Chapter 37

“Don’t, don’t, don’t!” Fan Xing instinctively hugged his clothes tightly, fearing that these unscrupulous guys would get handsy. After a moment’s thought, he chose a compromise and tried to reason with them, “How about this, tomorrow I’ll go to rehearsal with you, and we can discuss it then, okay? I’ve already taken a shower, and changing clothes now means I’ll have to shower again. Also, have you looked at the time? If our dormitory is still lit, the dormitory supervisor will definitely scold us.”

The power of the dormitory supervisor was quite real, and the group of roommates exchanged glances and gave up on helping Fan Xing change. Instead, they lined up to go to the bathroom to freshen up.

However, Fan Xing, who had escaped this ordeal, didn’t feel particularly happy. He couldn’t understand why they had chosen him, a male student, to play Snow White when there were female students in their class. Moreover, they didn’t even consult him.

While he was feeling down, He Qingmo called.

“Brother, have you arrived home?”

He Qingmo had dropped him off at school, and it took about two hours to drive back from Qing University. Calculating the time, it was about now.

“Yeah. What’s wrong? Why do you sound down?” Fan Xing’s voice was low due to his frustration. Men had sharp ears and immediately detected something amiss.

Fan Xing sighed helplessly and recounted the situation where he was forced to play “Snow White.” He couldn’t help but complain, “Our class has female students, so I don’t understand why they decided to choose me, and they didn’t even consult me.”

The man on the other end of the phone chuckled softly, “But you’re definitely better looking than them.”

Fan Xing was taken aback for a moment, but a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Although he said, “Really? Just a few days ago, you said I had become ugly.”

“Well, you’re still better looking than them,” the man’s tone was confident.

Fan Xing didn’t notice that his smile was getting brighter as he asked, “So, do you think I should do it?”

“Well… it’s up to you. If you really don’t want to, then refuse. But…” the man spoke with a breathlessness, paused for a moment, and then softly added, “I’d really like to see it.”

When the man said the last few words, his voice was low, as if he was whispering into Fan Xing’s ear.

Fan Xing’s heart inexplicably skipped a beat, and he replied softly, “But you won’t be able to see it.”

The man on the phone seemed to sigh in regret and said, “Right, you won’t. In that case, don’t do it and let someone else have the opportunity.”

Fan Xing was amused by his teasing. “You’re really something. I’m going to sleep now. You should get some rest too.” With that, he hung up the phone but couldn’t let go of it for a while. A sweet smile lingered on his face.

“Hey!”

It wasn’t until Qin Xiuming suddenly reached over and waved his hand in front of Fan Xing’s eyes that he was startled. He quickly placed the phone on the table and prepared to go to bed.

Qin Xiuming, full of curiosity, didn’t want to let it go. “Xiao Xing, don’t sleep yet. Tell me the truth, are you in love? You were talking to your boyfriend on the phone just now, right?”

“No, it was my brother! And why do you assume it’s a boyfriend? If I were in a relationship, wouldn’t it be a girlfriend?” Fan Xing climbed into bed and gave Qin Xiuming, who had just showered and still had wet hair, a gentle shove. “Don’t drip water on my bed.”

Qin Xiuming, in his gossip mode, wasn’t in the mood to answer his questions about “German orthopedics.” Instead, he immediately told Lou Zirui, who had just arrived, that Fan Xing had a boyfriend.

Now, the three of them surrounded Fan Xing, asking questions.

Fan Xing denied it, but they didn’t believe him. Annoyed by the incessant questioning, Fan Xing pulled the blanket over his head and refused to speak.

Now the three of them were at a loss. They couldn’t just lift his blanket, could they? So, they eventually dispersed and went to bed.

Under the blanket, Fan Xing felt puzzled. Why did both He Qingmo and Qin Xiuming assume he was talking to a boyfriend when he was on the phone? Was there something different in the way he talked to He Qingmo compared to others? Well, he didn’t think there was anything different; perhaps he was just a bit more nervous when talking to that man, who always liked to tease him, and that made him a little uncertain.

Anyway, after thinking for a while, he gave up trying to figure it out and decided to sleep.

The next day, Fan Xing participated in the rehearsal. Not to challenge He Qingmo, but because he had already promised Qin Xiuming and the others. Besides, the freshman welcome party was scheduled for Friday night, and now that everyone else’s roles were almost ready, his refusal would have a significant impact.

However, he had one condition: he would not change into women’s clothing during rehearsals. He would only change on the actual performance day. After all, his face was there for everyone to see, and there was no need for makeup tests or anything. Otherwise, their class wouldn’t have reached a unanimous decision on this matter.

