Chapter 36

The man looked at him in surprise and asked, “Who are you talking about?”

“Lü Chi, Senior Lü Chi,” Fan Xing replied.

Thinking that he might have forgotten again, Fan Xing was about to remind him, but the man’s contemplative gaze fell on him.

Fan Xing suddenly felt a bit embarrassed, and the words he wanted to say next involuntarily got stuck in his throat. He quickly changed his tune and said, “I… just asked on a whim.”

Then he turned around, facing away from the man, feeling somewhat ashamed. He wondered why he had asked such a question and what it had to do with him.

He Qingmo’s eyes, however, had a hint of a sweet smile. He chose honesty over teasing the child when his conscience kicked in. He replied casually, “No.”

Fan Xing was puzzled for a moment, and his previous embarrassment dissipated. He even felt a bit happy. But suddenly, he remembered something and turned to look at the man, saying, “Really? But Senior Lü Chi said that when he was sick, you stayed up all night to take care of him.”

He Qingmo frowned slightly and asked, “He said that?”

Fan Xing nodded, feeling a bit perplexed.

He Qingmo wasn’t the type to lie about such things, and Lü Chi didn’t seem like someone who would make things up.

“Ah!” Fan Xing suddenly realized and said, “Could it be that you’ve forgotten? When I first mentioned Senior Lü Chi to you, you didn’t remember him at all. Maybe you did take care of him all night, but you forgot?”

Seeing the child’s confident expression, He Qingmo had a strong urge to give him a playful scolding, but he restrained himself. After all, Fan Xing had a slight fever, and he had injuries on his face.

So, he put his phone aside, leaned down, and pushed the child to the foot of the bed, locking eyes with him. With a mischievous tone, he asked, “So, do you believe him or do you believe your husband? Hmm?”

The child immediately got the message and, with unclear words, replied, “You… I’m sleepy.” Then he carefully pulled the blanket over himself and lay down.

The man pinched his cheek affectionately, saying, “That’s right, go to sleep, my dear!” He turned off the bedside lamp on Fan Xing’s side and continued working.

After he finished all his tasks, the child was sleeping soundly again due to the effects of the medicine. The man tested his temperature, confirming that the fever had completely subsided. He finally felt relieved.

Before lying down to rest, he remembered Fan Xing’s question from earlier and called Song Yang.

“Check on Lü Chi,” he instructed briefly.

“Lü Chi?” Song Yang, on the other end of the call, seemed half-asleep and somewhat slow to react. After a few seconds, he said, “You mean the one from the computer science department at Qing University?”

“Yes.”

“He… yes,” Song Yang replied with some confusion. He couldn’t help but wonder why He Qingmo, who had never paid much attention to these people before, was inquiring about Lü Chi. This was the second time he had asked about him, as he had inquired about Lü Chi’s identity before giving a lecture at Qing University. But Song Yang knew that He Qingmo disliked explaining such matters, so he didn’t press further.

He Qingmo finished discussing the matter and was about to hang up, but Song Yang remembered something else. “The police contacted me. They said the owner of the car from the accident has awakened. He was driving under the influence, so last night’s incident was indeed an accident.”

“Okay.”

“How’s Fan Xing doing?” Song Yang asked.

“He’s fine,” He Qingmo replied, sounding a bit tired. He didn’t feel like engaging in further conversation, so he hung up the phone.

Song Yang was now awake and decided to call Xiao Yu, the owner of the Yu Palace, to inquire about Lü Chi’s situation. He realized that he needed to be more attentive to the situation in the M country, as he had witnessed how concerned He Qingmo had been last night.

Originally, they were on an inspection trip to an overseas project, and they hadn’t planned to return last night, given how late it was. However, as soon as they arrived at the hotel, He Qingmo received a call and immediately drove back to the city.

The city was nearby, just a two-hour drive, but Song Yang couldn’t help but imagine that if it had been farther away, He Qingmo might have arranged a helicopter to return home.

He sped through the streets and arrived at the hospital, rushing inside.

Having witnessed such an anxious side of He Qingmo, Song Yang believed that Fan Xing was well on his way to becoming the CEO’s wife.

