The oil lamp was exquisitely crafted.
Xu Muchan picked it up and brought it close to smell the oil. The viscous oil gave off a strange, fishy yet fragrant scent. If he smelled it for too long, it even made him feel dizzy.
Xu Muchan called Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang, who were running all over the room, over and held the lamp beneath their noses.
“Smell this. See if there’s anything else in the room with the same scent.”
Wei Yao was very unhappy.
“You’re really treating us like dogs, huh?”
Xu Muchan urged him, “Hurry up!”
Wei Yao reluctantly took a sniff. He and Wen Dajiang then began searching the entire room.
Fortunately, they didn’t find a second oil lamp.
Xu Muchan found a piece of red cloth and tightly wrapped the oil lamp in it before hiding it in the gap between the wooden bed and the wall.
“What do we do next?” Wen Dajiang asked expectantly.
Xu Muchan was just about to answer when the door opened.
Qiuyue poked half her body inside, her black pupils darting around as she looked into the room.
“Who is Madam talking to?”
Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang’s legs trembled, and they immediately sprawled on the ground, pretending to be dead.
Xu Muchan’s expression didn’t change.
“I wasn’t talking. Did you hear someone speaking? Surely there isn’t something dirty in the house?”
Qiuyue scrutinized him.
Her paper body emerged from behind the door, and the two red patches painted on her cheeks bobbed slightly as she spoke.
“What dirty thing could there be in the house? Madam must be imagining things. The steward said that the things Young Master sent for Madam have arrived, so he asked me to come and take Madam to see them.”
Xu Muchan said, “Oh,” putting on an interested expression while secretly becoming more alert.
“What did my husband send back?”
Qiuyue refused to give anything away. She merely giggled.
“Madam will know when you go see. Whatever Young Master sent back must be something good.”
Xu Muchan couldn’t get any useful information from her, so he turned to Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang.
“Stay here obediently. Don’t run around.”
After that, he followed Qiuyue to the front courtyard to meet the steward.
This residence really was enormous. It took more than ten minutes just to walk to the front courtyard.
Along the way, Xu Muchan asked curiously, “How come I haven’t seen the steward before?”
Qiuyue replied, “You have. You probably forgot.”
Xu Muchan frowned.
When he finally met the steward, he discovered that, unsurprisingly, the man was also a paper figure.
However, compared to Qiuyue, the steward’s paper craftsmanship was obviously much more refined. His facial features were no longer crude, simple sketches. The workmanship could even be described as intricate.
But putting such exquisite artistry on a paper figure that had come to life wouldn’t make anyone marvel at the craftsmanship.
It would only make the uncanny valley effect reach its absolute peak.
Xu Muchan looked at the steward’s fake smiling face and resisted the urge to look away. Using every bit of his acting ability, he said happily, “What did my husband send back?”
The steward giggled.
“Come with me, Madam. You’ll see.”
As he spoke, he led Xu Muchan into a nearby room.
The room was filled with cages and boxes.
Xu Muchan had no idea what was inside the boxes, but the contents of the cages were immediately obvious.
They were filled with all kinds of animals.
Pigs, sheep, and dogs.
There were even two cows and three horses.
At this moment, the animals were miserably crammed into tiny cages, which were piled together inside the not-so-large room.
Xu Muchan had the feeling that he had walked into some kind of illegal animal farm.
And perhaps because of what had happened to Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang, whenever Xu Muchan looked at these living animals, he couldn’t help feeling that their eyes contained the fear and despair of human beings.
These animals in front of him…
Were they really animals?
The terrifying thought suddenly appeared in Xu Muchan’s mind, and no matter what he did, he couldn’t suppress it.
He recalled everyone he had encountered in this residence.
From the master of the house to the servants and attendants, they were all paper figures.
Yet the animals were all alive.
There was something deeply unnatural about that reversal.
Xu Muchan’s gaze swept across the animals in their cages.
“Why did my husband send back so many animals? What are they for?”
The steward replied, “These are Madam’s betrothal gifts. Young Master went out this time specifically to prepare your betrothal gifts.”
Xu Muchan put on an expression of delight mixed with worry.
“But there are so many animals. I don’t have enough room to raise them all in my courtyard.”
“Madam needn’t worry.”
The steward’s tone suddenly became strange.
