Chapter 23

This entry is part 23 of 27 in the series Rebirth in the Apocalypse: A New Life

Xiao Yu’s bloodshot eyes became increasingly severe. The sudden sound of gunfire seemed to stimulate him. He suddenly shoved Chu Tian away, sprang up from the ground, and quickly drew the □□ in his hand.

Chu Tian was shoved and rolled to the side. His heart sank when he saw Xiao Yu’s eyes, red as a beast’s. It seemed that he had already lost his reason.

Sure enough, the moment Xiao Yu stood up, a flying bullet struck him in the left shoulder. The pain and blood once again stimulated him. Gripping his blade, he charged straight toward the person who had fired.

Just as he was about to slice off that man’s head with one stroke, a vine suddenly flew over and sent the shooter flying.

It was the doctor’s doing.

He had not actually intended to save the man. Rather, he was controlling the vines to knock away every person holding a gun, one after another.

Judging from the force he used, the doctor did not seem to have any intention of killing them.

Very quickly, the armed men were beaten senseless and lost their ability to fight. Yet the bullets had not caused the doctor the slightest injury.

At this moment, Brother Zheng moved.

As the doctor’s vine lashed toward Brother Zheng, a bolt of lightning struck the doctor, who was wrapped in plants, with a sharp snap.

The flying vines immediately recoiled. The doctor emerged from the plants and looked at Brother Zheng in surprise.

“Oh? So you’re not an ordinary person either! No wonder you’re so arrogant.”

Brother Zheng ignored him. Soon, a second bolt of lightning shot toward the doctor.

The doctor swung out a vine to block it. The vine was ignited by the lightning, glowing with flames.

The doctor frowned and finally began seriously examining his opponent. It seemed that the other man’s ability could restrain his own!

Before he had time to think further, he caught sight of a shadow flying toward him from behind. The doctor turned sideways and barely avoided the sharp blade.

It turned out that after losing his original target, Xiao Yu had locked onto the doctor, who had knocked his target away, as his new target.

The doctor retreated several steps. Xiao Yu’s attack had caught him somewhat off guard, leaving him attacked from both front and back.

He had to block Brother Zheng’s lightning while simultaneously dealing with Xiao Yu, whose speed and strength had both been enhanced.

Several times, he almost got sliced by the tachi.

Fortunately, the villa district had abundant vegetation. Once the doctor adapted, he immediately manipulated the plants to resist.

Xiao Yu’s eyes were now crimson, his entire body stained with blood, making him look like a Rakshasa.

The moment the doctor saw his condition, he knew that something was wrong with him. However, he had no idea why the young man had suddenly gone berserk.

Although Brother Zheng did not know what had happened to cause the doctor’s side to suddenly turn against itself, it did not stop him from taking advantage of the situation and launching fierce attacks against the doctor. He had also discovered that his own ability seemed to be capable of restraining the doctor to a certain extent.

The doctor was beginning to struggle. He knew that if this continued, he would be in danger.

So he shouted at Chu Tian, who had already sat up from the ground, “Crippled Legs, control your little friend! Otherwise, I’ll kill him with all I’ve got right now!”

He did not believe that the person who looked just as dangerous as the doctor could really be an ordinary person.

Chu Tian also knew the situation was urgent, so he did not waste time being polite. Sitting on the ground, he slowly closed his eyes.

At the same time, both Xiao Yu and Brother Zheng felt an excruciating pain coming from their brains.

Brother Zheng instantly lost his ability to fight, while Xiao Yu also fainted immediately.

Several beads of cold sweat appeared on Chu Tian’s forehead. This was his first time attempting to launch an attack against people under such circumstances—and against two people at the same time, no less.

After using his ability, he himself felt somewhat dizzy. He called out, “Bai Mingxi.”

At a moment like this, Bai Mingxi was exceptionally quick-witted. Years of tacit understanding allowed him to immediately understand what Chu Tian meant.

He climbed up from the ground and ran over to the doctor, then half-dragged and half-carried the unconscious Xiao Yu back.

The gunfire had already stopped.

With Brother Zheng’s fall, the situation was quickly brought under the doctor’s control.

Plants rapidly growing from the ground soon bound Brother Zheng and his henchmen tightly.

Only then did the doctor have time to look toward Chu Tian.

His expression was difficult to read.

“Pretty impressive, Crippled Legs.”

Chu Tian shrugged. He stood up from the ground, dusted off his clothes, deliberately wiped the sweat from his forehead, and said, “Not at all, not at all. It was just an emergency. Just an emergency.”

The doctor looked at him darkly, seemingly pondering something.

“My name is Chu Tian. I don’t have any other intentions. I just want to borrow a place to recover from my injuries. Once I’m healed, I’ll probably leave.”

Chu Tian made his position clear. He had no interest in anything here. His stage was not here.

“Oh.” The doctor looked thoughtful. “I hope things are indeed as you say.”

“Don’t worry. I’m not like you. My home is in the north. Once I’m healed, I’ll go home.”

The doctor shrugged and left to take charge of the overall situation.

Only then did Chu Tian have time to crouch down and examine Xiao Yu’s condition.

But at that moment, Xiao Yu suddenly opened his eyes.

His eyes were still completely blood-red, but his gaze was clear.

Chu Tian was startled at first. After seeing the clarity in Xiao Yu’s eyes, however, he breathed a sigh of relief.

