Chapter 14

This entry is part 14 of 160 in the series When a Man Becomes the Villain

The shoot for Just Go for It was scheduled for Monday morning.

That day, Fan Qing brought Jian Feiyang to the TV station early to wait.

By coincidence, they ran into the same staff member as before.

The person clearly remembered them, and even came over to greet them first.

“You’re here to film? You’re really early.”

Jian Feiyang instinctively wanted to respond—A-Qing never really liked dealing with people!

Before he could open his mouth, Fan Qing had already smiled and nodded at the other party, chatting a few sentences with easy familiarity.

“Since we’re here to shoot, we can’t exactly make others wait for us. It’s better to be punctual.”

Seeing that Fan Qing was approachable and humble, the staffer happily kept chatting as they walked.

“Hahaha, speaking of which, congratulations on getting this opportunity. Last time you were here, I already thought this young guy had great looks. Once he’s in front of the camera, he’s definitely a bonus.”

Fan Qing smiled and returned the compliment.

“Well, he does make a living off this face. Still, being chosen was Director Ma’s decision. Seems your taste lines up with his.”

That made the man even happier.

“Oh, not at all. He’s a big-shot director. I’m just an ordinary office worker doing a show.”

The two chatted and laughed as they walked. Jian Feiyang trailed behind them, looking completely dazed, like his soul had floated off somewhere.

Who was he?

Where was he?

And who was this person up ahead who looked totally unafraid of strangers and was chatting so smoothly?

Where was his A-Qing? Where did that shy, reserved A-Qing go?

It wasn’t until he bumped straight into Fan Qing’s back that Jian Feiyang snapped out of it.

“A-Qing, are we here already?”

Fan Qing was a little surprised.

Hadn’t this kid been calm the whole time before?
Why did he suddenly look like this now?

He couldn’t help but check on him.

“You okay? Can you handle filming the show?”

Jian Feiyang came back to his senses and nodded reflexively.

“Yeah, I’m fine. No problem.”

But A-Qing—was A-Qing really fine?

He sneakily glanced at Fan Qing out of the corner of his eye.

Catching the look, Fan Qing immediately understood. He reached out and flicked Jian Feiyang on the forehead.

“Don’t overthink it. I used to be your assistant. Now I’m your manager. I can’t exactly keep hiding behind you, can I? A lot of things are my responsibility to step forward and handle now.”

Even though that hadn’t been his original intention as an assistant, Jian Feiyang was still the one who knew him best.

He could change, sure—but at the very least, it had to make sense to Jian Feiyang.

The role of manager was his most logical explanation and arrangement.

So that was it!

Jian Feiyang instantly got it.

After thinking it over, he grinned.

“Then A-Qing, you’re better like this now.”

At least this way, it felt like he wouldn’t be so easy to push around.

Fan Qing chuckled softly and changed the subject.

“Let’s go. Your first variety show is right in front of you.”

Unexpectedly, someone had arrived even earlier than them.

One was Wen Wuren, the backbone of Just Go for It. The other was Jing Yuan—someone Fan Qing had met once before.

They seemed to be getting along well, both wearing smiles.

When Fan Qing and Jian Feiyang knocked and entered, Jing Yuan was the first to greet them with a warm smile.

“A-Qing, A-Yang, you’re here. Come, let me introduce you. Brother Wen—this is the pillar of our show. We’ll be relying on Brother Wen to look after us newcomers from now on. Especially you, A-Yang. You used to film dramas, right? This is your first time on a variety show?”

Trying to plant the impression that Jian Feiyang wasn’t suited for variety shows, yet insisted on coming anyway?

And this air of familiarity…

Just as Fan Qing was about to react, Jian Feiyang beat him to it.

“Hello, Brother Wen. And this must be Brother Jing? This is actually my first time meeting you!”

First time meeting?

A flicker of surprise crossed Wen Wuren’s face.

Jing Yuan had spoken as if he were quite familiar with Jian Feiyang just now.

And looking at Jian Feiyang, he actually seemed more suited for variety shows—unlike what Jing Yuan’s earlier greeting had implied…

That thought passed quickly through Wen Wuren’s mind, and he let it go just as fast.

He’d been in the industry for twenty years—what kinds of people hadn’t he seen?

If anything, Jing Yuan showing up so early was clearly a move to curry favor with him. Turns out it was just to poison the well first.

That was a bit beneath him.

The three of them all had their own thoughts. Only Jian Feiyang looked genuinely innocent as he chatted up Wen Wuren for a few moments.

Wen Wuren soon realized that Jian Feiyang’s personality was far more to his liking.

No wonder Guan Junhao had specifically told him to take care of the newcomer.

He’d originally assumed Guan was talking about Jing Yuan. Now it seemed much more likely he’d meant Jian Feiyang.

Seeing the shift in Wen Wuren’s attitude, Jing Yuan kept his gentle smile on his face—but his nails dug deeply into his palm.

This Jian Feiyang was more calculating than he’d expected.

“First time meeting,” huh?

He and Jian Feiyang had shared the same manager once. First time meeting…

Wait.

Jing Yuan’s gaze darkened thoughtfully.

Jian Feiyang wasn’t with the same manager anymore.

If that was the case, then he shouldn’t blame him for not holding back.

He’d only done it to fulfill Jian Feishuo’s heartfelt wish to protect his beloved younger brother.

