Chapter 84

This was the first time Shen Yan had ever adapted a script, and it was even his own work. The process of making cuts and deciding what to keep was an agonizing task for him. Every time he had to delete a scene or remove a character, he felt like it would ruin the integrity of the story.

He spent an entire afternoon arguing with Bi Fan over this, but in the end, he lost.

Bi Fan was usually easygoing, especially since Shen Yan was Shen Fei’s younger brother. That made him even more approachable. But when it came to work, he changed completely. He became uncompromising, refusing to back down on what he believed was right. In the end, he got so irritated that he snapped at Shen Yan, calling him an outsider.

Well…

Shen Yan was a bit annoyed!

However, when he returned home and calmed down, he realized that, in fact, he was a complete amateur when it came to script adaptation.

He even went so far as to watch all of Bi Fan’s previous works to understand his approach.

There weren’t many works, but each had its own unique charm, no wonder Bi Fan had won so many awards.

So Shen Yan seriously reflected on himself, acknowledging that he wasn’t very professional and that his deep emotional attachment to his own work made him too subjective in the adaptation process.

The next day, he directly told Bi Fan that he would participate in script discussions but not do the actual adaptation work. He suggested they hand the adaptation task to someone more professional.

Bi Fan, after thinking it over at home, realized his attitude had been bad. He had planned to apologize to Shen Yan today, but before he could, Shen Yan announced he would no longer take on the adaptation. Bi Fan immediately assumed that Shen Yan was angry with him and quickly apologized, his sincerity so obvious that it made Shen Yan both laugh and cry.

Once Shen Yan repeatedly assured him that he wasn’t angry, Bi Fan finally seemed relieved.

Though letting go of the adaptation rights might seem irresponsible, Shen Yan trusted Bi Fan’s abilities. He believed the final product wouldn’t be bad.

Shen Yan was glad to have one less thing on his plate. After all, he had only taken on the adaptation to keep himself busy. Now that the little one had come over, he didn’t need to be distracted anymore. Every evening, he picked up the little one from school, took him out for delicious food, helped him with homework—the days were wonderfully fulfilling.

However, while Shen Yan was happy, Mrs. Su was not.

She had only just managed to get Su Yunzhe to agree to return to the country, and after a few days at home, he moved out again. That made her feel very upset. However, she thought she could make up for it by picking up her beloved grandson from school every day since Su Yunzhe was too busy with work.

But now, after Su Yunzhe and his son had moved out, she couldn’t see her precious grandson at all. Every time she called Su Yunzhe to ask if she could pick up the little one from school, he would give the same response: “No need, Mom, Shen Yan will go.”

Before she could say anything more, he’d hang up, citing work as the reason.

Did he still consider her his real mother?

And then there was Shen Yan…

After Mrs. Su was rejected for the eighth time, she sat silently on the sofa, muttering Shen Yan’s name in frustration.

A few days later, Shen Yan received news from Shen Fei—The Su family was hosting a banquet over the weekend.

“They’ve invited all the eligible young women in the city. Look, even your sister has been invited. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Mrs. Su is clearly trying to find a wife for Su Yunzhe!” Shen Fei said, holding Su Zihang and feeding him while talking to Shen Yan.

Shen Yan, with his mouth full of food and cheeks puffed out like a hamster, looked confused. “What about Lin Xia?”

Although Su Yunzhe hadn’t explained, Shen Yan could tell that Lin Xia was likely the woman the Shen family had chosen for him. So how had it suddenly turned into a “selection of a wife” event in just a few days?

Shen Fei gave him a sidelong glance. “Hey, you’ve never chased anyone, have you? If you really want to pursue someone, pay more attention! What’s with spending all your time playing with his son? Focus on Su Yunzhe for once! If you keep this up, soon it won’t be a dance, it’ll be Su Yunzhe’s wedding!”

“Dad’s getting married?” The little one, who had been seriously eating, suddenly looked up at Shen Fei and asked, “Is Dad going to marry Brother?”

