person”!

“So what do we do now? Wait for that expressionless guy to come back for us?” Bai Mingxi asked.

Chu Tian nodded.

“Yep. I’m injured and need help.”

Fuck!

What was with that pitiful, cutesy tone?!

Ten thousand imaginary grass-mud horses galloped through Bai Mingxi’s heart.

There were monsters everywhere outside! Man-eating monsters, okay?!

Their lives were at stake, okay?!

And he still had the mood to fool around!

Chu Tian glanced at him, as though he could see straight through his thoughts.

“Kyoto is too far away. Anyway, we can’t go home now. We can’t stay hidden in this hospital forever, either. That guy looks like a local. If we act a little pitiful, maybe he’ll be willing to take us in.”

He spoke calmly.

At the mention of home, Bai Mingxi’s mood sank.

Ever since he was little, he had been determined to follow Chu Tian, so he had happily followed him to the same university. Now they were thousands of miles away from home, and there were monsters everywhere outside. Getting back would be extremely difficult.

Who knew whether they would even be alive to see their families again?

“Tian-Tian, do you think they’ll send someone to come get us?” Bai Mingxi asked, without much hope.

“They probably will send someone. It’s just that the world is in chaos now. We’re not at the school anymore, and we can’t go back there either. The chances of them finding us are slim.”

By “they,” Chu Tian meant the two families.

Their families had been family friends as well as neighbors. The two of them had grown up together, and after coming to the same city, Bai Mingxi was practically no different from Chu Tian’s own younger brother.

“Sigh.”

Bai Mingxi squatted on the floor, hugging his knees, and let out a melancholy sigh.

“What if that guy won’t take us in? It would be great if you weren’t injured. As long as you’re here, I’m not afraid of anything.”

Chu Tian rolled his eyes. He had no idea where Bai Mingxi had gotten such overwhelming confidence in him.

“Am I ‘not here’ now? Can’t you think of a way yourself? Your brain may have been eaten by a dog, but mine hasn’t. As long as I’m willing to do it, there’s definitely a way.”

“Fine. Anyway, I’ll just follow you.” Bai Mingxi muttered.

Whatever. Chu Tian could worry about all the things that required thinking. He would just follow the Great God—there would be meat to eat.

After all, from childhood until now, he had never seen Chu Tian suffer a loss.

Uh—

This time was an accident!

After leaving the room, Quan Xiaoyu followed Chu Tian’s directions and smoothly reached the stairwell.

The zombies on the first floor seemed to have already been cleared out. It was probably the work of those two people. Only a few were wandering around, and Quan Xiaoyu dealt with them easily.

Earlier, he had taken the time to look at the hospital floor plan.

The first floor mainly consisted of the emergency department, various examination rooms, and doctors’ offices. The pharmacy was on the second floor, but the warehouse storing blood and large quantities of medicine was on the third floor.

That was Quan Xiaoyu’s main target.

Whether medicine or clean blood, both were lifesaving supplies in the apocalypse.

Especially after he discovered that his space had a strange preservation function, he had developed the idea of coming to the hospital to collect blood.

In his previous life, many of his teammates had died not only at the hands of zombies, but also because of accidental injuries, excessive blood loss, or infected wounds.

Only someone who had experienced cruel death could understand just how important those lifesaving supplies were.

That was why he had come alone to break into a hospital with such a high danger level.

The largest number of people in a hospital were patients whose bodies were already weak, so the number of people who mutated into zombies there was also the highest.

After the apocalypse, hospitals also had the greatest number of high-level zombies.

As the apocalypse progressed, hospitals—places that had once treated illnesses and saved lives—completely became dangerous lands of death.

Ordinary supply-collecting teams would stay far away from them, even though there were medicines inside that could save lives.

After reaching the second floor without trouble, Quan Xiaoyu discovered that it was eerily quiet.

There wasn’t a single zombie.

The pharmacy was right in the center of the lobby, so it was easy to find.

The pharmacy door was half-open. There were tiny spots of blood on the floor, but there were no corpses—neither human nor zombie.

This silence pushed Quan Xiaoyu’s vigilance to its peak.

He tightly gripped the katana in his hand and raised it horizontally in front of his chest.

He gently pushed open the pharmacy door.

Nothing unusual happened.

After thinking for a moment, he tossed something inside.

It landed with a metallic clang.

He waited for a while.

Still, there was no other movement.

Quan Xiaoyu slowly walked inside and waved his hand.

The first row of medicine shelves instantly disappeared, stored inside his space.

Still, nothing happened.

Although he remained on guard, he truly could not detect any danger.

Quan Xiaoyu began collecting large quantities of medicine.

When only the final row of shelves remained, Quan Xiaoyu raised his hand.

In an instant, he sensed a sound of something cutting through the air coming from behind his head.

He immediately spun around.

His blade swung toward the source of the sound even faster than his body could turn.

It did not hit the target.

The target changed direction at an eerie speed and crashed into the glass on the left.

That glass had originally been one of the hospital’s windows facing outside.

The thing smashed through the glass, rolled across the floor of the lobby, and immediately sprang back up from the ground, pouncing toward Quan Xiaoyu again.

This time, Quan Xiaoyu saw the thing clearly.

It was actually a monster that looked like a baby.

Its four limbs were fully developed and looked powerful and strong. An enormous mouth occupied most of its head, and its teeth were arranged like a serrated saw.

A naturally born Level-Two zombie!

Quan Xiaoyu’s tension rose to its absolute peak.

These infant zombies generally began mutating while they were still inside their mothers’ wombs. They then relied on absorbing and consuming their mother’s energy to achieve their first evolution instantly.

By the time they tore their way out of their mother’s body, they already possessed the strength of a Level-Two zombie.

No wonder this floor was so clean.

Level-Two zombies could evolve by eating humans and their own kind. This infant zombie had probably only been “born” recently, so it had temporarily hidden itself on the second floor, consuming the people and zombies on this floor to consolidate its abilities.

To make up for the disadvantage of their small size, these infant zombies would generally evolve other abilities as well, such as spitting corrosive acid or breathing fire.

In his previous life, Quan Xiaoyu had once surrounded and hunted down one of these zombies together with his companions.

However, that zombie had already reached Level Four.

When they finally eliminated it, more than half of his companions had been killed or injured.

Therefore, he was extremely wary of this type of zombie.

At this moment, he focused all of his attention on dealing with it.

The infant zombie came tearing through the air again, smashing through the glass wall and charging straight at Quan Xiaoyu with shards of glass flying around it.

Quan Xiaoyu swung his blade once more.

Facing the splattering glass, he advanced instead of retreating.

The infant zombie twisted in midair again, leaping behind Quan Xiaoyu. Using the wall as a springboard, it went straight for Quan Xiaoyu’s back.

Quan Xiaoyu’s reaction was not slow in the slightest.

He turned around and stepped backward.

When the infant zombie was almost in front of him, he swung his blade again.

The infant zombie charged extremely quickly. Although it twisted away once more, it was unable to dodge completely.

Quan Xiaoyu cut off its right leg.

It let out a small, sharp cry.

At that instant, intense pain exploded inside Quan Xiaoyu’s head, as though a string in his mind had suddenly snapped. He almost lost his grip on the katana in his hand.

The infant zombie seized the opportunity and pounced again.

Its enormous mouth opened wide, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth.