Once he’d reasoned it through, he looked at Jian Feiyang again, his eyes taking on an air of tragic, saintly compassion.

Fan Qing watched the entire exchange from the side, his guard quietly rising.

Just as he’d suspected.

This so-called protagonist was never going to behave himself.

But as his gaze shifted, he felt a flicker of surprise.

Wen Wuren’s expression…

Fan Qing took a closer look.

It seemed he might not need to worry quite so much after all.

The rest of the Just Go for It cast arrived soon enough.

After Jian Feiyang and Jing Yuan finished greeting everyone, filming naturally began.

Fan Qing watched as Jian Feiyang, like a fish in water, quickly got along with all the cast members. Then he glanced at Jing Yuan, who was also a newcomer yet carried himself with a faint air of aloof superiority.

It wasn’t that Jing Yuan hadn’t greeted anyone. Even when he put on a warm smile, his subconscious focus was still on chatting with the only two people present who outranked him in status.

Anyone who could stay long-term on a variety show was sharp. With Jian Feiyang—also a newcomer but clearly far more likable—as a comparison, the difference between the two became obvious almost immediately.

Even after Jing Yuan realized what he was doing wrong, it was hard for him to blend in with the veteran members as naturally and quickly as Jian Feiyang did.

Filming this kind of variety show took a serious physical toll. Fan Qing wasn’t too worried, but to honor his agreement with Jian Feishuo, he stayed and followed along for the entire day.

As for Jing Yuan making a move behind the scenes—it wasn’t as though it didn’t happen…

Fan Qing’s expression grew a bit complicated.

He watched as Jing Yuan subtly needled Jian Feiyang in his words, only for the two of them to be grouped together in the very next draw.

Jian Feiyang was fine—he still looked a little dumb and happy.

Jing Yuan, on the other hand, nearly lost control of his expression.

What followed was almost comical.

Before lunch, they drew a task to search for meal vouchers. Jing Yuan carefully analyzed where the production team might hide them, while Jian Feiyang, relying purely on instinct, ran around at random—and ended up finding three vouchers.

He even used the two extra vouchers to strike a deal with two veteran members: you owe me a favor, to be repaid this afternoon.

Jing Yuan wanted to say something—Why didn’t you save one for me?

But earlier, he’d confidently declared on camera that he would definitely find a meal voucher himself. And since Jian Feiyang hadn’t been with him, it wasn’t really wrong that none were saved for him.

In the afternoon, they were no longer on the same team.

Just as Jing Yuan was about to breathe a sigh of relief, he discovered that Jian Feiyang’s group had formed an alliance with another two-person team.

All because of those two meal vouchers and the favors attached to them.

From there, things sped off in a direction Jing Yuan had never anticipated.

The veteran members who owed favors had no choice but to repay them, which caused Jian Feiyang’s team to blaze through their tasks. They were the first to complete everything and successfully obtained the “hunter” role—one of the show’s regular gameplay elements.

Jing Yuan was already exhausted from the tasks and hadn’t even eaten lunch.

On top of that, as a newcomer unfamiliar with the rules and mechanics, he was eliminated first—by Jian Feiyang—without any suspense.

His hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat as he stood in the crowd, watching Jian Feiyang run wild like an untamed horse.

One moment, Jian Feiyang executed a clean, stylish move, leaping straight down from the second-floor stairs to catch Jing Yuan’s teammate. The next, he burst out of the shadows and locked Wen Wuren into a hold so tight he couldn’t move.

The seasoned veteran paired with Jian Feiyang even struck a “I’m so relaxed I’ll have some tea while you watch him perform” pose, standing off to the side as Jian Feiyang did all the work. The set was filled with laughter—everyone was having a great time.

Everyone, that is, except Jing Yuan.

After filming wrapped, the veteran cast members all gathered around Jian Feiyang. They genuinely liked this easygoing, adorable boy who had a strong sense for variety shows.

“Want to go eat together? First time filming something like this—you must be wiped.”

Jian Feiyang pushed back his completely sweat-soaked hair and flashed a big, bright grin.

“Not tired at all! I think it was super fun. And everyone was amazing—I feel like it’s way more fun than watching it on TV!”

“Hahahaha, that’s because it’s still new to you.”

“But yeah, it is pretty fun.”

“Exactly. Come on, let’s go eat. Director Ma, what do you say—aren’t you going to treat your newbie to a meal?”

Director Ma was packing up the cameras. Hearing that, he laughed and scolded them.

“If you want to treat him, you do it yourselves. You think I don’t spend money bringing people onto my show? You all stare at my wallet every single day.”

“Oh come on, treating a little newcomer like Jian Feiyang won’t cost you that much, will it?”

The speaker quickly realized his slip-up, his gaze flicking to Jing Yuan standing behind them, exhausted to the bone. He hurriedly laughed it off and changed the subject.

Jing Yuan kept a smile on his face, but in his heart, he coldly memorized that person’s face.

So what if Jian Feiyang performed well?

Even Jian Feishuo was on his side. A mere Jian Feiyang—hmph.

That night, a post on a certain gossip forum was quietly bumped to the top.

As expected. It had arrived.

Fan Qing took a sip of strong tea from his cup and let out a soft sigh.

Another late night. Bad for the body.

He’d remember this one.
