Chapter 17

This entry is part 17 of 27 in the series Rebirth in the Apocalypse: A New Life

Quan Xiaoyu could not be bothered to argue with them and asked again, “What are we going to do about those people?”

Bai Mingxi was about to speak again, but Chu Tian silenced him with a single glare.

Chu Tian said with a bitter smile, “I really don’t want to stand by and watch them die. Some of them are our classmates. But I’m injured and can barely take care of myself, while Bai Mingxi is useless, so there’s no point considering him. What can we do? Whether we can even get out of here alive is already a question.”

Quan Xiaoyu nodded.

Killing all the zombies on the third floor would not be difficult. It would have been effortless for him to take care of them while he was there.

The difficult part was figuring out how to leave the hospital.

Besides, if those people really had poor character, who knew whether he would be pushed into a horde of zombies again?

That was why he had come downstairs to ask Chu Tian whether those people were worth saving.

And Bai Mingxi’s words seemed to have already given him the answer.

Quan Xiaoyu went to the window and looked through the gaps in the frosted glass. He saw more and more zombies gathering outside.

In this situation, even breaking out alone would require extra caution. There was indeed no way he could worry about other people, let alone…

He turned around and asked Chu Tian, “Can you walk by yourself?”

Chu Tian nodded.

“I’ll do my best to get you two out, but…” Quan Xiaoyu hesitated. “There are too many zombies outside…”

These two were not bad people. Since they were right in front of him, it would not feel right to simply abandon them. If he could take them with him, then he would do his best to get them out.

“I understand. If anything happens, save yourself first,” Chu Tian said.

It was only human nature, and Chu Tian was quite sensible about the situation.

Quan Xiaoyu nodded. “We’ll go out through the window. There are fewer zombies here. Stay close to me.”

As soon as he finished speaking, before they had even had time to move, something suddenly changed.

An object suddenly fell from high above and slammed right in front of the office window with a loud smack.

The zombies were attracted by the sound and began gathering toward the window.

Before long, the zombies became extremely agitated, and red liquid splashed up, covering the window.

It was human blood!

Quan Xiaoyu and Chu Tian’s expressions changed simultaneously.

The person had not screamed when they hit the ground. That meant they had either already been dead when they fell or had fallen into a deep unconsciousness.

Only the fresh, bright-red blood that had splattered upward proved that this was a living human being rather than a zombie.

The blood and the zombies’ howls attracted even more zombies. Some of them were drawn to the blood on the glass and began pounding on the window.

Quan Xiaoyu and Chu Tian exchanged a glance.

They could not stay here any longer.

Something was about to happen!

The two of them instinctively headed toward the door. Quan Xiaoyu, who was a step faster, also reached out and grabbed Bai Mingxi, who was still standing blankly in the corner.

The three had just rushed out of the room when Chu Tian pulled the door shut behind them.

A moment later, the sound of breaking glass came from inside.

Fortunately, the door was already locked. The zombies did not know how to open doors.

“Now that all the zombies have gathered over here, the main entrance is actually the best place to get out. Let’s go there,” Chu Tian said.

“But the main entrance can only be locked from the inside,” Quan Xiaoyu hesitated.

Going out through the main entrance was equivalent to opening it.

At present, the people on the third floor were only surrounded by a small number of ordinary zombies. If they dared to come out, they could actually escape.

But once the main entrance was opened, a large horde of zombies would rush inside, and the situation would be completely different.

Quan Xiaoyu could choose not to save them, but he had never intended to get them killed.

Chu Tian glanced at him and thought for a moment.

“Fine. Follow me. Maybe we can get out somewhere else.”

That was another escape route Chu Tian had thought of long ago.

The reason he had not immediately left after getting injured was because he wanted to find some medicine to treat his wound first. After all, the world was in chaos now, and it would probably be difficult to find a doctor to treat him again.

Then, after he had just cleared out an office, he saw Quan Xiaoyu surrounded at the hospital entrance.