Er…

Shen Fei froze for a moment, and the little one broke into a big grin, clapping his hands. “Great! That way Hang Hang can sleep with Brother every day, and there’s also Dad. We three together! Hang Hang likes that the most!”

“Sleep together?” Shen Fei looked at Shen Yan, her expression clearly showing that she thought she had heard wrong.

Could it be? Her younger brother had never even been in a relationship, and here he was, sleeping together with someone after just a few days?

She didn’t quite believe it!

Shen Yan remained silent, but the little one was already nodding seriously. “Yeah, sleep together. Last time, Hang Hang slept between Dad and Brother. It was so fun. But…”

The little one scratched his head. “In the morning, Brother was in the middle, and Dad was holding onto Brother.”

Now, Shen Yan was a bit embarrassed. The truth was, that night, the little one had been tossing and turning in his sleep, and both he and Su Yunzhe had to keep adjusting their positions. At one point, Su Yunzhe ended up sleeping on his side, and then Shen Yan had to switch places. The entire night, neither of them had gotten much rest. When the little one woke up in the morning, it happened to be when they were both squished together and couldn’t move anymore.

As for Su Yunzhe holding him…

It was just incidental, nothing more.

What else could it be? The little one was sleeping beside them, were they supposed to do something else?

However, to someone who didn’t know the situation, these things could sound very suggestive.

Shen Fei looked at Shen Yan as if he were an alien. “You… just like that with him? Yan Yan, it’s not that I’m conservative, but seriously… this is too fast! You’ve only known him for a few days. Do you even know him? You’ve already slept with him, and you don’t suspect that he’s just a careless playboy, someone who’s just fooling around with you? Otherwise, why would he agree to hold such a ridiculous banquet? Don’t get fooled and end up helping him count his money!”

Shen Yan couldn’t help but laugh, though he understood Shen Fei’s concern. After all, Shen Fei didn’t know what kind of relationship he had with Su Yunzhe.

From Shen Fei’s perspective, Su Yunzhe was just a rich young man who had recently returned to the country, with a bad reputation. Although after meeting Su Yunzhe at home, she had slightly changed her opinion and was no longer as unsupportive of Shen Yan pursuing him, the image of Su Yunzhe as a playboy still lingered. Shen Fei surely worried that Shen Yan might be taken advantage of.

“How about this? On the day of the banquet, you take me along so I can see for myself if he’s really the playboy everyone says he is. If he is, I’ll give up on the idea. From then on, I’ll pretend he doesn’t even exist. What do you think?”

Shen Yan didn’t try to explain. First of all, Shen Fei wouldn’t believe him if he told her that he and Su Yunzhe had only been sleeping in the same bed and nothing else. Second, the truth was, they had only slept together because they didn’t have the chance to do anything more. In fact, Shen Yan was very much looking forward to it, and he suspected Su Yunzhe was even more eager than him. There was no need to explain all of that.

Rather than explaining to Shen Fei, he actually preferred that she get to know Su Yunzhe better. Although the last time Su Yunzhe had made breakfast for their family and chatted warmly with everyone, improving the Shen family’s attitude toward him, it seemed that everyone still remained cautious and suspicious about his behavior in relationships.

Shen Yan didn’t want his family to have doubts. He wanted them to know that the person he chose to be with was trustworthy and perfect, and he wanted them to see that he was happy.

He thought the banquet would be a good opportunity. It would let Shen Fei see for herself whether Su Yunzhe really was the kind of flirt everyone said he was. It could also be a chance to push Su Yunzhe to remember something—recently, the little one had been bringing up memories from the past, but Su Yunzhe still hadn’t remembered anything. However, when he looked at Shen Yan with that puzzled expression, it seemed like more and more memories were resurfacing, especially when the little one mentioned past experiences.

Shen Yan felt that the situation might be different for him. He might need a bigger shock to trigger his memories.

A banquet with all the city’s young ladies… It was actually a good idea!

