Chapter 26

This entry is part 26 of 31 in the series Pheromones Say We Can't Be Together

The “injured patient” was far too energetic, throwing the carefully planned drill completely into chaos. The orderly emergency drill at No. 1 High School was now filled with discussion, laughter, meowing, and the screams of a certain someone.

The visiting teachers: “……”

Even Director Wu could no longer bring himself to praise them. The smile on his face was becoming difficult to maintain. “……Anyway, the two of them are quite special.”

“It’s freaking hot. You’re the one with no conscience.” Xiao Yan picked up the paper cup from the table and tossed it into the trash can on the floor, only then remembering to turn off his microphone.

The two “special” students turned off their microphones and hurriedly cleaned up the mess on the podium. Behind them, the projection screen was still on, frozen on the previous PPT slide Luo Zhiyu had displayed. Black words on a white background were written clearly:

“When something happens, always remain calm.”

“What are they talking about?” Zhang Shu stood on tiptoe to look. “What did Brother Yan do to Luo Zhiyu?”

“No idea.” Fan Yue pulled Zhang Shu back. “Hurry, hurry, hurry. Go play an injured patient and take over for Tang Yuan.”

Just as Zhang Shu lay down on the stretcher in Tang Yuan’s place, Tang Yuan wailed as he rushed past the two of them, while a fat orange cat stepped directly over Zhang Shu.

Fan Yue: “……”

“Why are there so many big orange cats at school lately? If I’d known, I would’ve gone to play the injured patient just now. It would’ve been easier lying there.” A small patch on the back of Luo Zhiyu’s hand had turned red from the tea. “It actually hurts. Where did you get burned? Is it serious?”

When the paper cup had been knocked over, everyone got an equal share. Half of the tea had splashed onto the back of Luo Zhiyu’s hand, while the other half had splashed onto Xiao Yan’s pants.

“I’m fine……” Xiao Yan shook his head, tapped the space bar on the computer, and changed to another PPT slide.

“Come here, let me take a look?” Luo Zhiyu had only done two things today: made tea and changed the PPT slides. Now that he had knocked over the cup, he felt a little guilty. Whether it was merely fake concern or genuine concern, he decided to show Xiao Yan some care.

Xiao Yan took a step backward at his words. His complicated gaze lingered on Luo Zhiyu’s face for several seconds before he shook his head as though disgusted.

Luo Zhiyu: “?”

Why was he being so fussy?

“Luo Zhiyu.” Xiao Yan wiped the chair clean and sat back down. “You’re just a little pervert.”

“How am I……” Luo Zhiyu was about to slam his hand on the table and argue, but for some reason, he suddenly remembered the search results he had looked up yesterday. He immediately fell silent.

The speed at which he shut his mouth was so astonishing that even Xiao Yan found it surprising.

The two people with absolutely no experience in controlling a crowd continued working together. Xiao Yan turned his microphone back on while Luo Zhiyu continued changing the slides. After finishing the last few safety-information slides that nobody was listening to anymore, they happened to hear the school bell signaling the end of the extended break.

The noisy sports field gradually quieted down. Students from each class formed orderly lines and headed toward their classrooms.

“What were you two doing just now?” Fan Yue jogged a few steps to catch up with them.

“We spilled boiling water.” Luo Zhiyu was still rubbing the back of his hand. “What did you think we were doing?”

“Sure enough.” Fan Yue looked relieved. “I knew you two had to be completely innocent.”

Luo Zhiyu: “……Oh.”

Xiao Yan: “……”

Because the earthquake and disaster-prevention safety drill had been full of mishaps and failed to achieve its intended educational purpose, the school decided to hold another morning assembly drill on a later date. The blackboard display bearing Luo Zhiyu and Xiao Yan’s names would also remain at the main entrance of No. 1 High School for a while.

No. 1 High School City Campus Forum—

[This was the most entertaining morning assembly I’ve had since entering No. 1 High School hahaha.]

1F: Old Wu’s face went green hahaha. I’m almost feeling sorry for him. Working in education and running into these two really is unfortunate. Dog-head.jpg

2F: It’s not that bad, big bro, you’re exaggerating. When the citywide joint exam comes around, you’ll realize these two are pretty good at bringing glory to the school. I feel sorry for Tang Yuan instead. Being a fierce A really isn’t easy. He ran around the sports field three whole laps before finally shaking off that big orange cat.

3F: Luo Zhiyu and Xiao Yan are as hilarious as ever. Every time I’m about to believe the two of them are innocent, they manage to do something else. Dog-head.jpg

4F: They spilled boiling water. Everyone disperse. Clean out all that yellow garbage in your heads. Their pheromone compatibility is 0%. What are you even thinking?

5F: Following up with the fourth floor: There’s no way those two are happening. Just laugh about it and don’t take it seriously.