That’s great! It would save him the trouble of constantly going to the Yu Palace to find people. It was quite a hassle.

Fan Xing slept for a whole day and night. When he woke up, his fever had subsided, and he felt refreshed.

However, the man sleeping beside him was in a deep slumber, and there were faint signs of bruising on his face. He had a few stubbles on his chin, and even while asleep, a sense of dishevelment was evident.

Fan Xing couldn’t resist reaching out, and his fair fingertips lightly landed on the man’s face. The stubble at the beginning of the beard was slightly prickly, and when his fingertips brushed over it, it tickled.

The man, in his dream, furrowed his brows, clearly sensing the disturbance.

Fan Xing quickly withdrew his fingers and realized what he had done. His face suddenly turned red, and he hurriedly got out of bed.

While washing his face, he continued to reflect on why he had acted that way. He couldn’t quite understand it, but he concluded that He Qingmo was just too good-looking, and he had a fondness for handsome people.

After getting ready, he went downstairs to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

Considering that He Qingmo was likely still fast asleep and wouldn’t have breakfast, Fan Xing quickly prepared something for himself. Then, he changed into fresh clothes and went to the market to buy ingredients for lunch, making sure to get the dishes He Qingmo liked.

As he was almost done with the preparations, the doorbell rang.

He wiped his hands, rushed over to check the security camera, and was surprised to find Fan Meixi, Gu Mingyu, and a man wearing golden-rimmed glasses, who was Gu Yongchang, standing at the door.

Fan Xing stared at the monitor but didn’t open the door or say anything.

After not getting a response, Fan Meixi took out her phone and started calling. Simultaneously, Fan Xing’s phone on the coffee table began to ring.

Fan Xing went over to pick up the phone and hesitated for a second between answering and hanging up. Finally, he threw the phone aside and turned to go back to the kitchen to continue cooking, not wanting to deal with them at the moment.

He Qingmo lazily descended the stairs and walked toward the door.

Fan Xing subconsciously grabbed his arm and asked, “Brother, what are you going to do?”

Fan Xing hadn’t forgotten the image of He Qingmo getting into a physical altercation.

The man turned to look at him, and his gaze landed precisely on the left side of Fan Xing’s face, where the swelling had subsided but the burn near his eye corner was still quite noticeable.

“I’m going out to teach someone a lesson!” He Qingmo said.

“Brother!” Fan Xing tightly held onto his arm and tried to negotiate in a friendly manner, “Can’t we just let it go?”

He Qingmo didn’t seem too willing to compromise. “Just let it go after he hit my wife?”

!
Fan Xing felt a bit embarrassed by the man calling him “wife.” He lowered his head and avoided the man’s gaze, saying softly, “I know you’re trying to stand up for me, and I appreciate it. But can I handle this on my own? I don’t want to see them right now.”

The man’s eyes darkened, and he focused on the reddened earlobe of the young man. Suddenly, a smile played on his lips, and he said teasingly, “Just a ‘thank you’ and you want to get rid of me? Am I that easy to please, husband?”

Fan Xing knew he should thank the man properly, but his sudden request caught him off guard. The man’s attitude made him inexplicably nervous. He instinctively responded, “I’ve prepared the dishes you like for lunch. Is that okay?”

The man suppressed a smile and shook his head decisively, “No.”

Fan Xing asked, “Then what would you like me to do?”

The man thought for a moment and suggested, “How about a kiss?”

Fan Xing was taken aback, looking at the man with wide eyes, like a startled rabbit. Then he remembered something and quickly glanced at the security camera. The Gu family was still waiting at the door.

He felt even more embarrassed, but before he could apologize, the man spoke again, “They can’t see us. Besides, even if they do, what’s the harm in showing affection to your husband in front of them?”

Fan Xing was left speechless. The man was clearly enjoying his embarrassment. Feeling a bit annoyed, Fan Xing steeled himself, tiptoed, and placed a kiss on the man’s cheek. He then asked, “Is that enough?”

The man looked surprised and asked, “Where did you kiss?”