Seeing how stubbornly the boy resisted the zombies yet refused to break down the door and enter, he had sent Bai Mingxi to call him inside.

Originally, being able to leave through the main entrance would have been the best option. His car was parked outside, exactly where he had left it when he arrived, and that had been his original plan.

If they left by another route, however, they might have to abandon the car.

“When I came down from the third floor, I studied the hospital’s floor plan. At the end of the corridor on the left side of the second floor, there’s a small independent elevator that leads to the back entrance. It’s normally used to transport medical waste, so hardly anyone goes there. There shouldn’t be many monsters there either.”

As he explained, Chu Tian turned toward Quan Xiaoyu.

“But the problem is—how do we leave after getting outside? I’m guessing you drove here, but your car is parked at the hospital’s front entrance, right?”

“We did too.”

After hearing Chu Tian, Quan Xiaoyu instead breathed a sigh of relief.

He nodded and said, “The car isn’t a problem. I have a way.”

He had already intended to abandon his old beat-up car anyway. As for picking locks and taking someone else’s car, he had become quite skilled at that in his previous life.

Not long after the apocalypse began, most of the cars on the streets were still undamaged.

Chu Tian looked at him in surprise.

There were many things about this young man that had caught him off guard.

The ability to judge people that he had honed since childhood seemed to have led him to kick an iron plate today.

The three went up the stairs toward the second floor.

Only then did Bai Mingxi seem to realize that Chu Tian was injured, so he tightly supported him.

Quan Xiaoyu led the way, while the other two followed closely behind.

The moment the three of them reached the second floor, the sound of fighting—bang, bang, bang—came from the third floor.

Immediately afterward, something came rolling down the stairs at incredible speed, coming to a stop right beside Quan Xiaoyu’s feet.

Before anyone else could see clearly what it was, the thing suddenly sprang up and lunged straight at Quan Xiaoyu’s neck.

Quan Xiaoyu reacted quickly enough.

His knife flashed out, instantly separating the thing’s head from its body.

However, because it was so close, some of the black blood that sprayed out landed on Quan Xiaoyu’s face.

Only then did Chu Tian and the others see clearly.

It was a zombie that looked like a nurse. It seemed to have been knocked down from the third floor by someone and rolled all the way down.

Relying on instinct, it had immediately attacked Quan Xiaoyu.

Quan Xiaoyu wiped the filthy blood from his face.

His slight cleanliness obsession had flared up, and for a brief moment, his expression nearly collapsed.

Chu Tian watched his face curiously, catching that fleeting look of collapse.

In all the time he had known Quan Xiaoyu, this was the first time he had seen such a change in his expression.

So this guy had a bit of a cleanliness obsession.

He seemed to be getting more and more interesting.

That was what Chu Tian thought.

“Hey! There are people downstairs! Want to escape together?”

Someone came down from upstairs.

He was tall and slender, with neatly combed hair, polished leather shoes, and a spotless white doctor’s coat.

He slowly walked down the stairs, looking down at the three of them. A casual smile rested at the corners of his mouth.

Chu Tian raised an eyebrow.

He caught a familiar scent from that man.

An ability user!

Quan Xiaoyu could clearly sense the unusual power coursing through the man’s entire body.

It seemed that after the battle on the second floor, some kind of perception of his had become even sharper.

He simply did not know what type of ability this person possessed.

Quan Xiaoyu held his katana horizontally across his chest, staring at the man before him with a hint of caution.

Chu Tian also stared at him without saying a word.

Only Bai Mingxi asked in surprise, “Who are you? We didn’t see you when we were rescuing people on the third floor earlier!”

The man did not pay any attention to Bai Mingxi. Instead, he looked curiously at the weapon in Quan Xiaoyu’s hand.

“You came from outside? Don’t be so nervous. I’m human, not a monster.”

That was a controlled weapon. There were no such things in the hospital.

Those people upstairs had mentioned two people, but they had never mentioned a third person carrying a katana.

