Chapter 58
Su Yunzhe turned around as soon as he heard Shen Yan’s voice, immediately snuffing out the cigarette and turning to pull him inside.
Shen Yan knew he was trying to prevent him from smelling the smoke. Su Yunzhe never smoked around him, especially now that he was pregnant.
However, Shen Yan was too anxious to explain and didn’t have time to worry about this. He grabbed Su Yunzhe’s hand. “Hey, you don’t really believe what’s online, do you? Those diaries weren’t written by me, I swear!”
Without a word, Su Yunzhe swept him off his feet and carried him into the living room, laughing as he gently ruffled Shen Yan’s hair. “I believe you! Not only do I believe the diaries aren’t yours, but I also believe you’ve never had feelings for Duan Yang.”
“Right, I really—”
Shen Yan was about to respond but suddenly froze, staring at Su Yunzhe in surprise. “What… what did you say?”
Su Yunzhe set him down in the corner of the sofa, sitting beside him with one arm on the armrest, casually enclosing Shen Yan in his embrace. His smile was knowing and warm. “Since my dear wife has such good taste to fall for me, how could you ever have been interested in someone like Duan Yang, right?”
Shen Yan almost nodded in agreement, but something felt off. If he nodded, it would imply that he really had never liked Duan Yang. But the Shen Yan of this world couldn’t have possibly never had feelings for Duan Yang, could he?
Plus, Su Yunzhe’s smile seemed suspicious!
“You… do you know something?” Shen Yan asked, looking at him with a hint of guilt.
Su Yunzhe looked innocent. “No, why? Have you been hiding something from me?”
“No!” Shen Yan quickly shook his head, the denial so swift it was almost comical. It was clear he was lying.
It seemed like Su Yunzhe didn’t notice, or maybe he chose not to. He nodded and said, “Good. I’m glad. Now, let’s get you upstairs to sleep.”
With that, he scooped Shen Yan up again and carried him upstairs. Just before they reached the bedroom, he stopped and reminded him, “Were you running down the stairs earlier? Don’t do that again. You’re pregnant now; you need to be extra careful.”
This reminder made Shen Yan angry again. He shot Su Yunzhe an annoyed glare. “Whose fault is that?”
Su Yunzhe, however, was unbothered. “It’s my fault. It won’t happen again!”
Shen Yan rolled his eyes. “Next time, no more touching me unless you wear protection!”
“Understood!” Su Yunzhe responded obediently, carrying him into the bedroom and gently placing him on the bed. He leaned down to kiss his lips, tenderly comforting him.
The kiss was so soft and careful, as if he feared Shen Yan might break if he kissed him too hard. He didn’t dare press his body against him either, his movements cautious and restrained.
Shen Yan couldn’t help but laugh, lightly biting his lips in playful irritation. “You fool!” Then, without hesitation, he opened his mouth, inviting his tongue inside.
It was fine. Since he was already pregnant, he might as well embrace it.
Actually, having a child with Su Yunzhe didn’t seem too bad. After all, Su Yunzhe was a big fool, and having a little fool didn’t seem like a terrible idea.
All the frustration Shen Yan had built up from his pregnancy seemed to dissolve in that moment, and a small thread of happiness appeared. After all, he was having a child with someone he liked.
However, as Su Yunzhe went to take a shower and Shen Yan lay in bed ready to sleep, his mind wandered back to the strange words Su Yunzhe had said earlier, and the way he had smiled. Something didn’t seem quite right.
According to Su Yunzhe’s nature, he would have been upset about those diaries, but he hadn’t been. He even said he believed Shen Yan had never liked Duan Yang.
How did he know that?
Wait a minute!
Shen Yan sat up abruptly, frustrated with himself. Was his brain malfunctioning?
People always said that pregnancy made women forgetful, but he was a man—why was he being so forgetful already?
Earlier that day, he had no memory of undergoing the fertilization procedure at the hospital. And just now, he had carelessly told Su Yunzhe that the diaries weren’t his. Of course, Su Yunzhe would suspect something!
No wonder Su Yunzhe had been so strangely cryptic earlier. Could he have figured something out?
Actually, if he did guess it, what did it matter? What Shen Yan was worried about was Su Yunzhe misunderstanding things, jumping to conclusions.
As Su Yunzhe finished his shower and came out, Shen Yan quickly climbed to the end of the bed and called him, “Hey, come here.”
Su Yunzhe, wearing nothing but a towel, his hair wet and dripping, couldn’t help but smile as he sat beside Shen Yan, pinching his cheek. “What, are you that unsatisfied? Too bad you’re pregnant; I can’t really satisfy you right now.”
“Get off!” Shen Yan swatted his hand away, clearly serious. “I need to ask you something.”
Shen Yan turned Su Yunzhe to face him, making him look into his eyes, and seriously asked, “Tell me the truth, do you know something about me?”
Su Yunzhe’s eyes darkened slightly as he gently stroked Shen Yan’s cheek. He nodded. “I think… you might not be Shen Yan.”
Shen Yan froze for a moment before laughing. “As expected, you figured it out. When did you know?”