Fan Xing wondered if he had done something wrong again. Why was it so complicated? He was about to explain, but the man lowered his head and pointed at his lips, saying, “I meant here.”

They were so close that Fan Xing felt their lips almost touching. He blushed, hesitated, and tried to move away, but the man circled his waist, leaving him with no room to escape.

The man’s deep voice rang out again, with a hint of a playful tone, “Didn’t we agree you’d thank your husband? Are you having second thoughts?”

Fan Xing stammered, “But… You didn’t want me to kiss you last time.”

However, when he looked into the man’s eyes, he found himself at a loss for words. His heart raced even faster, making him more flustered than when he kissed the man for the first time.

The man didn’t rush him, just looked at him, his dark eyes filled with a light smile, incredibly attractive.

Fan Xing thought his mind must be malfunctioning. The doorbell continued to ring, and from his current angle, he could still see the Gu family anxiously waiting outside. Despite that, he inexplicably leaned in and kissed the man’s lips.

It felt warm, soft, almost like… cotton candy.

In Fan Xing’s mind, colorful cotton candy suddenly appeared. Then, the man’s large hand grasped the back of his head, and Fan Xing was turned around, pressed against the wall. The cotton candy seemed to make its way into his mouth on its own.

He gasped.

Fan Xing realized what had just happened and felt his brain couldn’t keep up. His hands clung tightly to the man’s clothing at the waist, his knuckles turning white. He was so nervous that he forgot to breathe and completely surrendered to the man’s guidance.

Suddenly, Fan Meixi’s voice came through, “Fan Xing, is it you? I’m your mother…”

It turned out that when the man had pressed him against the wall, his back had accidentally triggered the security camera, allowing the outside call to connect.

Fan Xing finally snapped out of it, flustered and pushed the man away. They were still at the door, but they had been engaged in such an intimate act, leaving the young man feeling utterly embarrassed, wishing he could find a hole to hide in.

However, the man, still not satisfied, only slightly loosened his lips, pinched Fan Xing’s chin, and in a low, husky voice, uttered, “Focus,” then kissed him again, with more intensity than before.

Fan Xing, now thoroughly kissed, was short of breath, his brain starved of oxygen. He went limp, unable to resist, with his sole thought being not to make any sound that could be heard from outside.

At this moment, the Gu family had been waiting outside for a long time, and their expressions were grim. It wasn’t that they knew what was happening inside but they were concerned about Fan Xing, or more precisely, about He Qingmo’s attitude. After all, He Qingmo’s attitude could determine the fate of the Gu family.

If they hadn’t heard from Ji Jin yesterday that He Qingmo didn’t allow visitors, they would have come yesterday. They had finally managed to come today, leaving early in the morning, knocking on the door for quite some time without any response, and not being able to reach Fan Xing on his phone.

All of these things could be explained: Fan Xing not being home, not hearing the phone ring. However, the call was now answered, and it was evident that someone was inside, yet they were still being denied entry. Wasn’t this attitude quite clear?

Gu Yongchang’s face was dark, and he remained silent, his gaze fixed on Fan Meixi.

Fan Meixi, on the other hand, hadn’t given up. She had been persistently calling at the door. After a while, He Qingmo inside became irritated, let go of Fan Xing, shouted towards the surveillance, “Get lost!” and then promptly ended the call. He intended to continue what they were doing.

The bewildered Fan Xing, whose brain had short-circuited from the previous kiss, finally woke up after hearing this shout. He suddenly smelled a burnt odor in the air, exclaimed, “Oh no, my food,” and pushed past the man who had approached him to run into the kitchen.

The man, whose interrupted mood was now irritated, silently noted another point against the Gu family in his heart and then followed Fan Xing into the kitchen.

Inside, Fan Xing poured the blackened food into the trash can and then turned to wash the pot. While he stood by the sink, he seemed lost in thought.

Something had triggered his thoughts, and before the redness on his face could fade, it turned as red as a tomato, but he quickly shook his head to dispel any wandering thoughts. However, as he turned around, he began to daydream once again.