Shen Fei didn’t know what he was thinking, but seeing the confident look on his face, she didn’t want to ruin his mood. “Okay, go ahead and see for yourself what kind of person he is. Don’t think too highly of him just because he agreed to throw this banquet. There’s definitely no integrity there. Also, it seems like Mrs. Su has been busy arranging for her son’s marriage. If she finds out you have feelings for her son, she probably won’t be very kind to you. But we don’t need to be afraid of her. If she dares to show you attitude, I’ll definitely help you fight back!”

Shen Yan couldn’t help but laugh. That was definitely his sister.

As for Su Yunzhe, Shen Yan could guarantee that he had no idea about the banquet.

He planned on not telling him.

So, on the weekend, when Su Yunzhe was called back home and found out about the banquet, all the guests had already arrived.

When Su Yunzhe was dragged into the cloakroom by Mrs. Su to change, there was a brief moment when he nearly lost his temper and almost argued with her.

But he held back, patiently explaining, “Mom, I already told you I have someone. Why are you…”

“What do you mean by that? I didn’t say I was looking for a match for you. This is just a normal banquet to welcome you and Hang Hang back home. What are you thinking? Do you really think I would deliberately break up a couple? Do you really think I’m that bad? It’s just a gathering with close friends and family who want to meet you since you’re back. I can’t just refuse, can I? Hurry up and change, come downstairs and say hello, okay?”

Mrs. Su’s gentle attitude left Su Yunzhe with no choice but to comply. The key was that she insisted it wasn’t a matchmaking event.

Forget it. He’d just go downstairs and deal with it.

With that in mind, Su Yunzhe was reluctantly led downstairs by Mrs. Su, and then, he saw Shen Fei.

In that moment, Su Yunzhe almost felt guilty, nearly turning around to go back upstairs.

But it was too late. Shen Fei had already seen him, and her expression was full of disdain and judgment, as if she were confronting someone who had played with her younger brother’s feelings.

Su Yunzhe couldn’t help but laugh bitterly in his heart, but he forced himself to walk up to her and greet her. “Sis, you’re here too?”

When Shen Fei saw him coming down, dressed up to attract the attention of all the women in the room, she couldn’t hide her displeasure. What kind of person was he? He’d already slept with her silly brother, and now he was flirting with all these women. Scumbag!

“Who’s your sister? Don’t call me that. I’m not some old lady, alright?” Shen Fei snapped.

Su Yunzhe felt helpless. The little bit of good impression he had painstakingly built with the Shen family seemed to be completely ruined. It really wasn’t his fault!

But on the surface, he still had to force a smile. “Wasn’t it Yan Yan who asked you to come? Did you come alone, Sis?”

Shen Fei gave him a fake smile. “I came with Yan Yan. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have bothered showing up!”

“Yan Yan’s here? Where is he?” Su Yunzhe’s heart leaped with joy, and he immediately began scanning the crowd with his tall frame, but he couldn’t spot Shen Yan anywhere.

Shen Fei didn’t miss the look of excitement in his eyes. She quietly calculated and then responded, “He said he had something to take care of, so he didn’t come in with me. He’s still outside…”

Before Shen Fei could finish her sentence, Su Yunzhe had already quickly moved through the crowd and was heading outside.

The banquet had already begun, and Su Yunzhe was the one who had arrived late. So, outside, aside from the reception staff, there was no one else around.

Su Yunzhe refused to give up, scanning the area several times, but he still couldn’t find Shen Yan. He began to suspect that Shen Fei had lied to him out of spite.

He stood there, feeling a little lost, his gaze fixed on the lawn, when suddenly someone tapped him on the shoulder from behind. A sweet, soft girl’s voice reached his ears, “Are you waiting for me, sir?”

Impatient, he turned around, ready to speak, but when he saw the person who had spoken, he froze, and a delighted smile spread across his face.

He stepped forward, took her hand, leaned down slightly, and softly laughed, “Yes, I’m waiting for you!”
