Chapter 3

On the first day of the second semester of their sophomore year, the teacher was assigning new seats.

“Xiao Yi, you can sit next to Fu Yu,” the teacher said.

In an instant, Fu Yu felt sympathetic glances from all around the classroom.

Xiao Yi, the notorious troublemaker known throughout the school, was constantly getting into fights and causing trouble both inside and outside the school. Unfortunately, due to his wealthy background and generous donations to the school, the teachers turned a blind eye to his actions.

Despite his poor grades, he had somehow made it into the honors class this semester. It was clear to everyone how he got there, and it was deeply unfair to the hardworking students who had strived to join the honors class. Most of the students still looked down on him, even though he was tall, handsome, and wealthy. They couldn’t understand why someone from his background would choose to attend this strict private high school instead of the prestigious international schools that catered to the wealthy elite.

“Bang!”

Xiao Yi casually threw his backpack on the desk and sat down, burying his head to sleep, treating Fu Yu as if he didn’t exist. Nobody dared to come near this corner of the classroom, and instead, they busied themselves with organizing their own desks.

Fu Yu glanced at his new desk mate who was currently sleeping with his head down. He spoke in a neutral tone, “Can you even sleep in this noise?”

He didn’t intend to establish a good relationship with Xiao Yi, nor did he expect Xiao Yi to pay him any attention.

“What did you say?” Xiao Yi furrowed his noble brows slightly, showing signs of irritation at being disturbed.

“I said, can you even sleep in this noise?” Fu Yu stared at him with an expressionless face. The classroom was filled with the sound of desks being moved and students chatting, making it quite noisy.

“Who the hell can sleep in this racket?” Xiao Yi retorted. He sat up abruptly, his cold gaze scrutinizing Fu Yu. Most people would have been intimidated by such a look.

“I figured you couldn’t sleep, so why force it?” Fu Yu said calmly. “And it does concern me. If you fall asleep and start snoring, it’ll disrupt my ability to focus in class.”

Fu Yu’s intention was clear: “I’m not afraid of you, but don’t disrupt me.”

Fu Yu had expected Xiao Yi to react angrily or even resort to violence, but to his surprise, Xiao Yi simply glared at him for a moment before returning to his sleeping position without a word, sleeping silently for the entire morning, making no noise whatsoever.

He doesn’t seem as impulsive and arrogant as the rumors say, Fu Yu thought.

At lunchtime, everyone went to the cafeteria to eat. Fu Yu finished the last problem and glanced at the still-buried head of Xiao Yi. After a moment of contemplation and considering Xiao Yi’s decent behavior in the morning, he reached out and pushed Xiao Yi’s arm lightly. “Wake up, it’s lunchtime.”

Xiao Yi raised his head quickly. His messy hair was pressed against his forehead, and his eyes didn’t look as dazed as one would expect from someone who had been asleep.

Fu Yu looked around the classroom, and it was clear that they were the only two left. He asked, his tone somewhat subtle, “Are you waiting for me to have lunch together?”

“No, I’m working on these problems,” Fu Yu replied straightforwardly. “But we can go together if you want.”

Xiao Yi’s expression darkened. “I don’t want to go to the cafeteria.”

“Oh.” Fu Yu turned and walked toward the classroom door.

“…You’re not really sincere, are you?” Xiao Yi muttered.

Fu Yu stopped and turned back, seeing Xiao Yi’s face as dark as coal.

“I genuinely asked you. If you don’t want to go, I can’t force you,” Fu Yu said calmly. “So, I’ll ask you again, do you want to go to the cafeteria?”

“I don’t!” Xiao Yi replied curtly.

Fu Yu turned and walked out of the classroom without saying another word.

In the afternoon, Xiao Yi continued to sleep, but he seemed restless, tossing and turning. It was clear he hadn’t been sleeping soundly. He also occasionally groaned softly, clutching his stomach.

After the second class of the afternoon, Fu Yu glanced at Xiao Yi, sighed, and leaned closer to lightly push Xiao Yi’s arm.

Xiao Yi, looking irritated, raised his head and saw Fu Yu’s face up close, causing him to forget the insults he was about to hurl.

Fu Yu pushed a sandwich he had bought during lunch into Xiao Yi’s desk and said softly, “Eat something. Your stomach is making a lot of noise.”

Xiao Yi’s expression remained somewhat dazed as he stared at Fu Yu for a while. Eventually, he muttered, “Whatever.”

Fu Yu seemed to have suddenly figured out how to deal with his new desk mate.
