Chapter 46

This entry is part 46 of 66 in the series Rebirth in the Apocalypse: A New Life

The others had long since been dumbfounded. Normally, as teammates of Jialun Xu, they should have stepped forward to help. But Jialun Xu’s earlier words had made it clear that this was a matter of personal emotional entanglement. It seemed inappropriate for them to interfere.

But if they did not step in, the kid wielding the katana was striking to kill with every blow, showing no mercy whatsoever. What would they do if something happened to their leader?

The two people in Jialun Xu’s team exchanged glances, completely at a loss as to what they should do.

Wen Tong wanted to help, but unfortunately, he was a non-combat-type ability user. He could only stand there helplessly, unable to do anything.

At this moment, Quan Xiaoyu had received a comprehensive boost to both speed and strength. This energy was given to him by the space, so its method of enhancement was different from that of ordinary abilities. But judging from the current situation, he was already equivalent to a Level Three speed-type ability user combined with a Level Two strength-type ability user.

For a moment, he beat Jialun Xu until he could only barely defend himself, completely incapable of fighting back.

The other two ability users who had come with Jialun Xu saw that the situation was bad. They no longer cared whether this was some kind of emotional entanglement. If they did not intervene now, Jialun Xu would lose his life.

Thus, one of them used a plant-type ability, extending vines that wrapped around Quan Xiaoyu’s feet. The other summoned an ice sword and thrust it straight toward Quan Xiaoyu’s vital point.

Quan Xiaoyu swung his blade and cut through the vines, dodging the ice blade. A Level One plant-type and ice-type ability user were not worthy of his attention at all.

However, with the two of them joining in, the pressure on Jialun Xu was greatly reduced, instantly giving him a chance to catch his breath. Three against one, and the battle reached a slight stalemate.

At this moment, Chu Tian was still sitting motionless on the ground, both eyes tightly shut and his brows furrowed.

Now, even a blind person could tell that something was wrong with Chu Tian.

No wonder. No wonder that kid holding the katana would not let anyone approach him, and would draw his blade at the slightest disagreement!

The small leader of the mercenaries had been paying attention to this side for quite some time. At first, he had watched the show with considerable interest. After all, they were trapped here anyway. If they really could not get out and ended up dying here, he could just consider all of this entertainment before death.

But afterward, he was shocked by Quan Xiaoyu’s skills.

Originally, he had only thought that Quan Xiaoyu was a speed-type ability user with some martial arts skills. And judging from his actions when he rescued people, he should also be someone who was cold on the outside but warm-hearted on the inside. He did not seem to like talking and had always followed behind Chu Tian. His presence was not particularly strong, so everyone had more or less overlooked him before.

But now, it was clear that this guy’s speed and strength had already surpassed the speed-type ability user in his own team. Every move was ruthless and left no room for mercy, and almost every strike was aimed at taking a life.

In almost an instant, his previous impression of this person was completely overturned.

Wen Tong was anxiously watching the tense situation. Suddenly, he noticed Chu Tian by the wall, his eyes tightly closed, and an evil thought instantly arose in his mind.

The dagger he carried in his arms for self-defense had already been drawn. Gripping the dagger tightly, Wen Tong charged toward Chu Tian.

Quan Xiaoyu sensed that something was wrong. When he swiftly turned around, the dagger in Wen Tong’s hand was already less than half a meter from Chu Tian’s throat.

There was no time to rush over!

As for using his fire-type ability, he did not dare. He was afraid of accidentally injuring Chu Tian!

Quan Xiaoyu’s eyes immediately widened with fury.

“Wen Tong! How dare you!”

In the blink of an eye, before Wen Tong could get close, a bolt of lightning descended, striking precisely the right hand with which Wen Tong was gripping the dagger.

The dagger fell to the ground with a “clang,” black smoke rising from it. Wen Tong rolled onto the ground, clutching his right hand and screaming in agony.

Quan Xiaoyu abandoned the three people he was fighting and ran alone back to Chu Tian’s side. The blade of his katana descended toward Wen Tong’s head.

“Don’t—!”

All three of Jialun Xu’s companions cried out in shock.

The entire team’s supplies were stored in Wen Tong’s space. If he died, they would have nothing left!

Quan Xiaoyu was completely unaffected, and the speed of his descending blade did not hesitate in the slightest.

The three of them had already closed their eyes in despair. It was too late to rescue him. The tragedy could no longer be avoided.

Why? Why had Wen Tong gone to provoke that person? If he had simply done nothing, he would not have angered that kid. His death might be easy enough, but what would happen to that batch of supplies? What would happen to the entire team?

Once again, at the critical moment, it was still that same bolt of lightning.

It struck Quan Xiaoyu’s katana, causing the blade to veer off at the last instant.

But Quan Xiaoyu did not retreat at all. He swung his right hand, which had been numbed somewhat by the lightning, once again, and brought the blade down.

Another bolt of lightning struck.

The blade was deflected once again.

The two missed attacks finally bought Jialun Xu’s three companions precious time. They hurried forward and pulled the thoroughly frightened Wen Tong back into their own group.

At this point, they had no intention of fighting anymore. They simply dragged him back and retreated to the farthest possible distance from Quan Xiaoyu, remaining fully on guard.

They finally understood.

That cold-faced young man who seemed to have almost no presence was actually a lunatic.