“On the day of the wedding, Madam’s family will all come. By then, all these livestock will be slaughtered on the spot to entertain your family.”
Xu Muchan’s heart sank.
At the same time, the animals in the cages seemed to have understood what the steward said. One after another, they began letting out mournful cries.
Xu Muchan could almost confirm that these animals were probably just like Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang.
They had originally been human beings.
Xu Muchan forced a smile.
“So that’s what they’re for. My husband really is too good to me.”
The steward’s tiny eyes stared at him as he let out a hoarse chuckle.
“Young Master loves Madam, so naturally he’s willing to put so much thought into you. Madam will have to serve Young Master well in the future.”
Xu Muchan nodded perfunctorily.
His gaze swept over the large ring of keys hanging from the steward’s waist.
He wondered if one of them might be the key to the main gate.
Xu Muchan cautiously asked, “When my husband comes back, can I go outside to welcome him?”
It was as though those words had triggered some kind of mechanism.
The steward’s expression instantly became terrifying.
The fake smile disappeared. His tiny eyes stared straight at Xu Muchan as he asked in a sinister voice,
“Madam wants to go outside?”
Xu Muchan reacted quickly.
He frowned.
“I want to go welcome my husband. Wouldn’t he be happy if the first person he saw when he returned was me?”
The steward’s eyes remained completely motionless as he stared directly at Xu Muchan.
But the fake smile that made one’s skin crawl returned to his face.
“So that’s what you meant. I misunderstood. I thought Madam wanted to run away from the wedding.”
Xu Muchan’s expression darkened.
“My husband treats me so well. Why would I run away from my wedding? If you continue making such malicious assumptions about me, I’ll complain to my husband when he returns!”
The fake smile on the steward’s face stiffened.
He bent slightly at the waist and repeatedly apologized to Xu Muchan.
Xu Muchan put on a reluctantly satisfied expression and turned to leave.
“Then take good care of these animals. I’ll head back first.”
After returning to his own courtyard, Xu Muchan sent Chunhua and Qiuyue away.
Once the door was shut, he told Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang about what had just happened.
“I suspect all those animals are actually people.”
“According to what the steward said, all the animals will be slaughtered and eaten at the wedding.”
Xu Muchan turned his gaze toward Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang.
“We’d better figure out a way to escape before the wedding.”
Otherwise, he suspected that Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang would be eaten too.
All the fur on Wei Yao’s body stood on end.
He immediately scrambled to his feet and headed for the door.
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s hurry up and figure out how to escape!”
Wen Dajiang asked, “Where do we run?”
Xu Muchan thought about it.
“Let’s wait until nighttime. After Chunhua and Qiuyue leave tonight, we’ll quietly sneak out and look for a way out.”
They were vastly outnumbered. For now, this was the only thing they could do.
One person and two dogs patiently waited until nightfall.
Xu Muchan pretended he was going to sleep and sent Chunhua and Qiuyue away.
Afterward, he pulled the blanket over his nose and waited cautiously.
About half an hour later, the tightly closed door gave a faint creak.
Then came the sound of paper rubbing against paper.
Something had come inside.
Xu Muchan didn’t dare breathe loudly.
He forced his body to relax and slowed his breathing, pretending to be asleep. At the same time, his other hand firmly held down the two dogs beneath the blanket, preventing them from moving around in fear and being discovered.
The faint rustling stopped for a moment in the outer room before moving toward the inner room.
Xu Muchan felt something approach him, seemingly checking whether he was asleep.
The sensation of being watched lasted for quite some time.
Just as Xu Muchan was almost unable to control his frantic heartbeat, the feeling of being watched finally disappeared.
But Xu Muchan didn’t dare move recklessly. He continued maintaining the posture of someone sound asleep.
A fishy yet fragrant smell reached the tip of his nose.
The oil lamp had been lit.
He immediately held his breath.
Only after the door creaked shut again, and a long while had passed, did Xu Muchan finally pinch his nose and sit up.
He retrieved the basin of water he had hidden beneath the bed beforehand and splashed his face with the cold water.
The dizzy, drowsy feeling really did subside considerably.
He turned around, lifted the blanket, and urged Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang to hurry out.
But he saw that the eyes of the yellow-and-white dogs were already almost completely closed.
“……”
Xu Muchan grabbed one dog in each hand, turned them upside down, and dunked their heads into the cold water.
