Chapter 71

However, thinking it over, after Shen Yan came to this world, he had very little contact with Shen Jiaqi. But based on the plot of the original novel, Shen Jiaqi was always a ruthless person.

The original owner had a car accident that caused a miscarriage, nearly losing his life and eventually ending up with a disability. While Duan Yang was directly responsible for this, it was Shen Jiaqi who orchestrated the scheme behind the scenes.

Especially later on, when Duan Yang developed feelings for the original owner, Shen Jiaqi realized he couldn’t win him back, and his schemes no longer targeted just the original owner but also involved Duan Yang multiple times.

Given all this, after Duan Yang publicly rejected Shen Jiaqi, it wouldn’t be surprising for Shen Jiaqi to be so enraged that he would want to kill Duan Yang as well.

After Su Yunzhe made a phone call to inform the police of the situation, he called someone else to keep an eye on Shen Jiaqi’s movements.

After all, everything was still just their speculation. The police needed solid evidence to make an arrest, and if they couldn’t find any in the short term, Shen Jiaqi might try to escape. If he fled abroad, it would be much harder to bring him back.

So it was necessary to keep an eye on him.

The hospital was very close to Qing Shui Bay. After making two phone calls, Su Yunzhe arrived.

The car stopped in the underground garage, and Su Yunzhe pulled Shen Yan out of the car and upstairs.

The elevator ride was silent as Su Yunzhe kept his eyes on the floor indicator, looking anxious, which confused Shen Yan.

It wasn’t until they exited the elevator and were pulled into their home that Shen Yan finally realized what Su Yunzhe was so anxious about. He was spun around, pressed against the wall, and his mouth was sealed by Su Yunzhe’s kiss.

Only then did Shen Yan realize what Su Yunzhe had been so worried about.

But, the elevator was private, and if Su Yunzhe was really in a hurry, there was no need to go home.

Oh, wait, there were cameras in the elevator.

Shen Yan didn’t know why he was thinking about these irrelevant things at this moment, but he couldn’t help but smile. His lips were gently nipped by Su Yunzhe, who didn’t give him a chance to speak and kissed him again.

The kiss was gentle, and since Shen Yan was pregnant, Su Yunzhe had always been like this—acting as if Shen Yan was made of glass, afraid that a hard kiss would break him.

But Shen Yan could sense that Su Yunzhe was suppressing his emotions. At that moment, Su Yunzhe probably wanted to use the most passionate kiss to confirm Shen Yan’s presence and to ease the shock caused by the unexpected events of the previous day.

Shen Yan reached up to wrap his arms around Su Yunzhe’s waist, his hands subtly caressing him through his clothes.

Su Yunzhe’s breath grew heavier, and his tender kisses became more forceful, nearly sucking all the air out of Shen Yan’s lungs.

“Mm…”

Shen Yan regretted teasing him and gently pushed him away, making a protesting sound through his nose.

Su Yunzhe released his lips and buried his head in Shen Yan’s neck, rubbing gently, his voice low and hoarse. “I’m so scared… I almost lost my mind.”

Shen Yan froze for a moment, his fingers running through Su Yunzhe’s slightly disheveled hair, and he whispered, “I’m fine. I’m perfectly fine. Not even a scratch.”

“I know, but…” Su Yunzhe paused, simply holding him tighter without saying another word.

Suddenly, Shen Yan felt something wet on his neck. He froze, incredulous. “Su Yunzhe, you…”

Su Yunzhe, still holding him, chuckled softly but didn’t look up. His voice was hoarse and barely recognizable. “Guess I still have many silly sides that you’ll discover, huh?”

Who said it was silly?

Crying for someone you love, how could that be silly? It was actually very cute, wasn’t it?

In that moment, Shen Yan’s heart was completely filled with the man named Su Yunzhe. He couldn’t let go of anything, only holding onto Su Yunzhe, feeling as if he could merge with him, not wanting to be separated even for a moment.

Unfortunately, he was pregnant, and Su Yunzhe needed to rest too.

Having compressed a week’s worth of work into four days, rushing back with a time difference still unadjusted, and staying by the hospital bed all night, even a steel man couldn’t hold up.

So after kissing Shen Yan over and over again, Su Yunzhe was still gently pushed onto the bed by Shen Yan, who ordered him to close his eyes and not open them. Ten minutes later, he was fast asleep.

Shen Yan lay on his side, gazing at Su Yunzhe’s worn-out face, his heart soft yet filled with affection. His mind suddenly drifted back to something from long ago.