Su Yunzhe hadn’t expected him to admit it so quickly. He had thought this secret about Shen Yan couldn’t be discovered.
“Just now, when you told me that the diaries weren’t written by you,” Su Yunzhe replied.
He had already noticed something strange about Shen Yan. When Shen Yan had rushed down and said the diaries weren’t his, he had suddenly realized that the person in front of him was likely the same Shen Yan who had once been madly in love with Duan Yang.
But so what?
He liked this Shen Yan, and that was all that mattered.
So, beyond a bit of surprise, he didn’t feel much else about it.
Shen Yan sighed helplessly. “I knew it, I’m such a fool! I made such a rookie mistake.”
Su Yunzhe poked his puffed-up cheek and smiled. “Why keep secrets from your husband? Isn’t your husband allowed to know?”
Shen Yan opened his mouth and bit his finger. “Husband, husband? We’re not even married yet. Who’s your husband? And what do you mean I’m not Shen Yan? I am Shen Yan! It’s just…”
He looked at Su Yunzhe awkwardly. “You might not believe this, but I’m actually not the Shen Yan of this world. I don’t know how it happened, but one day I woke up here, and suddenly I was married to a scumbag. And for some reason, I also know that…”
He pointed at himself, “The original Shen Yan’s fate is miserable—he’s going to be hurt by Duan Yang, get pregnant, get into a car accident, have a miscarriage, and worst of all… he’s going to forgive Duan Yang and end up with him. I couldn’t stand that, so I wanted to divorce him, and then… well, you know the rest.”
Su Yunzhe’s ability to process this was impressive. He didn’t seem surprised at all. He just asked, “So, when you met me, was it right after you came to this world?”
Shen Yan shook his head. “I was locked up for a week. But you were the first normal person I met.”
Su Yunzhe’s mood lifted slightly. “Fate, right?”
Shen Yan rolled his eyes but couldn’t help smiling. Maybe, as Su Yunzhe said, it was fate. Though the word sounded cliché, it felt kind of beautiful.
Suddenly, Su Yunzhe changed the topic. “You said you know the fate of the original Shen Yan, but because of your connections, you probably know the fates of other people related to him, right? Like… me? You know I’m going to end up in jail, right? Is that why you keep warning me not to break the law?”
…
Shen Yan stared at him, stunned. How did Su Yunzhe make such a direct connection? And he was absolutely right!
It seemed there was no hiding it now.
“Okay, fine. I’ll tell you the truth. This world is from a book I’ve read. The original Shen Yan is the protagonist, and the story is mainly about him and Duan Yang. The ending is that he ends up with Duan Yang. You…”
Shen Yan looked at Su Yunzhe, paused for a moment, then continued, “You’re the big villain in the book. You’re really bad! I don’t know the full details because I don’t like reading about you, so I skipped those parts. But the ending is that you caused Duan Yang’s downfall, and then you ended up in jail. That’s why I’ve always been worried about you having anything to do with Duan Yang. And… um?”
He was about to continue when Su Yunzhe suddenly pinched his chin and leaned in, glaring at him. “So you didn’t like reading about me, but you read all about Duan Yang?”
Shen Yan was speechless. Was Su Yunzhe a vinegar jar in disguise? He was jealous over this too?
“I followed Duan Yang’s story because I wanted to see the original Shen Yan get revenge on him. What else could it be? Besides, you’re hardly in the book! Whenever you show up, it’s always to cause trouble. I really didn’t like those parts. And you’re nothing like the character in the book. In the book, Su Yunzhe is a bad guy. If you were like that, I wouldn’t like you!”
Su Yunzhe laughed. “But you still like me, don’t you? Too bad, your husband’s going to jail. What will we do?”
“Don’t talk nonsense!” Shen Yan glared at him. “Actually, since I got to this world, the story hasn’t gone according to the original plot. The book said you had some grudge with Duan Yang, which made you hate him, but that’s not the case here. I was just worried because I saw you had a falling out with him over me recently, and I thought the plot might be going back to the original. But…”
He looked at Su Yunzhe with a smile, his eyes full of trust. “I believe in you. You won’t do those things. So, the ending from the book won’t happen. I’m sure of it.”
Su Yunzhe gently took his hand and kissed it, nodding. “I promise you, it won’t happen.”
“Mm! Then it’s settled. I’m tired, time to sleep.”
Shen Yan, full and content, immediately felt sleepy. With the biggest secret finally out in the open, he felt a sense of relief. He crawled into bed and was asleep within moments.
Su Yunzhe finished drying his hair and lay down beside him. He turned on his side, gazing at Shen Yan’s peaceful face as he slept. The emotions in his heart were hard to put into words.
In just one day, he had received two pieces of good news.
The person he liked, the person he wanted to spend his life with, was carrying his child. He had been caught off guard, but after calming down, he felt happy. And this Shen Yan was his, truly his—no connection to any other man.
But…
He softly stroked Shen Yan’s soft hair, an unexplainable feeling of fear creeping into his heart.
What if one day, he woke up, and his Shen Yan had returned to his original world, while this Shen Yan, the one in this world, had come back instead?