“You’re awake. Are you all right? What happened to you just now?” Chu Tian asked.

Xiao Yu sat up and stretched his limbs. There did not seem to be any major problem, but the throbbing pain in his head and the violent restlessness coming from within his body had still not subsided.

“I don’t know. I was just really irritable. Can I go home now?”

He glanced over the battlefield. The outcome of the battle was already obvious.

Actually, he knew what he had done just now, but he had been unable to control his actions.

He also knew that he had just been subjected to a mental attack. There was a psychic-type ability user here, and he could almost be certain that that ability user was Chu Tian.

After being given a second life, he did not know what kind of aura he possessed. It had only been a few days since the apocalypse, yet he had already encountered so many rare ability users.

However, he had no intention of investigating it further at the moment.

There was something seriously wrong with his body, and he wanted to return to his spatial dimension to take a look.

For one thing, there was medicine inside the space. For another, if he really was mutating, then he would simply disappear inside the space. That way, if he turned into a zombie, he would not come out and hurt anyone.

So he had to hurry home.

First, he needed to make sure Li Nan was safe. Only then could he安心ly return to the space.

“Tell me where your home is. I’ll take you back first. Leave the doctor here to me.”

Chu Tian nodded without asking any further questions.

“No need. Your leg is injured.”

“Then let Bai Mingxi take you. You can’t drive in your current condition.”

Xiao Yu nodded slightly, taking it as an agreement.

He had no intention of hiding his address, nor was there any need to. After all, perhaps everyone would have to live in the same community for a long time from now on.

Just then, something happened that nobody had expected.

Among the people who had come with the doctor, a middle-aged man suddenly lunged like a madman at the balding man who had been cowering and trembling in the corner.

He held a sharpened tree branch in his hand and viciously stabbed it into the bald man’s body again and again.

No one knew how much force he had used. He actually drove the branch into the man’s flesh, and blood immediately burst from one wound after another across the bald man’s body.

Because the branch was not sharp enough, none of the thrusts went very deep. They were not fatal, but they caused the bald man to scream repeatedly in agony.

Unfortunately for him, he was shackled with an iron chain. After suffering several days of torment, he had nowhere to escape. He could only let the middle-aged man hold him down and create wound after wound across his body.

Many people were stunned by the sight.

Bai Mingxi also stared wide-eyed and said, “W-What the hell is he doing?”

Xiao Yu glanced at them and immediately guessed what had probably happened.

The bald man and the middle-aged man were precisely the people Xiao Yu had encountered at the hotel several days ago.

At that time, the bald man had been accompanied by a seductive woman, while the middle-aged man had been with his wife and child.

They had followed Xiao Yu out of the hotel, after which Xiao Yu had left on his own. He knew nothing about what happened afterward.

However, recalling how the middle-aged man had appeared alone at the hospital, and seeing the anger and hatred written all over his face as he attacked the bald man, Xiao Yu guessed that it probably had something to do with his wife and child.

Actually, Xiao Yu had recognized him at the hospital.

There was another familiar face among the people at the hospital as well.

It was the man who had cut Xiao Yu’s neck in the park.

He seemed to have recognized Xiao Yu too, and had constantly avoided meeting his gaze.

Who would have thought that, in the apocalypse, he would encounter “familiar faces” under circumstances like these?

Xiao Yu sighed inwardly.

The apocalypse…

The commotion over there was quickly stopped by the doctor. As for what would happen afterward, or what the consequences would be, Xiao Yu no longer cared.

He only wanted to go home.

“Don’t worry about it. Hurry up and take him back,” Chu Tian said, patting Bai Mingxi on the head as he gave the order.

“Oh, oh.”

Bai Mingxi had always obeyed Chu Tian unconditionally.

Very soon, Bai Mingxi drove the car and took Xiao Yu away from this place of trouble.

The doctor only glanced in their direction. He neither spoke nor stopped them.

The three of them had, almost by unspoken agreement, established an understanding that they would not interfere with one another.

As long as that expressionless kid and Chu Tian did not interfere with his affairs, they could do whatever they wanted.

When they arrived at Xiao Yu’s house, he immediately sent Bai Mingxi away.

At critical moments, Bai Mingxi had always been extremely reliable. He neither said nor asked much. After dropping Xiao Yu off, he immediately turned the car around and headed back toward Chu Tian.

There were some messy footprints in the flower bed outside the house. Clearly, outsiders had been there.

However, there were no signs that the house itself had been damaged, so Xiao Yu felt somewhat reassured.

He opened the door and entered the house, then closed it again.

The house was completely silent. Li Nan was not waiting for him in the living room.

“Xiao Nan, Xiao Nan—”

Xiao Yu called out several times.

After a while, there was a click, and the basement door opened. Li Nan’s little head cautiously poked out from behind the door.

When he saw that Xiao Yu had returned, he happily ran out.

“Brother Xiao Yu, you’re back!”

After noticing the bloodstains covering Xiao Yu’s clothes from his left shoulder downward, he was startled again.

“Brother Xiao Yu, you’re hurt?”

As he spoke, he raised his right hand. A layer of white light appeared over it.

Xiao Yu stopped him from treating him.

His most serious problem right now was not the gunshot wound.

He had forced himself to hold on and make it back home, but the burning pain inside his body had already become impossible to suppress.

Li Nan was safe.

The heaviest stone in his heart finally dropped.

Now, he had to enter the space immediately.
