Chapter 38
Qin Xiuming and the others wanted to enter the dressing room to get a sneak peek, but they were all kicked out by the girls who wanted “Snow White” to make a stunning appearance, blinding them with her beauty.
Fan Xing couldn’t understand it at all. What was the big deal about changing clothes and wearing a wig? It was still his face, so how different could it be?
It was only later that he realized he had been too naive.
After being at the mercy of the girls for a full hour, pinned to a chair, he looked at himself in the mirror and felt like he didn’t recognize the person staring back at him.
In reality, there hadn’t been much change to his face; it was just modified slightly to fit the Western princess character. He had blue-colored contact lenses, and some light makeup was applied. However, after the transformation, Fan Xing felt like he couldn’t find himself in the mirror anymore. The reflection looked like that of a real girl.
The girls responsible for his makeover seemed to be going crazy. They were all busy taking photos with their phones, fearing that his new look would be exposed before the performance. They were excitedly discussing how perfect it was that Fan Xing played this role, and some even jokingly said that if he were a real girl, he would undoubtedly be the school’s beauty queen.
One of the girls even approached Fan Xing and asked if he had a boyfriend, mentioning that she had a handsome brother and wanted to introduce them.
Fan Xing was left bewildered. “You guys are exaggerating, aren’t you?”
“No, no, no,” the girl insisted. “Xiao Xing, you truly don’t have a correct understanding of your own beauty. Let me tell you, if you go out like this right now, those guys in Qin Xiuming’s group will have their eyes pop out. Don’t believe it? Let’s go out and try.”
As she was about to pull Fan Xing out, he suddenly had an idea. He handed his phone to the girl and said with a sweet smile, “How about you take a picture for me?”
Fan Xing’s sweet smile, combined with his current soft, feminine appearance, charmed the girls. They enthusiastically agreed and began taking photos of him.
After the photos were taken, Fan Xing took a look and thought he actually looked pretty good. He casually opened WeChat, clicked on He Qingmo’s name, and sent the picture. After sending it, he suddenly felt a bit at a loss.
Why did he send the picture to He Qingmo?
Panicking, he tried to cancel the message, but He Qingmo’s response had already arrived. “Hide it, don’t let others see!”
Huh?
Fan Xing hesitated for a moment, not sure how to respond. Meanwhile, the girls around him were urging him to go outside. So, he decided not to respond and simply pocketed his phone before heading out.
Initially, Fan Xing thought the reactions of the girls in his class were a bit exaggerated. However, when he left the dressing room and encountered the boys from their class, he realized that the boys’ reactions were even more extreme. They were practically drooling over him.
The atmosphere of amazement reached its peak when he made his official stage appearance. The audience started taking out their phones to capture the moment. Even those who didn’t know the truth about Fan Xing thought their medical school had finally produced a campus beauty.
Luckily, the performance itself was excellent. After the initial shock, the audience’s attention shifted to the story’s unexpected twist. It wasn’t until the very end, when Snow White confessed her love, that the audience’s focus returned to the unresolved question of who she would choose. The audience began speculating on which character would end up with Snow White, and it became a topic of discussion. Everyone’s attention was on Fan Xing.
As Fan Xing’s gaze moved across the crowd, he noticed that the answer was about to be revealed, creating a sense of anticipation. However, when he looked in a certain direction, he hesitated for a moment and quickly averted his gaze.
As the curtain slowly fell, the narrator announced, “The End.”
Is that it? Who did Snow White choose in the end?
Because of this cliffhanger, the audience was preoccupied with their speculations, and nobody paid attention to why Fan Xing had acted the way he did at the end. Instead, they assumed it was a clue about Snow White’s choice.
Backstage, Fan Xing’s heart was still racing, and his face turned inexplicably red.
He didn’t make a mistake. He had indeed seen He Qingmo in the audience just now.
Since the audience’s attention was focused on the ending, no one had noticed that there was someone extra at the side of the stage, which happened to be He Qingmo.
This position was very close to the stage, and when Fan Xing was looking in the direction of Qin Xiuming, his gaze accidentally met He Qingmo’s eyes.
For a moment, Fan Xing was taken aback because he hadn’t expected He Qingmo to be there. Then he remembered his appearance and felt a bit embarrassed. Moreover, the way He Qingmo was looking at him made him unusually nervous, so he quickly averted his gaze.
Fortunately, the performance was almost over. If He Qingmo had been there from the beginning, Fan Xing would have been too nervous on stage.
However, what if He Qingmo had actually been there all along?
Just the thought of He Qingmo watching the entire performance made Fan Xing feel quite uneasy.
He Qingmo was definitely up to something. He hadn’t mentioned coming when they exchanged messages before the performance, and now he surprised Fan Xing.
“What’s wrong with this man? Does he enjoy scaring me?”
While Fan Xing was nervous for a different reason, everyone else was excited because of the successful performance. They gathered to share their thoughts and experiences, and, naturally, they wanted Fan Xing, the lead actor, to join them.
But Fan Xing was in no mood for that. He just wanted some time to calm down, so he politely declined and decided to go to the restroom alone.
However, as soon as he left the backstage area, someone grabbed his wrist. A teasing but pleasant voice came from behind him, “Little junior, why are you all alone? Should big brother accompany you?”
Fan Xing turned around to find He Qingmo standing there, his eyes openly admiring Fan Xing’s current appearance.