The two sleepy dogs immediately went from half-dead with exhaustion to suddenly wide awake, yelping, “What happened? What happened?!”
Xu Muchan covered their mouths.
“Stop making noise. We’re getting out.”
Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang vigorously shook the water from their bodies, quieted down, and cautiously followed Xu Muchan outside.
As they passed through the outer room, Xu Muchan extinguished the oil lamp. He then pressed himself against the door and observed for a long while. After confirming that Chunhua and Qiuyue weren’t standing guard outside, he opened the door just a crack and carefully slipped sideways through it.
Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang followed closely at his feet.
Xu Muchan recalled the route they had taken during the day.
“Let’s check the main gate first.”
Logically speaking, a residence this large would definitely have a gatekeeper or someone stationed at the entrance. Xu Muchan didn’t have particularly high hopes for the main gate.
But when they actually reached the entrance, the situation still went beyond his expectations.
“Where’s the gate?”
Wei Yao looked back uncertainly.
They had followed the path all the way to what should have been the main entrance, only to find themselves facing a dead end.
There was a tall brick wall in front of them.
There wasn’t even a trace of a gate.
Wen Dajiang said, “Did we take a wrong turn?”
Xu Muchan looked around and shook his head.
“No. We didn’t take a wrong turn. The main gate is right here.”
But the gate had simply vanished into thin air.
That was even more frustrating than having a ghost guarding it.
“Why don’t we try climbing over the wall?”
Wei Yao tilted his head back to look at the towering brick wall.
“It’s way too high. There’s no way we can climb over it.”
Wen Dajiang estimated the height with his eyes.
“The wall is probably more than three meters high, and it’s completely smooth. There aren’t even any trees nearby for us to use as leverage. We’d have to grow wings and fly over it.”
Xu Muchan was also studying the wall.
He frowned and thought for a moment before asking, “Don’t you think this house is a little like a tomb?”
The main gate had disappeared out of nowhere, and the entire residence was completely enclosed by high walls.
It was a place you could enter but never leave.
When you put it that way, it really wasn’t much different from a tomb.
“Holy crap, don’t scare me! If this really is a tomb, can we even get out? I don’t want to spend the rest of my life living with these paper figures.”
Wei Yao’s face fell.
Wen Dajiang gave a cold laugh.
“You’re dreaming if you think you’ll have the rest of your life. Didn’t you hear what Xu Muchan just said? All the animals are going to be eaten during the wedding.”
Wei Yao: “……”
“We’ll go check the steward’s room.”
Xu Muchan interrupted their bickering.
He remembered the large ring of keys he had seen hanging from the steward’s waist earlier that day.
There had been quite a few keys. At first, he thought they might be keys to the animal cages, but after recalling the number of cages, he realized the numbers clearly didn’t match.
There were only a dozen or so keys hanging from the steward’s waist, while there had been thirty or forty animal cages in that room.
Those keys might have another purpose.
For example… they might be used to open doors.
Xu Muchan was certain there was a main gate to this residence.
When he had gotten out of the sedan chair, he had even stepped over a high threshold.
There was no way he could have been mistaken about that.
So either the gate only appeared at a specific time, or their senses had been deceived, which was why they couldn’t see it.
A large number of animals had been brought inside during the day, though, so it seemed unlikely that the gate only appeared at certain times.
Xu Muchan leaned more toward the second possibility.
It was very likely that the senses of outsiders were being deceived, something similar to an illusion. Once they entered, they could no longer see the gate.
Perhaps only by following these paper figures—or by obtaining the keys—could they see the way out.
Xu Muchan explained his theory to Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang, and the person and two dogs once again made their way through the darkness to search for the steward’s residence.
Fortunately, Xu Muchan had deliberately asked around during the day and had a rough idea of where the servants lived.
The steward had the highest status among the servants, so he would certainly be living in the largest and best room.
They soon found the courtyard where the servants lived.
After carefully observing their surroundings, Xu Muchan lightened his footsteps and entered.
Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang followed beside him, their ears perked up warily as well.
But the courtyard was completely silent.
It wasn’t just this courtyard.
The entire residence was utterly quiet.
It was as if no one lived there at all.
No one knew where all the paper figures who had appeared during the day had gone.
In any case, the silence was deeply unsettling.