The man leaned against the door, watching Fan Xing for a while, but the young man didn’t notice.

After finally finishing washing the pot, Fan Xing turned to see the man’s gaze and froze. In the next moment, his entire face turned red. In a hurry, he lowered his head and said softly, “The kitchen is filled with smoke. Brother, please go outside.”

The man, however, shook his head and said, “It’s not good for me to leave. I’ll stay with you.”

In fact, this wasn’t the first time he had stood in the kitchen to watch Fan Xing cook. If he was at home with no work to do, he would often come into the kitchen, and Fan Xing had become accustomed to it.

However, Fan Xing’s mind was currently frozen. Standing in front of the counter, looking at the prepared ingredients that he recognized, he couldn’t remember what to do next. Every time he tried to think, the memory of the man’s kiss against the wall would intrude, causing his face to blush and disrupting his thoughts.

To make things worse, the main culprit was standing right there, refusing to leave.

After standing in front of the counter for five minutes, unable to accomplish anything, Fan Xing eventually sighed in resignation. He glanced at the man and softly said, “Brother, can you please go outside?”

His gentle voice carried a helpless plea, making it almost unforgivable to refuse him.

The man’s heart softened. While he enjoyed seeing Fan Xing’s shy demeanor, he had gone too far and couldn’t bear to see him like this

So, he let go of the young man and walked out.

Once he left, Fan Xing finally breathed a sigh of relief. His mind gradually became clearer, although he still felt nervous when thinking about what had just happened. Nevertheless, he managed to prepare lunch smoothly.

However, this couldn’t change the fact that he felt self-conscious whenever he saw He Qingmo. His face would turn red as soon as their eyes met, and he instinctively avoided eye contact.

During lunch, he ate quickly with his head down. After finishing the meal, he stood up and said, “I need to go to school. Goodbye, Brother.”

As he attempted to leave, the man grabbed his wrist. Fan Xing turned around, avoiding direct eye contact with him, and softly explained, “I really have to go to school. I missed my first day of classes yesterday, and I can’t afford to miss more. Besides…”

He Qingmo’s fingertips gently caressed Fan Xing’s delicate wrist as he spoke in a somewhat displeased tone, “What about this? You’ve ruined your looks. Behave and stay home until the injury heals. If it leaves a scar, how can I proudly take you outside?”

Fan Xing was taken aback and quickly responded, “Huh? But I already look ugly, Brother. Didn’t you say that I got thinner and darker, and I became ugly? What’s the big deal if I have another scar?”

Hey? The young boy had quite some courage to talk back to him.

A faint smile appeared in the man’s eyes as he simply watched Fan Xing without saying anything.

Suddenly, a scene from earlier, at the entrance, crossed Fan Xing’s mind. He realized that the man had looked at him the same way back then. His heart started pounding erratically, and he quickly pulled his hand away from the man, turning his back to him, and said, “I’ll call the school for leave, then.” He rushed out to get his phone.

The man’s pleasant voice reached him, “That’s a good boy. I’ll teach you how to write this afternoon.”

“Really?” Fan Xing turned around, his clear eyes filled with undisguised excitement.

He couldn’t help it; He Qingmo’s handwriting was so beautiful, but he rarely had the time to teach him.

Fan Xing had practiced on his own for some time, and although he had made some progress, he always felt that his handwriting was inferior to He Qingmo’s.

Today, the man had the time to teach him, and he was overjoyed.

“Really!” the man confirmed with a smile.

Having received a definite answer, the young boy happily hummed a tune as he called his counselor to request leave.

It was quite easy for him to get a leave since the car accident outside Qing University involved its students, and the police had notified the school.

After obtaining his leave, he rushed upstairs to find some paper and a pen. He sat obediently, waiting for He Qingmo with anticipation and happiness that he couldn’t hide.

He Qingmo had never seen someone so easily content. A while ago, Fan Xing was so nervous and overwhelmed by the kiss that he couldn’t even make eye contact. But now, he was completely absorbed in writing and had forgotten about everything else.