Fan Xing, already flushed from the teasing, couldn’t help but feel embarrassed. He lowered his head and whispered, “Are you doing this on purpose again?”
At that moment, they heard footsteps approaching from the distance. He Qingmo pulled Fan Xing to exit from a different direction. His tone was light as he said, “I had to come to see my beautiful wife. I was worried someone might notice you.”
Fan Xing sighed, “You…” He couldn’t help but think that He Qingmo was just playing with him. He was exasperated. But he quickly realized that He Qingmo was already pulling him out of the auditorium.
Fan Xing hurriedly held onto He Qingmo, asking, “Where are we going?”
“Home,” He Qingmo replied casually.
“Now?” Fan Xing was worried. “Let me go back and change my clothes first. Going out like this would be really weird, even for a girl, let alone me. I don’t want to be the center of attention.”
Moreover, going out with He Qingmo would probably lead to them trending online again.
He Qingmo looked back at him and said, “No, it’s fine. I think you look great.” Then, he firmly led Fan Xing outside.
Fan Xing hesitated for a moment, wondering if he should resist. By the time he made up his mind, he and He Qingmo had already left the auditorium. He Qingmo took him to a secluded path hidden behind a grove of trees, and there were no streetlights.
Fan Xing was surprised because he had been to the auditorium several times but had no idea about this hidden path. It seemed that hardly anyone used this path even during the daytime.
“Did you discover this when you were a student here?” Fan Xing asked.
“Yeah,” He Qingmo replied.
Fan Xing couldn’t help but chuckle. “It seems that you weren’t a good student. This path is so hidden, and it leads outside the school. It’s obviously meant for skipping classes or preparing for a night out.”
He Qingmo teased, “Well, it’s also possible that I used it for dates.” He continued, “You probably don’t know, but this path is known as ‘Lover’s Lane.'”
To prove his point, several couples appeared from the bushes nearby, holding each other closely and not being bothered by the unexpected guests.
Fan Xing felt even more embarrassed than before. He quickly pulled He Qingmo and said, “Brother, let’s walk a bit faster. We don’t want to disturb them.”
He Qingmo, who was being obediently pulled along, didn’t seem to mind. He remarked, “I think they are the ones disturbing us.”
Fan Xing sighed and said, “It’s the same thing, isn’t it?”
The man thought for a moment and nodded, saying, “You’re right, it’s not the same. These kids are just playing house; most of them will break up after graduation. It’s better to get married and make it official.”
Fan Xing felt that the man was teasing him again and decided to ignore it. He pulled He Qingmo, and they hurriedly left the area where the couples were gathering.
However, when they reached the end of the path, the small iron gate was locked.
Fan Xing turned to He Qingmo and asked, “What do we do now?”
He Qingmo raised an eyebrow and said, “Climb over it?”
“What?” Fan Xing was astonished and thought he must have misheard.
It wasn’t that Fan Xing had a problem with climbing over the gate, but he felt that it was a bit incongruous with He Qingmo’s current status. After all, He Qingmo had been honored by Qing University and was often invited as a distinguished guest for events like school anniversaries and other major functions. Climbing over a gate on a late night like this didn’t seem appropriate.
However, He Qingmo made it clear through his actions that it was suitable. He swiftly and skillfully climbed the gate, showing that he had done it countless times during his school days and had developed muscle memory for it.
“Come on, wife, I’ll catch you!” He stood on the other side of the gate, arms slightly extended, ready to receive Fan Xing.
Fan Xing was initially concerned about his attire and thought that climbing over the gate might be challenging. However, after seeing He Qingmo’s gesture, he suddenly felt determined. With a proud tilt of his head, he said, “I don’t need your help!”
Then, he began to climb over the gate by himself.
The gate wasn’t very high, and under normal circumstances, Fan Xing would have done it as neatly as He Qingmo did. However, today, he was wearing a skirt, and while climbing over, he had to be careful not to get it caught. This made him appear a bit clumsy.
As a result, after carefully securing the skirt to prevent it from getting caught, when he jumped down, his hair got tangled in the gate.
Usually, pulling a wig off wouldn’t be a big issue, but they had used a lot of hairpins to secure it to his natural hair to ensure it didn’t come off easily. This made it painful for Fan Xing, as the wig was tightly tangled with his own hair, causing a tingling sensation in his scalp. He quickly covered his head.
“What’s wrong?” He Qingmo approached and saw the golden hair tangled in the gate.
Fan Xing wanted to untangle it himself, but if he turned around, the hair would get pulled tighter. He could only look at He Qingmo helplessly and said, “Could you please help me with this? This outfit is rented, and if it gets damaged, I’ll have to pay for it.”
He Qingmo found Fan Xing’s thought process quite unique. In a situation like this, most people wouldn’t be thinking about the cost of the outfit. They would have focused on getting the wig out. So, he smiled and gently pinched Fan Xing’s cheek. “What are you afraid of? Hubby can afford it.” Although he said this with a smile, he still reached out to help Fan Xing.
Fan Xing, with his back to the gate, leaned against it to give his hair some slack, while He Qingmo stood facing him, with his arms wrapped around Fan Xing’s body, ready to assist. This positioning made them look like they were hugging, and, in a way, they were.
Fan Xing’s face was almost against He Qingmo’s chest, and He Qingmo’s breath was close to his ear.