Xu Muchan also found it strange, but the arrow was already on the bowstring.
They were already here.
They couldn’t simply turn back because things seemed a little odd.
He made a hand gesture and pointed toward the largest room in the courtyard, indicating that they should take a look there.
They cautiously approached the room.
Xu Muchan poked a hole in the paper window and pressed his eye against it to look inside.
Fortunately, the steward’s room was an ordinary room and wasn’t divided into inner and outer chambers.
After his eyes adjusted to the dim light, Xu Muchan discovered that there was no one on the only bed in the room.
However, the steward’s clothes had been taken off and placed on the bed.
The large ring of keys was still hanging from the belt.
[Found them.]
Xu Muchan mouthed the words and then pointed at the door, indicating that he was going inside to get the keys.
He skillfully controlled the angle at which he opened the door, making it just wide enough for one person to slip sideways through without making a sound.
Once Xu Muchan slipped inside, Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang hurried in after him.
After becoming dogs, their night vision had improved considerably.
Relying on their excellent eyesight and fast legs, Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang quickly reached the bedside.
Wei Yao gathered his strength, jumped onto the bed, grabbed the keys hanging from the belt in his mouth, and started pulling them down.
Wen Dajiang quietly cursed him.
“Slow down. The keys will jingle and wake the paper figures.”
Wei Yao immediately stopped.
He then used his sharp teeth to gnaw at the belt, intending to bite through it first so they could remove the keys.
But Xu Muchan suddenly called out,
“Wei Yao!”
Wei Yao had both paws planted on the clothes, the belt still clenched between his teeth.
He blankly raised his head and looked at Xu Muchan.
His round eyes were filled with confusion, as if asking, “What is it all of a sudden?”
Xu Muchan swallowed.
He stared at the clothes beneath Wei Yao’s paws.
The upper half of the clothes was slowly rising.
A face with bright red painted cheeks emerged from the collar.
Its sinister little eyes stared at Wei Yao, who was standing on top of it.
That wasn’t the steward’s discarded clothing at all.
It was the steward himself!
Wen Dajiang also realized something was wrong.
He turned his head and saw that the flat paper figure had already begun slowly filling out, as though it were about to transform into a fully formed paper figure at any moment.
“You idiot! The paper figure’s alive! Run!”
Wen Dajiang stepped on Wei Yao and charged toward Xu Muchan.
Wei Yao finally realized what was happening. He turned around, took one look behind him, and let out a howl before charging toward Xu Muchan as well.
Xu Muchan grabbed one dog in each hand.
At this point, he couldn’t care less about making noise.
He took off running.
Behind them, the thin paper figure puffed up like a balloon.
It then staggered over to the table, picked up the bamboo framework placed beside it, and slipped it over its body.
The steward smoothed out the wrinkles on his body and shouted in a shrill voice,
“Someone come! The bride has escaped!”
The deathly silent residence, which had been as still as a tomb, suddenly came alive.
Countless ghostly green flames lit up.
An uncountable number of paper figures came rushing out with torches, searching everywhere for the escaped bride.
Xu Muchan carried the two dogs and hid in the narrow gap between a house and the surrounding wall.
Through a crack in the wooden boards, he looked outside.
“There are so many paper figures, and they’re even carrying torches. Aren’t they supposed to be afraid of fire?”
Wei Yao whispered to himself.
Xu Muchan carefully observed the movements of the paper figures.
He noticed that a small group had already begun searching along the base of the wall.
He immediately changed positions.
Sure enough, it wasn’t long before two paper figures appeared at the gap where they had been hiding.
The ghostly green fire illuminated their deathly white faces.
Looking at them for even a second too long felt like enough to make one’s heart stop.
Xu Muchan’s expression was grave.
“There are too many paper figures. We probably won’t be able to hide for long.”
Wei Yao immediately said, “If we have no choice, let’s fight them. It’s better than being served up as a dish. If we’re lucky, we might even be able to fight our way out.”
Perhaps because these paper figures seemed far less physically powerful than the monsters they had encountered before, Wei Yao felt that it was worth taking the risk.
Xu Muchan shook his head.
“They can turn you into dogs. Who knows what else they could turn you into? There are still two days until the wedding. Fighting them head-on isn’t worth it right now.”
He thought for a moment.