So, his condition was easily accepted.

Next came the script rehearsal.

After Fan Xing received the script and glanced through it, he realized it had been quite heavily modified. Snow White was no longer the simple, beautiful character from the fairy tale but had been transformed into the modern “cool-girl” protagonist.

The story didn’t follow the timeline of the original fairy tale. Instead, it began with the princess being maliciously killed by her stepmother. With the help of seven dwarfs, the princess was revived, and then the story revolved around her seeking revenge against her wicked stepmother. The prince was now a minor character in the play, unable to comprehend the princess’s feelings for revenge and ultimately left in solitude, unable to resonate with her. The princess’s final romantic choice was one of the seven dwarfs.

After reading the script, Fan Xing couldn’t help but feel both amused and bemused. The story had undergone a radical transformation. However, he admitted that the changes added a fresh perspective to the narrative, and the scriptwriter’s humor made some dialogues quite funny. There were also several plot twists that were unexpected and intriguing. If they could pull it off, Fan Xing believed it would be a great success.

But there was one catch in the script: the princess’s ultimate choice of love was kept a mystery. When Fan Xing saw this, he felt a bit itchy inside and went over to ask the student director responsible for the play.

The director student rolled his eyes upon hearing Fan Xing’s question. “I’d love to decide, but look at those guys.”

Fan Xing followed the direction of the director’s gaze and saw Qin Xiuming and the other male students who played the dwarfs gathered together, engaged in an intense discussion. None of them were willing to back down.

“Just those guys. From the moment the script was introduced until today, they’ve argued countless times about who should be the princess’s true love, each thinking they are the most suitable. Hey, I can’t control them. Why don’t you go talk to them?” The director student seemed exasperated.

Fan Xing watched the group, all red-faced and determined, and decided it was better not to get involved in this mess. He turned to leave, intending to find a quiet place to rehearse his lines. However, the group of dwarfs came to him.

The seven of them approached Fan Xing with enthusiasm, surrounding him.

“Xiao Xing, tell us, who do you like the most? It’s definitely me, right? I was the first to discover you, saved you, and brought you home, isn’t it?” Qin Xiuming said.

“Old Qin, I don’t want to hear you say that. According to your logic, I should be the one you like the most. Ask Xiao Xing, when he cried, who was there with him? Who comforted him and offered a shoulder when you scolded him?” Yu Cheng protested.

“Humph, if it weren’t for me being too sad and stumbling when carrying the coffin, causing the poisoned apple to fall out, Xiao Xing would have died. I saved his life. How can you say otherwise?” Lou Zirui chimed in.

The others joined in the debate, all insisting they were the ideal choice for the princess.

Fan Xing was overwhelmed by the bickering and quickly raised his hand to stop them. “Um, can you listen to me for a moment?”

Although his voice was not particularly loud, it had a natural allure. The quarreling group immediately fell silent, their eyes locked on him with an expectant look, as if saying, “You will definitely choose me, right?”

Fan Xing chuckled and said, “Actually, I have an idea. Hear me out. I think it might be good to keep it according to the script. What do you think?”

“What do you mean?” Qin Xiuming asked. “The script hasn’t been decided, that’s why we came to discuss it with you.”

Fan Xing smiled and explained, “What I mean is, why don’t we just leave it undecided? Keep it as a suspense for everyone to guess. It could add a layer of intrigue and enjoyment for the audience.”

“Ah, can we do that?” The group seemed disappointed.

The director student, however, coldly replied, “I think it’s a good idea. Let’s go with that.”

The student director was obviously tired of their endless arguments, and with only two days left until Friday, they didn’t have much time to spare. So, he decided to end it with this suggestion.

Furthermore, Fan Xing’s proposal was not just to appease the bickering group; he genuinely thought it would add an interesting element to the play. He was curious himself about the final romantic choice of the princess, and he believed the audience would appreciate the suspense.

Though Qin Xiuming and the others seemed a bit disappointed, they understood that continuing the argument wouldn’t lead to a resolution. They reluctantly accepted the decision.

The following days allowed Fan Xing to focus on rehearsing. He had limited time, only two days, and a significant number of lines to memorize, as he had interactions with almost every character in the play.

Fortunately, the lines were in English, and Fan Xing had an exceptional memory, allowing him to handle the task.

On Friday afternoon, they held their final dress rehearsal, and the result was quite satisfactory. Everyone was pleased with the performance. After that, the actors had to change into their costumes and get ready for the official performance in the evening.

Fan Xing had been delaying dressing as a woman, but he couldn’t avoid it any longer. He was finally dragged into the temporary dressing room by several girls from his class.
