Chapter 49

This entry is part 49 of 105 in the series The Substitute Bride: A Mute Boy Cherished by a Disabled Tycoon

Two words, and in Su Pu’s heart, fireworks bloomed.

He almost dropped his apron and ran upstairs, but after two seconds, he decided to make Li Jichuan a cup of coffee first.

Perhaps what Li Jichuan really wanted was just his coffee; maybe he had misread the signal.

Suppressing his pounding heart, Su Pu made a hand-brewed cup, chose the most appealing mug, and carefully carried it upstairs.

He pushed open the door to Li Jichuan’s office as if by routine. Li Jichuan was already waiting inside.

“Why so slow? Did someone bully you?”

Li Jichuan looked up, silver-rimmed glasses perched on his nose.

Oh wow, a refined rascal!

Su Pu secretly thought, delicious, delicious!

Since he entered, Li Jichuan’s eyes had been fixed on him, only letting him come to his side.

Seeing Su Pu, his expression didn’t show grievance—he was finally relieved.

Su Pu smiled and placed the coffee by the desk, explaining his delay.

“How was your morning consultation?”

Li Jichuan eagerly grabbed the cup and took a sip.

Good coffee waits for no one—every second mattered.

Su Pu buried his head and typed, sharing his subtle feelings.

He strictly followed the counselor’s advice, seizing the moment to express his emotions.

Halfway through, someone knocked at Li Jichuan’s office door.

No surprise—this man was always so busy.

Su Pu was about to return to the store, but froze when he saw who it was.

The newcomer looked slightly puzzled upon seeing him but walked straight to Li Jichuan’s desk.

“Hello, Mr. Li. I’m Su Hui, recommended by the senior Mr. Li for an internship.”

Instantly, Su Pu turned pale, radiating resistance.

Why… why was this person coming to Li Corporation? Didn’t his family have a company?

He wasn’t even competing with him…

Su Hui’s purpose was clear: he was here to get close to Li Jichuan.

Su Pu stared at his younger brother—clad in a perfectly tailored high-fashion suit, radiant and commanding.

In contrast, Su Pu, in his café uniform, seemed almost invisible.

“You…?”

Li Jichuan also frowned. How could anyone just push their way in like that?

“小 Chuan, are you there?”

A woman’s voice called out, striding over with swaying elegance.

Li Shuwen appeared flamboyantly, draping an arm over Su Hui’s shoulder.

“Oh, I should’ve called ahead, my bad—been so busy lately…”

She glanced at Su Pu and squeezed past him.

“You know, I’ve known little Hui’s dad for ages. We’re collaborating on a project, and Su told me the kid is looking for an internship. Going to a listed company gives higher credits. We happen to have a spot in the general office, so we placed him in!”

Li Shuwen asked politely, feigning courtesy.

“It’s fine, right? Little Hui is smart, eager to learn, won’t be a burden.”

Su Hui chimed in, “Yes, Mr. Li, I’ll work hard!”

Using the cooperation as leverage, Li Jichuan had to oblige.

In reality, Li Shuwen had clear intentions. The cosmetics division had flopped, and she needed a turnaround. Su Fengxian brought her many resources, and with Li Corporation’s reputation, the collaboration was a sure success.

She didn’t hesitate.

After signing the contract, she chatted briefly with the Su family and saw Su Hui’s interest in Li Jichuan. She also wanted an insider keeping an eye out.

And so, Su Hui strutted into the general office.

Li Jichuan found it amusing.

Auntie, the Su family’s letters of intent had come repeatedly—how had he never noticed?

He must have had his reasons for not choosing cooperation; why crash headfirst now?

Li Jichuan didn’t speak, silently acquiescing—good, it came right to him.

He tapped his wheelchair armrest rhythmically.

“Fine. If there’s nothing else, leave.”

Among the outsiders present, only Su Pu turned to leave.

“Hey, where are you going?”

Li Jichuan leaned slightly, holding his wrist.

Su Pu: ?

“I’m still waiting to hear your feelings,” Li Jichuan said, adjusting his glasses, tightening his grip on the little mute’s hand. “Thirsty? Want some water?”

Li Shuwen froze for a moment.

Weren’t they just married to appease the old man? When did things get this… intimate?

“小 Chuan, I was introducing Su Hui to you…”

Li Shuwen tried to scold him. What was he doing?

Li Jichuan nodded, never breaking eye contact with Su Pu.

“Su Hui, I know you. You too, nothing more for now—just wait for Echo to assign him tasks.”

“You!” Li Shuwen huffed.

“Little Hui is a G5 UK university graduate student…”

Su Pu wanted to laugh.

Studying arts at a science and tech university, relying on bought assignments… what kind of G5 student was Su Hui?

At most, a rich, foolish kid.

Compared to him… he felt so lacking.

Su Pu slumped again. His resume was ordinary, his abilities mediocre…

Little Cat deflated, but Li Jichuan saw it all clearly.

Why did Su Hui get favoritism that Su Pu didn’t? He was no less capable!

Li Jichuan cleared his throat. “G5? Impressive. Which university, what major?”

Su Hui’s expression darkened. “Imperial College, Western, Art History…”

“Art history at a science university?”

Li Shuwen rushed to defend, “Even for art history, the admission threshold is high!”

“Alright,” Li Jichuan sipped his coffee. “Auntie, Su Hui, do you know?”

“Our Xiao Pu won second place at the national barista competition yesterday.”

Su Pu’s heart sank.

“Is that barista award… prestigious?” Li Shuwen asked, tone dripping with disdain.

“Of course! More prestigious than winning a long-distance race at the barista competition, right?”

Li Jichuan smiled and pointed. “Look at that trophy, shining bright!”

Su Pu turned with them to the wall display.

His trophy held the center, polished to a shine, pink ribbons on both handles.

Li Jichuan beamed. “Our Xiao Pu is amazing, right?”

Su Hui’s face darkened, but he had to nod stiffly.

“Impressive… congrats…”

Li Shuwen took a call and left, leaving only a fleeting shadow.

Little Mute had been cheered up again and returned to the café dizzy.

Li Jichuan even placed his trophy at the center.

Surrounding it were Li Jichuan’s awards—from top ten outstanding youths to under-25 talents… Su Pu’s trophy mixed in, like a little kitten.

In his mind, the trophy transformed into a cat with its paws on its hips, smugly thinking, I’m the best, others better bow to me…

Su Pu couldn’t help but smile.

Should he share this feeling with Li Jichuan?

He was genuinely happy…

After a moment’s thought, he took out his phone and shared his joy, thanking Li Jichuan for valuing this award.

Soon, Li Jichuan replied:

【So what?】

【It’s your award, you should celebrate it, everyone in the family should be happy for you.】

【But I feel the trophy sits a bit low. Tonight after work, get a base and raise it a little, okay?】

Su Pu stared at the message. His feelings… were truly being valued.

His feelings… really mattered.

Ou Yang saw Su Pu holding his phone, staring, and peeked.

He caught Li Jichuan’s final message:

“Hey Su, leave work early tonight. I’ll cover for you for half an hour.”

Su Pu froze.

Ou Yang pointed at the phone. “Isn’t Li General asking you out?”

Su Pu’s expression stiffened. He finally realized… Li Jichuan was asking him on a date.

So they were going on a date tonight?

Ahhhhhh!