“Let’s go back first. When the time comes, you two hide somewhere. I’ll pretend I don’t know anything. If I can bluff my way through it, that’s best.”
“If I can’t, there’s a good chance they’ll make me smell that lamp oil again. But before the wedding, I probably won’t be in any real danger. The longer you smell that oil, the more your memory becomes scrambled. When that happens, you two can find an opportunity to wake me up.”
Once Xu Muchan had made his decision, he carefully avoided the searching guards and returned to his courtyard.
The courtyard had originally only been occupied by Chunhua and Qiuyue.
Now, presumably because they thought he had escaped, it was completely empty.
Xu Muchan put Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang down and instructed them to hide.
He then undressed, got into bed, and quietly waited.
Sure enough, it wasn’t long before rustling sounds came from the courtyard.
The paper figures had arrived.
At the head was a paper figure dressed in gold and silver.
Miss Ling, the steward, Chunhua, Qiuyue, and several unfamiliar paper figures crowded in behind it, all of them pouring into the room.
They looked at Xu Muchan, who had been awakened by the commotion.
Their flat faces were completely expressionless.
Xu Muchan looked as though he had only just been woken up.
With a sleepy voice, he asked, “What happened?”
“Where did you go?”
The paper figure at the head spoke in an elderly voice.
Xu Muchan recognized it.
It was the same paper figure who had come to lecture him on his first day here.
It was probably the old madam the steward had mentioned—the groom’s mother.
Xu Muchan innocently said, “I didn’t go anywhere. I just went to the bathroom and came back to continue sleeping.”
“Madam didn’t go anywhere?”
The steward’s sinister face moved close to him.
Malice flickered in his tiny eyes.
Xu Muchan shook his head.
“No. What happened? You still haven’t told me.”
The steward stared coldly at him.
His eyes darted around the room as though searching for something.
“Where are Madam’s dogs?”
Xu Muchan looked even more confused.
“I don’t know. Maybe they ran out to play? I went to bed pretty early. Ask Chunhua and Qiuyue if they’ve seen them.”
The steward looked at Chunhua and Qiuyue. The two glared viciously at Xu Muchan before lowering their heads and saying, “We’ll go look right away!”
Xu Muchan’s heart tightened with worry. He hoped Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang were hiding well and wouldn’t be found.
At that moment, the old madam spoke again. Her deathly pale face remained expressionless as she looked at Xu Muchan, yet her words sounded almost caring.
“Thieves have gotten into the household, and everything is in chaos. We’re afraid you might be frightened, so we’ll stay here until you fall asleep before leaving.”
She stretched her mouth into a sinister, eerie smile at Xu Muchan.
“Good child, go to sleep.”
Xu Muchan could only lie down and close his eyes, pretending to sleep.
But it wasn’t long before that fishy yet fragrant smell reached the tip of his nose. Obviously, these paper figures had lit the oil lamp again.
Xu Muchan fiercely pinched his palm. While praying that Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang would be reliable, he was once again forced into unconsciousness.
When Xu Muchan woke up, he found Chunhua and Qiuyue standing stiffly beside the bed.
There were several tears in the clothes they were wearing, and the resentment in their eyes as they looked at Xu Muchan was impossible to miss.
Xu Muchan was confused. “What happened to you? Why are your clothes torn?”
Chunhua said in a shrill voice, “Where are Madam’s dogs hiding?”
Xu Muchan remembered the two little dogs and instinctively looked beside the bed, but there was nothing there.
He said in confusion, “They were still beside the bed when I went to sleep last night. Could they have secretly gone out to play and gotten lost?”
Qiuyue moved closer and stared straight at him.
“They got lost? Then let’s go look for them together, Madam.”
Xu Muchan became even more confused. He felt as though Chunhua and Qiuyue had suddenly become completely different people.
He frowned, but he really was worried that the two little dogs might be caught by Miss Ling again, so he nodded.
“All right.”
As soon as they left the courtyard, they ran into the steward.
Xu Muchan found it strange. The steward’s expression was also distinctly unfriendly. He gave a dark, sinister smile and said to Xu Muchan, “We’ve just received word. Young Master has returned ahead of schedule. The wedding ceremony can be held tonight.”
Thinking of the husband he had never met, Xu Muchan became a little shy. He lowered his eyes and said, “I understand.”