He wondered what Fan Xing had been through to make him appear so easily satisfied. However, he didn’t want to inquire and potentially bring up unpleasant memories, so he chose to remain silent.

In the afternoon, He Qingmo accompanied him to practice writing. They repeatedly wrote Fan Xing’s name hundreds of times until he finally found some techniques and started writing in a more presentable manner. He was ecstatic and couldn’t stop writing. After filling up a page, he suddenly thought of something and turned to the man. “Brother, what about your name? Can you teach me to write it?”

The man gladly agreed.

However, He Qingmo’s name had quite a few strokes, and he had a habit of scribbling when signing his name. Although it looked nice, it was challenging for Fan Xing, who struggled even with regular script. So, after trying for a while, there wasn’t much progress. Whenever the man let go, what he wrote looked like gibberish.

He was frustrated and wrinkled his nose, turned a page, and prepared to continue. But his phone received a message. He thought it might be from Qin Xiuming’s group. At lunch, Qin Xiuming had sent him a message about the college preparing for a freshman welcoming party, and the Student Union wanted to know if he had any creative ideas because he had recently returned from abroad.

He had replied to Qin Xiuming earlier, saying that he wasn’t capable of anything and would be content just being an audience. However, Qin Xiuming seemed to insist, so he probably wanted to talk to him about this again.

But it wasn’t Qin Xiuming’s message. It was from Fan Meixi, and she sent many messages in rapid succession. The message notification sound kept repeating within three minutes.

Seeing Fan Meixi’s name, Fan Xing didn’t even want to open the messages. He immediately put his phone on silent mode, turned the screen face down, and picked up the pen to continue writing.

He Qingmo observed him and decided to break the silence. “Are you planning to keep avoiding her?”

Fan Xing turned back, somewhat surprised by the question because He Qingmo had never asked about his relationship with Fan Meixi and the Gu family.

But he understood that the man was showing concern.

He shook his head and replied softly, “I can’t avoid her forever. I just don’t want to see her right now.”

He knew Fan Meixi’s personality well. She would not give up until she got what she wanted.

He Qingmo didn’t say anything, he just looked at him.

This was the first time Fan Xing had explicitly stated that he didn’t want to see Fan Meixi. Even though they hadn’t seen each other much before, if Fan Meixi contacted him, he had usually agreed to meet her. At least, on the surface, they had maintained an amicable relationship.

But now Fan Xing’s attitude had clearly changed.

He Qingmo thought it was for the better. A mother like Fan Meixi was better avoided.

However, he also had some concerns for Fan Xing. Fan Xing wasn’t one to hold grudges, especially against his own mother. To have reached the point of not wanting to see her, it was evident that he had been deeply hurt.

Fan Xing gave a soft smile and said, “Are you worried about me, Brother? Don’t be. Actually, my relationship with her has always been about the same, and I’ve gotten used to it.”

He Qingmo’s gaze darkened, and he reached out to ruffle Fan Xing’s hair. Then, he changed the subject, “Come on, I’ll take you out for something delicious tonight. Go upstairs and change your clothes.”

Fan Xing obediently got up from the man’s lap and remembered something. He asked, “Brother, did you help Gu Mingyu?”

Fan Xing hadn’t been online for the past two days, so he wasn’t aware of the situation. Actually, Gu Mingyu coming to him in a fit of anger wasn’t just because he thought Fan Xing helped him.

The real reason, He Qingmo was very clear about it because he was Gu Mingyu’s sugar daddy.

Gu Mingyu was someone he had specifically asked the production team to take good care of.

After the incident with Gu Mingyu, the production team quickly reported the details to He Qingmo.

It turned out that there were some internal issues within the production team. Some people were dissatisfied with Gu Mingyu getting special treatment, so they deliberately made things difficult for him. They picked on everything Gu Mingyu disliked, from his appearance to the performance, and Gu Mingyu, with his fiery temper, couldn’t tolerate it. Someone even challenged him openly, saying, “If you didn’t have connections, who would be willing to serve you?”

This incident revealed to everyone that Gu Mingyu’s popularity had been artificially inflated all along. The contestants who had remained silent couldn’t stand him anymore, and even those who hadn’t said a word were secretly looking down on him.