Quan Xiaoyu was about to pursue them, but someone suddenly stepped in front of him.

It was the small leader of the mercenaries.

Seeing that things on this side had become completely unreasonable, he had finally decided to intervene.

Wen Tong’s actions had indeed been contemptible, which was why he had deliberately injured Wen Tong’s hand as punishment. But now that everyone was trapped here, this was precisely the time when they needed to unite and face the outside threat together. Internal fighting was probably not a good idea.

That was why he had stepped forward to stop Quan Xiaoyu from pursuing him.

Because of his obstruction, Quan Xiaoyu’s expression became extremely unfriendly. He stared straight at him, clearly intending to force him to move aside.

“Little brother, calm down. Although I don’t know what happened to your teammate, he doesn’t look well right now. You’d better go back to his side first.”

He looked at Quan Xiaoyu and spoke sincerely.

Quan Xiaoyu hesitated for a moment when he heard this. He turned around and glanced at Chu Tian.

Chu Tian still had his eyes tightly closed, but the expression of pain was gone.

Quan Xiaoyu breathed a slight sigh of relief. The look in his eyes toward the mercenary leader also softened considerably.

The mercenary leader secretly breathed a sigh of relief as well. He had been afraid this guy was simply a lunatic who would refuse to listen to reason. Now it seemed that was not the case.

If he was willing to listen to reason, then things would be easier.

“Little brother, look. Everyone is trapped here together right now, and we don’t even know whether we’ll still be alive tomorrow. Why don’t you put this matter aside for now? Once we get out of here, you can pursue the matter as you see fit and settle whatever debts need settling. If none of us make it out alive, then even if you kill him now, what meaning would it have, right?”

It was rare for the mercenary leader to speak so earnestly in an attempt to persuade someone.

Usually, this sort of thing was handled by their boss. Now that he had taken over, he finally realized that persuading people was nowhere near as satisfying as fighting!

Although he admired Quan Xiaoyu’s fighting spirit quite a lot, the timing was simply wrong. As for this feeling of mutual appreciation, they would have to wait until after they escaped the danger.

Quan Xiaoyu looked at him, then turned back and glanced at Chu Tian.

Finally, he lowered the katana in his hand.

From a distance, he looked toward Wen Tong, his eyes filled entirely with killing intent.

Then he returned to Chu Tian’s side and sat down. He still did not say a word, merely taking Chu Tian’s hand tightly in his own once again.

The mercenary leader finally felt relieved and returned to his own people.

Wen Tong was still clutching his right hand and wailing in pain. Jialun Xu called out for Lu Zhongxia to go over and help him.

Lu Zhongxia acted as though he had heard nothing at all. He remained sitting in his original spot without moving, his lips curled into a cold sneer.

Things on that side were in complete chaos, while things on Quan Xiaoyu’s side were quiet.

After witnessing his fighting ability, everyone consciously kept their distance from him.

The zombies outside did not make much of a commotion either. They still surrounded them, howling in place, but showed no signs of crossing the line.

Time passed second by second.

Another fifteen minutes or so passed when Chu Tian’s hand moved.

Quan Xiaoyu immediately looked at him.

With that glance, he saw Chu Tian open his eyes.

His pair of eyes were as brilliant as stars, yet carried a profound, bottomless quality. They locked firmly onto Quan Xiaoyu’s face.

Staring into those eyes, Quan Xiaoyu was dazed for a long time.

Only when Chu Tian looked at him, revealed his white teeth, and laughed aloud did he ask:

“Do they look good?”

With that smile, Quan Xiaoyu immediately lowered his head awkwardly, his face burning again.

On one hand, he cursed himself for being so useless. So what if he had looked? Why was he embarrassed?

On the other hand, he could not help mocking Chu Tian for being so vain.

Good-looking? What was so good-looking about him?

Why did a man need to look good?!

But Chu Tian reached out and hooked his hand around his head. He leaned his own head forward until their foreheads touched lightly.

“If you think they’re good-looking, I’ll only let you look at them from now on.”

Quan Xiaoyu felt that now it was not only his face that was burning.

Even his ears were on fire.

Several people in the distance had been secretly paying close attention to what was happening over here.

The moment Chu Tian woke up, someone immediately looked over.

After all, Chu Tian’s sudden unconsciousness had been somewhat abnormal, and they were also worried that he might have mutated.

Fortunately, Chu Tian had woken up. He looked perfectly fine, and had even taken the opportunity to tease that ferocious beautiful young man.

That kid was so vicious toward other people. Who would have thought that once he fell into Chu Tian’s hands, he would immediately turn into such a well-behaved good boy?

Tsk, tsk, tsk!

The people on the mercenary side could not help but voice similar sighs inwardly at the same time.

At the same time, everyone more or less understood the relationship between these two.

No one had any particularly unusual thoughts about it.

The apocalypse had already arrived. What could possibly be considered impossible anymore?

In the apocalypse, women appeared even weaker, while men had more and more opportunities and time to fight side by side.

After spending so much time together, some people’s feelings would cross the boundary of friendship.

There was nothing particularly strange about it.

Author’s Note:

I had something to do today and didn’t have time to correct the typos. Please bear with me. I’m guessing there are quite a few typos.

Also, because I have things going on these past two days, there may be no update tomorrow. Just giving everyone an early warning.