The steward gave him a cold look, then let out another strange laugh. In the next instant, the smile disappeared, and he stared coldly at Chunhua and Qiuyue.
“Keep a close eye on Madam!”
Chunhua and Qiuyue trembled in fear and hurriedly nodded.
On the way back, Xu Muchan asked strangely, “Is the steward in a bad mood today?”
Yet no one answered him.
Chunhua, who had been so lively before, had fallen silent as well, and the atmosphere immediately became cold.
Xu Muchan found it increasingly strange, and he also became a little unhappy.
“It’s fine if we go back later. I’ll sit here for a while.”
Without caring what Chunhua and Qiuyue thought, Xu Muchan walked straight into the pavilion and sat down.
Flowers bloomed all around the pavilion. Xu Muchan reached out and gently touched the brightly colored blossoms.
Hidden among the flowers, Wei Yao and Wen Dajiang watched that hand, both itching to make their move.
“The two paper figures aren’t far apart. We’d better split up. If one of us fails, the other will still have a chance.”
Wen Dajiang stopped Wei Yao, who was already looking for the right angle, and whispered.
Wei Yao thought that made sense.
“Then I’ll go first. You hide. If I can’t wake Xu Muchan, you go next.”
“I’ll go first.”
Wen Dajiang limped forward and pushed him aside.
While hiding from the paper figures yesterday, Wen Dajiang had nearly been caught. Although he had managed to escape by sheer luck, one of his hind legs had been injured.
Wen Dajiang suspected it was fractured.
If they were discovered later, he definitely wouldn’t be able to run anymore. It was better to make his move now. If he was lucky, he might be able to trade himself for Xu Muchan and let Wei Yao escape.
“Run. I’m going!”
Before Wei Yao could say another word, Wen Dajiang found the perfect angle and suddenly sprang out of the flowerbed, biting toward Xu Muchan.
He had chosen his angle perfectly. He could completely bite Xu Muchan’s hand if he pounced over.
But just as he was about to reach Xu Muchan, Chunhua suddenly hurried over and shoved Xu Muchan aside.
Wen Dajiang missed.
He crashed heavily onto the ground, only for Qiuyue to grab him by the leg and lift him up.
Wen Dajiang cursed. He glanced at Xu Muchan’s bewildered expression and thought that Wei Yao had better come through this time, or they were all going to be finished together.
“Little Yellow?”
Xu Muchan reached out to take him, but Qiuyue dodged away.
Qiuyue smiled brightly as she found a cage and put Wen Dajiang inside.
With malicious satisfaction, she said to Xu Muchan, “This is Miss Ling’s dog. She just came to ask for him. I’ll take him to her now.”
With that, she happily carried the cage away.
Xu Muchan watched the pitiful little yellow dog staring at him from inside the cage. For some reason, his heart ached with reluctance.
He was about to chase after them when Chunhua blocked his path.
“Madam, Young Master has already returned. The wedding ceremony will be held at dusk, so you need to hurry back and get dressed and made up.”
Xu Muchan was forcibly dragged back by her, while Wen Dajiang was carried by Qiuyue toward the front courtyard.
Something seemed to be happening in the front courtyard. It was exceptionally lively, with quite a number of paper figures gathered together as though they were waiting to welcome someone.
Wen Dajiang curiously looked over as well.
Then he saw a tall figure slowly walking through the paper figures and into the courtyard.
A human!
Not a paper figure!
The newcomer’s status seemed extremely distinguished. Qiuyue stopped as well and lowered her head in a gesture of welcome.
Wen Dajiang struggled to stand up, pressing his little dog face against the bars of the cage and desperately looking outside.
He saw the tall figure approaching from the far end.
First came the luxurious, exquisitely crafted robes.
Then came a face even more exquisite than the robes.
Wen Dajiang’s eyes instantly widened.
He desperately barked, “Old Ancestor! Old Ancestor, save me! It’s Wen Dajiang! Woof, woof!”
The person being welcomed into the residence by the paper figures was actually Wei Xilou.
This really was a case of there being a way out when all seemed hopeless.
Wen Dajiang excitedly jumped and barked until he finally attracted the other man’s attention.
Wei Xilou turned his face and glanced at the noisy little mouse. His gaze swept over him before he asked the steward beside him,
“Where is Madam?”
The steward hurriedly bowed and said, “Young Master, please follow me.”