Gu Mingyu was so furious during the rehearsal that he announced his withdrawal from “Youth Without Limits” and left. He probably went to find Fan Xing directly.

After He Qingmo explained the situation, Fan Xing had nothing to say. He had initially thought that Gu Mingyu was making a fuss for no reason and causing unnecessary trouble, but he didn’t know about all these twists and turns behind the scenes.

Fan Xing let out a soft sigh. “Gu Mingyu’s temperament probably doesn’t suit that industry. If he could tolerate it and rely on his own talent after successfully debuting, wouldn’t that be better? It’s a pity for your kind intentions, Brother.”

He Qingmo didn’t seem to mind and said, “I’m not that kind-hearted. I originally planned to let him rise to the top and then make him fall during the finals.”

“What?” Fan Xing was momentarily stunned, trying to understand what the man meant. “So, Brother, you were planning to help him climb to the top and then make him lose during the finals?”

“Yeah. That kid needs to be taught a lesson so he’ll remember,” He Qingmo admitted his intentions without any reservations.

Fan Xing saw the man’s slightly regretful expression and couldn’t help but chuckle. “Why bother competing with him, Brother? He’s just a spoiled child. In fact, he doesn’t have a bad heart.”

He Qingmo didn’t share the same sentiment, but he didn’t want to discuss this matter any further, so he directly pulled Fan Xing upstairs to change his clothes and go out.

Early the next morning, the He family came to visit Fan Xing. They had all come to check on him. Even though He Qingmo had said that Fan Xing was fine, it was still a car accident, and everyone was worried. So they came to see him in person.

The women in the family, upon seeing the burn on Fan Xing’s eye, were all filled with concern. They also noticed that he had lost weight during his illness. The maternal instincts within them emerged, and even though they were not skilled in cooking, they tried their best to prepare meals for him. Despite often needing Fan Xing’s help in the kitchen, he felt a warm sense of care.

The feeling of being cared for by someone was quite nice.

Fan Xing, being only eighteen and having excellent recovery abilities, had almost completely healed from the burn near his eye after a few days of staying at home.

That’s when He Qingmo arranged for Fan Xing to be taken back to school.

As Fan Xing had expected, Fan Meixi wouldn’t give up until she saw him. He had just reached the dormitory building when he saw Fan Meixi waiting there.

He felt somewhat helpless. He wasn’t sure how she knew he was returning to school today. Had she been waiting here for the past few days?

But there was no escaping this. So, when Fan Meixi saw him, she welcomed him with a pleasantly surprised expression and invited him to have dinner together. He didn’t refuse.

The two of them went to a restaurant near Qing University. Fan Meixi started ordering dishes and, as usual, asked him what he wanted to eat.

Fan Xing shook his head and said, “I’ve already eaten. Just a glass of water for me.”

Fan Meixi, looking at him with a menu in hand, paused and looked at him. His attitude was somewhat cold.

She gazed at him with apologetic eyes and a hint of regret and self-reproach in her tone. “Fan Xing, Mom is sorry. Mom was wrong. Can you forgive Mom this time? Mom loves you, it’s just that on the night… you might not know the situation, and I…”

“Mom, what’s the matter with you finding me?” Fan Xing interrupted her, his voice soft but clearly conveying his reluctance to talk further.

Fan Meixi was taken aback. It was the first time she had seen Fan Xing like this, and it caught her off guard.

These past few days, she had called and messaged Fan Xing, but he had not responded. She thought it was because He Qingmo was angry and didn’t want Fan Xing to contact her. After all, she had seen just how angry He Qingmo was that night at the hospital.

She never expected Fan Xing to not want to see her.

“Fan Xing, Mom really knows she was wrong. You should…” Fan Meixi tried to salvage the situation, and her smiling face had lost its charm. Her eyes showed a sense of urgency and pleading.

