Chapter 12

This entry is part 12 of 122 in the series When a Man Becomes the Villain

Fan Qing’s video was quickly sent to Jian Feishuo’s phone.

Jian Feishuo hesitated for two seconds before coldly opening it.

Watching, he exhaled slightly.

Just some routine training. Ah-Yang had private coaches at home; nothing extraordinary.

But this Fan Qing seemed surprisingly professional, and Ah-Yang had clearly improved.

That was unexpected.

As he watched, he even found himself nitpicking.

“Still too skinny, so working out this long leaves him scrawny.”

“Form’s alright, but strength’s lacking.”

“Huh? This move barely passes, but still too skinny.”

Then suddenly the screen went dark.

Over?

Just as Jian Feishuo was about to close it, a voice came from the video.

“Do you really believe gossip? If he had a backer, would he be stuck with someone like Fan Qing? Can’t even get a simple boxed meal right—previous cold meals, he ate obediently like a dog! What’s there to fear? If he had a backer, then I must be the illegitimate son of the Jian family outside!”

Bang—!

A loud noise echoed from the office.

The assistant at the door froze, quickly lowered his hand, and turned to leave.

Indeed, the earlier meeting wasn’t wrong—Mr. Jian was in a notably bad mood today.

The true warrior facing Jian Feishuo was Fan Qing.

When Jian Feishuo started interrogating him, Fan Qing simply countered with a question:

“Mr. Jian, surely you have some awareness of this situation?”

Jian Feishuo’s face darkened.

“What do you mean?”

Fan Qing let out a faint chuckle, then casually pushed Jian Feiyang aside, who had been sneaking a peek next to him.

“Your question is interesting, Mr. Jian. Isn’t it also your decision to block Jian Feiyang’s variety show contract?”

Jian Feishuo was momentarily stunned.

He furrowed his brows. “Don’t mix these things up. Ah-Yang’s position… is set.”

“Are you implying that the young master of the Jian family, who left home, is in some way incompatible with the current head of the family?”

Fan Qing cut him off.

Jian Feiyang turned, eyes wide with admiration.

A warrior!

He silently gave a thumbs-up. Fan Qing actually dared to speak to his brother like this!

Jian Feishuo, for the first time, felt someone audaciously twisting words against him and, after a brief daze, finally shot back:

“Even so, he’s still the young master of the Jian family.”

Fan Qing’s tone dripped with sarcasm.

“Indeed, a young master with no real authority, a young master who can be manipulated even by a lowly staff member.”

Jian Feiyang quietly withdrew his thumbs-up.

Ridiculous—A-Qing, you’re basically hitting your own teammate!

Fan Qing noticed the movement from the corner of his eye and ruffled Jian Feiyang’s hair.

“Moreover, has Mr. Jian considered this possibility?”

His voice dropped, deliberate and icy, like a merciless demon from the depths.

“Even if you succeed and Jian Feiyang returns to the company under your direction, what will people say about his past in the entertainment world?”

Fan Qing mimicked the tone of those low-level staff, pushing Jian Feishuo’s blood pressure to the max over the phone:

“Jian Feiyang? Oh, the one who had no self-awareness, went into acting, failed miserably, switched to variety shows and couldn’t even secure a spot, only to slink home relying on his family? Heard of him. Looks like a total loser. Even the staff looked down on him, couldn’t even get a warm meal.”

Hiss—!

Is this what a true warrior looks like?

Jian Feiyang was stunned. This—this was…

He couldn’t describe it, but he was deeply impressed.

He knew his brother would be equally shaken!

Jian Feishuo’s phone screen cracked in his anger.

“Nonsense! Absolute nonsense! If Ah-Yang returns to the company, who would dare speak like this?”

“Perhaps not to his face, but behind the scenes, who can stop them?”

Fan Qing’s voice returned to its calm, icy clarity.

“And Mr. Jian, haven’t you considered that Ah-Yang is your younger brother? He has dreams, he’s worked so hard—do you really want to block him from pursuing them? Have you thought he might resent you?”

“I’m doing this for his own good!”

Jian Feishuo blurted out.

“Then, Mr. Jian, what have you actually done that’s made him better off?”

Fan Qing landed the final, precise blow.

Silence stretched across the line.

Jian Feishuo wanted to say he had arranged the best agent for Ah-Yang, but he remembered that even this agent spoke of Ah-Yang without respect, just like Fan Qing said.

If even the people he arranged treated Ah-Yang like this, what about the others…

It was settled.

Fan Qing slightly lowered the phone, exhaling softly.

He glanced at Jian Feiyang. Sure enough—some people really are lucky in their simplicity.

Though his approach was unconventional, Jian Feishuo clearly cared about his younger brother.

Patiently, Fan Qing waited. Eventually, Jian Feishuo’s weary voice came through:

“…What exactly do you want to say?”

“Just that Mr. Jian shouldn’t block this contract.”

Fan Qing was concise.

“That’s it?”

Jian Feishuo’s emotions were conflicted.

“…All this effort, just for such a small matter?”

“You joke, Mr. Jian. You might think it’s small, but to Jian Feiyang, it’s his dream.”