Besides, the boy carrying the katana was dressed casually in athletic clothes and had a large backpack on his back.

No matter how one looked at him, he was clearly different from the people trapped inside the hospital.

He looked like someone who had come prepared.

The clean, decisive slash just now had been seen clearly by the doctor.

One strike had severed the zombie’s head.

An ordinary person simply did not possess that kind of strength or ruthlessness.

Quan Xiaoyu pressed his lips tightly together.

His senses told him that this person was dangerous, and he had no intention of answering.

Chu Tian glanced at Quan Xiaoyu.

He seemed to see the tension and discomfort in the young man.

He stepped forward from behind Quan Xiaoyu and stood slightly in front of him, drawing the white-coated doctor’s attention onto himself.

“He came to the hospital looking for someone, but he didn’t find them. We’re trying to find a way out of here. What about you?”

Chu Tian lied without changing his expression or even breathing harder.

Half of what he said was true and half was false, yet his expression was extraordinarily sincere.

Even Quan Xiaoyu could not help glancing at him.

Perhaps sensing Quan Xiaoyu’s gaze, Chu Tian turned around and smiled at him.

The smile was just as utterly sincere.

At that moment, Quan Xiaoyu felt that he had misjudged him.

This man should be just as dangerous as that white-coated doctor.

It was only because he was injured that he had temporarily put away his claws.

“Me?”

The white-coated doctor had not ignored Chu Tian. He smiled and said, “I came to save everyone and get them out of here! Saving people is a doctor’s duty, isn’t it?”

As he spoke, he waved toward the stairs above.

Only then did successive footsteps begin coming from the third-floor stairwell.

Before long, the white-coated doctor was surrounded by a group of people standing behind him.

“Damn!”

Bai Mingxi cursed quietly from behind Quan Xiaoyu.

These people were none other than that group of ungrateful bastards.

Someone had actually saved them after all.

But Bai Mingxi did not say anything more.

Based on his understanding of his friend, the moment Chu Tian had stepped forward and stood in front of them, he had already understood that the white-coated doctor was probably not someone they could afford to provoke.

For a useless person like him, it was better to obediently hide behind them and keep his mouth shut.

“I’ll take everyone out. Do you want to leave with us?”

The doctor asked Chu Tian with a smiling face.

The people behind him kept a certain distance from him, making it seem as though they were somewhat afraid of him.

“Sure. We were just wandering around blindly. It’s best if someone can lead us out. I’m injured, so it’s inconvenient for me to move.”

Chu Tian answered with a smile as well.

When he said the word “injured,” he glanced at the group behind the doctor.

There were several faces there that Chu Tian knew very well.

At this moment, those people looked awkward and were desperately avoiding his gaze.

Unexpectedly, Quan Xiaoyu also spotted two familiar faces among the group.

However, he simply pretended he had not seen them and remained expressionless.

The doctor shrugged, walked down from above, passed by the three of them, and led the way toward the first floor.

“Why didn’t you leave through the main entrance? Why did you come to the second floor? Didn’t I lure those monsters away from the entrance?”

The doctor walked in front, asking casually.

Chu Tian gave Quan Xiaoyu a half-smiling look and said, “Someone was afraid that opening the main entrance would let the zombies in, leaving the people on the third floor with no chance of survival.”

That was a rare bit of complete honesty.

Quan Xiaoyu’s face reddened slightly after hearing him.

He felt as though his misplaced kindness had just been ridiculed.

Somewhat awkwardly, he turned his head away and said nothing.

Seeing him like this, Chu Tian inexplicably felt happy.

This person was really interesting.

Hearing this, the doctor looked back in surprise.

His gaze swept back and forth between Quan Xiaoyu and Bai Mingxi before finally settling on Quan Xiaoyu.

Then he said to Chu Tian, “And you actually agreed?”

His tone was filled with surprise.

Chu Tian smiled and nodded.

“I’m injured, after all. An injured person doesn’t get a say.”