In the past, Fan Xing would patiently listen to her even if he knew she was being insincere. But now, he simply said, “No need. I know why you came to find me. To put it simply, the agreement between us was that I would agree to marry He Qingmo and help you secure the contract with Gu’s Technologies. In return, you would give me money until my grandmother’s health fully recovers. I’ve already fulfilled my end of the deal, and the rest is not my concern. If you’re worried that He Qingmo will be angry and cause trouble for the Gu family, let me handle it. You don’t need to ask for his help; it’s not part of our agreement.”

“Fan Xing…”

“I also hope Mom won’t try to threaten me with my grandmother’s medical expenses anymore. If I speak up, He Qingmo will help me. But if it comes to that, it means Mom has broken our agreement. I will also break it. At that time, whether He Qingmo continues to cooperate with the Gu family or not will depend on you,” Fan Xing interrupted her again.

Fan Meixi stared at the assertive young man in front of her, completely caught off guard. All the carefully planned words and responses she had prepared were useless now.

She had no bargaining chips left.

Fan Xing’s biggest weakness was that he only had one family member, his grandmother. She was his bottom line, and he could tolerate anything for her. But now, this bargaining chip was no longer in play.

Not only that, but after witnessing Fan Xing’s accident and seeing how nervous He Qingmo was, Fan Meixi was well aware that if Fan Xing were to break the agreement and divorce He Qingmo, He Qingmo would definitely put the blame on the Gu family.

Could they expect him to help the Gu family then? He might be even harsher than anyone else.

Fan Meixi had never dreamed that Fan Xing would be so resolute in his stance. She looked at him, opened her mouth to say something several times, but ultimately didn’t know what to say.

Fan Xing had already stood up from his seat and slightly bowed to her. “Mom, I’m leaving. In the future, there’s no need to contact me, and I won’t bother you either. Goodbye.”

After saying this, he took fifty yuan from his wallet and left it on the table to cover the cost of his glass of water. Then he turned and walked away.

Leaving the restaurant, Fan Xing felt considerably lighter. He realized that some things, no matter how close or important they seemed, didn’t belong to him, and the best choice was to let them go. Just like the blood relation between him and Fan Meixi, he had thought that blood ties were something inherent, unbreakable. But in reality, the only thing he couldn’t let go of was that faint glimmer of hope deep within his heart.

Fan Xing returned to the dormitory after ten o’clock, only to find that his roommates hadn’t returned yet.

It wasn’t just their dormitory; all the dormitories in their major were dark.

It had only been a few days since the start of classes, and everyone’s enthusiasm for learning was so high that they were going to the library at night?

Fan Xing found it strange.

It wasn’t until eleven o’clock that his roommates returned, drenched in sweat. They immediately surrounded him, shouting “Snow White.”

Fan Xing had already taken a shower, so he backed away from the three messy-looking guys, looking puzzled. “What are you guys saying?”

The three of them grinned and said, “We’re calling you Snow White. We’re all Snow White’s guardian angels, the three dwarfs.”

It turned out that their major’s freshman welcome party was going to feature a modified version of “Snow White.” But female students were a rare species in their major, so in Fan Xing’s absence, the whole class unanimously decided that Fan Xing should cross-dress and play the role of Snow White.

When Fan Xing heard this news, his face turned pale. “How… how can that work? There are female students in the class, aren’t there?”

Qin Xiuming replied, “Those few female students also participated in the vote and agreed that you were the most suitable for the role. Xiao Xing, you have to believe in your looks; you’re absolutely perfect for the role of Snow White. Oh, by the way, we’ve already brought your costume back, so hurry up and change so we can see.”

With Qin Xiuming’s words, the other two immediately joined in the excitement, taking out a golden wig and a princess dress from somewhere. They closed in on Fan Xing, trying to help him change.

Fan Xing, quick to react, hurried onto the balcony and locked the door. Unfortunately, the glass door could only be locked from the inside of the dormitory. Fan Xing, standing on the balcony, could only grip the door handle, but his strength couldn’t match that of the two outside.

So the door opened, and the three “dwarfs” surrounded him, holding the costume. They had mischievous grins on their faces, and one of them said, “Xiao Xing, will you change on your own, or shall we help you?”