6F: Fine, those two aren’t happening. Then why have Xiao Yan and Luo Zhiyu been appearing together so frequently lately? Suspicious motives? Has Brother Yan been cleared of suspicion today?

6F (Gunpowder Everywhere): Director Wu, Director Xu, someone is using their phone in class to browse the forum. I suggest a thorough investigation.

“This period’s PE teacher has something to attend to, so we’re switching to math.” Teacher Zhang stepped up to the podium, and the chatter in the classroom gradually quieted.

“The PE teacher has something to do every day.” Jing Ximing muttered under his breath.

“Sigh.” Luo Zhiyu rested his head on his arm. “I want to go outside and play badminton.”

“Luo Zhiyu.” The math teacher, Teacher Zhang, called his name. “Yes, you—the one who impersonated Xiao Yan from the second-year class before.”

The entire class burst into laughter.

“Come up here and solve this problem.” Teacher Zhang tapped the blackboard with his triangular ruler. “Don’t just write the answer. Show the complete working.”

Luo Zhiyu obediently stood up and walked to the podium to solve the problem. Teacher Zhang walked down from the podium and went around the classroom checking how everyone was doing.

The problem wasn’t difficult for Luo Zhiyu. It was just that writing out the entire process would take some time. When Luo Zhiyu had filled up about half the blackboard, he caught sight of a familiar figure from the corner of his eye.

Xiao Yan had his blue-and-white school uniform hanging open, a badminton racket in his hand. Together with Fan Yue, he passed by the door of Senior One Class Three. Their class had PE that period, and the two of them were heading to the sports field, each carrying an ice cream.

As Xiao Yan passed Senior One Class Three, he naturally glanced toward that familiar seat, only to unexpectedly find that Luo Zhiyu wasn’t there.

Luo Zhiyu was at the podium solving the problem.

The moment Luo Zhiyu saw Xiao Yan, he was already distracted. The chalk in his hand veered off course and produced a line of chicken-scratch writing.

“Come out and play.” Xiao Yan deliberately slowed his steps, pointing toward the sports field outside the balcony. “Zhizhi, wanna play?”

“Go away, go away, go away.” Luo Zhiyu mouthed back. “I’m doing a problem.”

“Luo Zhiyu.” Teacher Zhang shouted. “You’re not doing your problem properly. Who are you telling to go away?”

“Him……” Luo Zhiyu pointed toward the window.

The two people who had been standing outside immediately used the windowsill as cover and crouched down at lightning speed.

Teacher Zhang: “?”

Luo Zhiyu: “……”

“It’s nothing, Teacher.” Luo Zhiyu gritted his teeth and pressed a line of equations onto the blackboard. “I’m looking for inspiration to solve the problem.”

Under the admiring gazes of the entire class, Luo Zhiyu returned to his seat. He stacked the two piles of books on his desk even higher, blocking Teacher Zhang’s line of sight, then opened WeChat.

[Outstanding Second-Year Student Representative]: Hahahahaha.

[Outstanding Second-Year Student Representative]: Serves you right hahaha.

[Not Zhizhi]: Just you wait.

“Not Zhizhi” changed the contact nickname to [Stinky Orange].

[Stinky Orange]: I’m waiting.

That evening during self-study, Senior Two Class Three had a surprise in-class test.

“Do it honestly. There’s nothing much to copy on a physiology test anyway. The score won’t count toward evaluations for outstanding students. If you fail, you can just retake it.” Teacher Xu handed out the test papers and glanced at the time. “I have something to take care of at home, so I have to leave first. There won’t be anyone supervising. Everyone, behave yourselves. If anyone whispers to someone else, Xiao Yan, help me write down their names. After the test, Lu Minggui, please collect the papers for me.”

“Pass the papers around.” Teacher Xu handed the stack to Fan Yue. “There are three versions. Don’t hand out the wrong ones.”

[No. 1 High School City Campus Physiology & Health Class Final Test — Alpha Version]

Section One: Multiple Choice

Question 1 (General Knowledge): It is already late in the evening. An unmarked omega invites you to go out and play. He has no clear purpose in mind and has invited only you. His words are evasive and even carry a somewhat flirtatious meaning. What should you do in this situation?

A. Happily go out with him

B. Firmly and righteously refuse him

C. Reluctantly agree to go

“Easy. You don’t even need to think.” Fan Yue had already started answering the questions. “Hurry up and finish so we can do our homework.”

It really was easy. A free point. Only an idiot would fail to choose B.

Xiao Yan pulled the cap off his fountain pen. Just as the nib was about to touch the paper, there came a soft knock at the window beside him—

All of Senior Two was taking the test, and the corridor was completely silent.

Luo Zhiyu was hiding beside the wall. He tiptoed over, making barely any sound.

“Come out and play, gege.”