At that time, he vaguely felt that Su Yunzhe’s feelings for him were different. He knew he should keep his distance to prevent Su Yunzhe from falling deeper, but that night, after drinking with Qin Mofeng until late, he saw Su Yunzhe standing in the alley, smoking. When Su Yunzhe saw him, he snuffed out the cigarette and walked out of the darkness, handing him a cup of brown sugar water with a smile in his eyes, despite the dark circles under them from lack of sleep.

Reason told him to say goodbye, but his lips didn’t listen, and he ended up keeping Su Yunzhe in his home for the night.

Later, he would often joke that Su Yunzhe’s way of courting was old-fashioned, but he secretly liked it. Seeing Su Yunzhe wait for him, exhausted yet still by his side, made him feel both heartbroken and moved.

Unable to resist, he leaned in and kissed Su Yunzhe’s eyelids, then cuddled him, feeling at ease enough to fall asleep.

In the evening, Shen Yan woke up groggily, but Su Yunzhe was still fast asleep.

Shen Yan snuggled in the bed, rubbing against him and gently brushing Su Yunzhe’s eyelashes. He realized that Su Yunzhe had no intention of waking up, but his own stomach was growling.

So, Shen Yan quietly got out of bed and went downstairs to the kitchen.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much stock in the house. He poured himself a glass of milk, debating whether to cook some noodles or order takeout.

Five seconds later, he decided to order takeout.

While he could cook noodles, his skills were limited to just boiling them; as for the taste, it was another matter entirely.

So, takeout was the better option. Plus, Su Yunzhe might wake up soon and would need food too.

He grabbed his phone and ordered dinner from a nearby restaurant he had eaten at before, one that had decent food. Then, he prepared to eat some snacks while waiting. However, Su Yunzhe’s phone, which had been left on the coffee table, rang.

Without thinking, Shen Yan picked it up, only to realize it was the police calling.

“Mr. Su, we’ve gathered evidence of Shen Jiaqi’s involvement in the crime,” the officer said.

The police were very efficient. After learning that Duan Yang’s brakes had been tampered with and listening to Shen Yan’s statement earlier that afternoon, they had gathered all the surveillance footage from the Qing Shui Bay neighborhood and interviewed many residents to collect evidence.

Qing Shui Bay was a high-end community with strict entry and exit records, and it had plenty of surveillance cameras. The police quickly found footage of Shen Jiaqi acting suspiciously.

Though Shen Jiaqi almost never faced the cameras directly, several residents had seen him loitering near Duan Yang’s car for a long time. When Duan Yang lost control and rushed out of the building, drove away, and after that, Shen Jiaqi entered the building. The elevator footage didn’t show his face, but it did capture him carrying two buckets of a strange liquid, clearly gasoline.

This provided strong evidence that Duan Yang hadn’t set the fire.

The police soon began their efforts to arrest Shen Jiaqi, who clearly had plans to escape. He was eventually stopped at the airport customs and is now in police custody.

The purpose of the call was twofold: first, to inform Su Yunzhe of the situation, since Shen Yan was the victim; and second, to ask Shen Yan to come to the police station to provide a detailed statement, as they would need it for the charges of murder against Shen Jiaqi.

Shen Yan readily agreed and promised to go the next day.

After hanging up, Shen Yan couldn’t help but shake his head and sigh. Now, the Shen family would reunite in prison, though that all depended on whether Duan Yang survived. If Duan Yang died, Shen Jiaqi might not just be imprisoned but would likely face the death penalty.

However, that wasn’t Shen Yan’s concern. He wasn’t the one who had suffered so terribly as the original owner had, nor was he someone who would show excessive sympathy.

At the end of the original book, Shen Jiaqi was also supposed to be imprisoned. Yet, after shedding a few tears on his knees, the original owner softened and concealed his crimes, saying something like “knowing one’s mistakes and improving is the greatest virtue.”

Shen Yan had no patience for such ideas. For someone like Shen Jiaqi, a life sentence would be appropriate, and the death penalty wouldn’t be too much.

The next day, after Su Yunzhe had rested enough, they went to the hospital together and informed Ling Sichen of the news.

Ling Sichen didn’t know Shen Jiaqi at all; he was just caught up in the situation because of Shen Yan. When he heard that Shen Jiaqi would be imprisoned, he simply thought it was well-deserved and had no other feelings about it.

Shen Yan wasn’t interested in discussing it further. Instead, he was more puzzled by Qin Mofeng’s absence from the hospital.

Ling Sichen’s legs were both in casts, so it was clear he wouldn’t be getting out of bed anytime soon. He would have to stay in the hospital for a while. Although there was a caregiver with him, someone like Qin Mofeng would likely want to stay by his side at all costs, wouldn’t he?