Fan Qing noticed Jian Feiyang’s deeply moved expression. He stiffened, instinctively stepping back.

Jian Feiyang had already lunged forward first, squatting right in front of him.

Seeing the young man kneeling there, eyes sparkling, gave him a headache—but also a small sense of relief.

…Fine, squat if you want.

Jian Feishuo gradually calmed down.

He didn’t want to agree—but he had to admit, what Fan Qing said made sense.

Even if he ensured no one would look down on Ah-Yang after he returned, he couldn’t stop some from speaking nastily behind his back.

After considering everything, he had no choice but to consent.

“…I’ll notify the agent.”

It was done.

Fan Qing hung up. The small figure at his feet immediately stood excitedly.

“I heard it! My brother agreed, right? Can we go sign the contract now? Can I go film the variety show?”

Fan Qing pressed his head down again, not replying.

Only a faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

“Let’s go. Take a taxi to the studio.”

“You guys are quicker to get me the contract than I expected.”

Ma Gong shook his head in amazement.

Indeed, youth is to be reckoned with.

Fan Qing allowed himself a faint smile.

“Then we also have to thank Director Ma for agreeing to my request; otherwise, no matter how much effort we put in, it would have been useless.”

This time, it was Jian Feishuo who gave them the green light. Otherwise, Jian Feiyang’s contract would have needed company approval, and as long as the company and the agent held their ground, he would have had no recourse.

Ma Gong let out a knowing chuckle, looking at him meaningfully.

“Xiao Fan, I think you know who I was giving face to. There might be chances for cooperation in the future.”

Whoa!

Was the director actually impressed by A-Qing?

Jian Feiyang, beside him, was practically vibrating with excitement, winking at Fan Qing.

Though he didn’t know what kind of cooperation it might be, he hoped A-Qing would quickly accept. Maybe this meant an opportunity to appear on a variety show? Far better than just being an assistant!

Fan Qing ignored Jian Feiyang’s frantic winks and calmly looked at the director, his tone steady.

“Director Ma, you’re flattering me. If there’s any cooperation, it’s naturally between Jian Feiyang and you.”

Jian Feiyang’s face twisted in a mix of frustration and admiration.

Ma Gong was momentarily taken aback, then laughed heartily.

“You’re right,” he admitted, nodding thoughtfully.

It seemed this young man’s ambitions weren’t what he initially assumed—perhaps he intended to work behind the scenes? With such skills, going behind the camera could indeed be a smart move.

After confirming the filming date for the variety show, Fan Qing escorted the oddly grinning Jian Feiyang out of the studio.

Even on the ride back, Jian Feiyang couldn’t quite believe it.

“A-Qing… we really signed the contract?”

Fan Qing handed the contract to him.

“You can check it yourself.”

The contract was already signed. Why the hesitation? He wasn’t truly doubting it.

Jian Feiyang hummed, still holding the contract like a treasured possession.

This was the second step toward his dream—and he had achieved it by overcoming his brother. It was a moment worth cherishing!

And since A-Qing had gone to such lengths to secure this opportunity, he had to give his best performance.

Silly boy.

Fan Qing observed Jian Feiyang’s joyful expression while his fingers typed rapidly.

A message was quickly sent to Jian Feishuo’s phone:

Fan Qing: “I wonder if Mr. Jian would be interested in a small trade.”

The reply came swiftly.

Jian Feishuo: “Does Ah-Yang know? You’re after money, aren’t you?”

Fan Qing: “You misunderstand, Mr. Jian. This is a trade concerning information I’ve collected that involves both Jian Feiyang and yourself. You can decide whether to proceed. It’s an open deal, no coercion.”

Jian Feishuo: “Go ahead. And what exactly do you want?”

Fan Qing glanced at the still ecstatic Jian Feiyang. He couldn’t help but marvel once more: sometimes fools really do have fortune.

Fan Qing: “My terms are simple. I want Mr. Jian to do me a small favor—I want to be Jian Feiyang’s agent.”

Jian Feishuo: “You? Are you qualified?”

Fan Qing: “Mr. Jian, hear my information first before making any judgment.”

Jian Feishuo: “Nie Luo, Jing Yuan, and Jian Feiyang all share the same agent; I suppose you know that. Interestingly, the day I was reassigned to assist Nie Luo, I discovered he and the agent didn’t get along; Jing Yuan also auditioned for Nie Luo’s role, and I caught him meddling. I found that the staff member giving Jian Feiyang trouble had connections with Jing Yuan’s assistant. Even more interestingly, Jing Yuan recently did promotional work for your company. So, Mr. Jian, do you find my intel sufficient to proceed with this deal?”

Jian Feishuo read the words and felt as if he’d plunged into an icy abyss.

But the next second, he regained terrifying composure.

Everything had to be verified before any decision.

He glanced again at the message, recalling Ah-Yang’s obedient training in the video.

…Fan Qing, you better not let Ah-Yang down.

Jian Feishuo: “Before the show airs, Ah-Yang—”

Fan Qing: “Mr. Jian is wise. Here’s to smooth cooperation.”