Noticing Shen Yan’s wandering eyes without asking, Ling Sichen spoke up first. “I told him not to stay here and make a scene. It would affect the mood of the patients, and recovery would be slower.”

Um… Was it that harsh?

With that excuse, even if Qin Mofeng wanted to stubbornly stay, he wouldn’t be able to.

Although from what happened yesterday, Ling Sichen clearly seemed to be even more upset with Qin Mofeng, it was still unexpected that he would be so straightforward about kicking him out.

But then again, if it had been Shen Yan in that situation—escaping with his life hanging by a thread, and someone doubting he was the kidnapper—he definitely wouldn’t have been kind.

It was just that Qin Mofeng was too blunt. Wouldn’t it have been better to keep that kind of thing to himself?

After Ling Sichen recovered and woke up in the hospital, seeing Qin Mofeng anxiously waiting by his bedside, the tension between them would likely ease up a bit.

What a great opportunity, wasted by Qin Mofeng himself. It couldn’t be helped.

In the end, this was really something between Ling Sichen and Qin Mofeng. Others couldn’t say much.

However, Su Yunzhe, showing rare humanity, called Qin Mofeng after they left the hospital.

The events of the day before must have been just as hard for Qin Mofeng as they were for Su Yunzhe. He had experienced the situation where someone he cared about almost died. Like Su Yunzhe, he must have wanted to hold onto the person and confirm they were truly safe and sound.

But after the ambulance took Ling Sichen away when he was unconscious, Qin Mofeng never had a chance to be near him again.

Now, he was being outright kicked out of the hospital by Ling Sichen, and he was probably crying somewhere alone.

Su Yunzhe had prepared himself for hearing that Qin Mofeng was drunk or in some disarray, but to his surprise, when Qin Mofeng answered the phone, his voice was light and his tone completely normal. He didn’t sound down at all.

“What’s up? You came to see me make a fool of myself, didn’t you? Let me tell you, you’re underestimating me. I’m not the kind of person who collapses after a little setback!” Qin Mofeng’s tone was even a little smug.

Shen Yan glanced at Su Yunzhe in surprise. Could it be that Qin Mofeng had really been so affected by the situation that his brain was a little off?

Su Yunzhe shook his head and laughed into the phone. “Wow, you managed to figure things out by yourself, huh? Good for you!”

Qin Mofeng responded, “Of course, I figured it out. Do you know, when I saw the house burning and thought he was dead, the only thing in my head was to jump down and die with him. But now, I’ve thought it through. I can’t live without him, so I’m going to get him back. Alright, enough of this, I don’t want to waste time talking to a married man like you. I’m heading to Duan’s company now. Once I become the CEO of Duan’s, I’ll be right next to him and work on making him fall in love with me again!”

“Alright, good luck!” Su Yunzhe didn’t care much about other people’s business, especially matters of the heart. To him, relationships were personal matters and not something outsiders should get involved with.

But since Qin Mofeng was his good friend, he would sometimes interfere.

Now, seeing that Qin Mofeng was fine, Su Yunzhe didn’t need to worry anymore.

After hanging up, the two didn’t head straight home. The hospital was close to Qing Shui Bay, so they held hands and walked along the coastal road.

It was late spring, almost early summer, and the sea breeze felt refreshing, not too hot.

In the distance, children with bare feet were flying kites on the sandy beach, laughing and playing.

As Shen Yan watched them, his mood lightened, and he pulled Su Yunzhe down onto the beach. He took off his shoes and walked barefoot in the sand, deliberately stepping into the seawater.

Su Yunzhe tried to stop him several times without success, so he simply lifted Shen Yan onto his back, refusing to let his feet touch the ground. He even slapped Shen Yan’s butt and said angrily, “If you keep messing around like this, I’ll toss you into the sea to feed the fish!”

Although it was already early summer, the sea water wasn’t cold, Shen Yan still had to be careful during his pregnancy. If he got sick, he couldn’t even take medicine—how miserable would that be?

Shen Yan rested his head on Su Yunzhe’s shoulder and asked with a laugh, “Would you really throw me in?”

“I wouldn’t,” Su Yunzhe replied, his voice carrying a hint of unintentional affection. “I wouldn’t feed you to the fish, and I wouldn’t want you to get sick either. So, be good and listen to me, alright?”

Shen Yan buried his face in Su Yunzhe’s back, grinning foolishly for a while, before leaning close to Su Yunzhe’s ear and whispering, “Honey, you’re the best!”
