Chapter 69

“Absolutely!” Fan Xing quickly interjected, “How could it not be worth it? As long as Senior Brother is fine, then everything is worth it!”

He knew that what Lu Chi cared about was him having to mention his father’s matter. Even though it was over the phone, Lu Chi should have sensed that he was forcing himself.

And despite all the persuasion he had given Lu Chi before, there had been no sign of him wavering. Yet, within a few minutes of hanging up the phone, he had changed his mind. It was evident that Lu Chi was moved by Fan Xing’s reluctant revelation.

Fan Xing was genuinely scared to bring up that past, having never mentioned it in all these years, not even to his grandmother. But today, because of his coercion, he had convinced Lu Chi. He felt it was worth it!

Lu Chi stared at him for a moment before shaking his head with a wry smile.

Forget it, this was just Fan Xing. How else could he be called a silly fool?

“How’s Xiao Yu?” he asked.

A hint of worry flashed in Fan Xing’s eyes, “He was rushed to the hospital immediately. He should still be in surgery. If there’s any news, they’ll notify us.”

He patted Lu Chi’s shoulder gently and reassured him, “Don’t worry, we’ll get the best lawyer for you. Although we can’t argue innocence, we’ll do our best to minimize…”

“No need. Let things take their course,” Lu Chi said nonchalantly.

He hadn’t been afraid of even death before. If it weren’t for Fan Xing making him realize at the last moment that there was someone who genuinely cared about him in this world, and he felt a bit concerned, he would have died already. What did he have to fear about going to prison?

And besides, the fact remained that at present, regardless of whether Xiao Yu lived or died, Lu Chi’s situation could be construed as attempted murder.

If Xiao Yu died, then the charge of murder would be established.

Xiao Yu didn’t die, but it would still be attempted murder, and he could still be sentenced.

However, if Xiao Yu didn’t die, Xiao’s family might back off a bit. After all, from He Qingmo’s description, Xiao’s family wasn’t the type to muddle right and wrong. Otherwise, they would have come after Lu Chi already.

So, now they could only hope that Xiao Yu would survive and preferably without any lingering consequences.

At that time, perhaps, considering He Qingmo’s face, they might let Lu Chi off the hook.

But it all depended on how Xiao’s family explained the incident to the police today. If they reported it as an attempted murder, and the police filed a criminal case, even if Xiao’s family didn’t pursue it, things wouldn’t be easy to resolve.

If it was really like that, the police would probably find Lu Chi soon. Before the court sentenced him, Lu Chi might be detained.

Thinking about all this, Fan Xing’s slightly lifted spirits plummeted again.

But the things he was worried about didn’t happen. The police didn’t come looking for Lu Chi all afternoon, and in the evening, Song Yang called with good news – Xiao Yu had passed the critical period and was now in a regular ward. As long as he took the time to recover, he would be fine.

Fan Xing breathed a sigh of relief instantly.

From the current situation, it seemed that the police hadn’t filed a case on this matter. As long as Xiao’s family didn’t file a lawsuit, Lu Chi should be okay.

So, early the next morning, Fan Xing dragged He Qingmo to the hospital to see Xiao Yu.

Although the main purpose was to gauge Xiao’s family’s attitude, Fan Xing also knew that He Qingmo was undoubtedly worried about Xiao Yu.

Regardless of what Xiao Yu had done to Lu Chi, in He Qingmo’s eyes, he shouldn’t be sentenced to death.

Now that Xiao Yu was lying in the hospital bed, He Qingmo had to go see him.

When the two arrived at the hospital, it was still quite early, but Xiao Yu’s mother was already there, sitting by his bed and feeding him porridge. Her eyes were swollen, but she remained dignified when she saw Fan Xing and He Qingmo.

Not only did she thank He Qingmo, knowing that it was Fan Xing who had first discovered Xiao Yu’s accident and then informed them, she also bowed deeply to Fan Xing, expressing her gratitude. Fan Xing felt somewhat ashamed because he knew that he had been so anxious yesterday not because he wanted to help Xiao Yu, but simply to intercept Lu Chi.

As a result, Xiao Yu’s son was now seriously injured, and yet his mother was sincerely thanking him. Fan Xing felt ashamed to receive such gratitude.

So he quickly bent over even deeper than Mrs. Xiao, “Auntie, please don’t be like this. I actually didn’t help at all.”

She obviously didn’t have much energy, but she casually pulled him up and her voice was a bit hoarse, “Alright, let’s not be like this. Have a seat.” Then she continued feeding Xiao Yu.

Fan Xing’s gaze also fell on Xiao Yu lying on the hospital bed. In fact, he had felt something odd since they entered the room, and now he was more certain.

Xiao Yu was awake, albeit severely injured and unable to move, but he seemed to be quite clear-headed. However, from the moment Fan Xing and He Qingmo entered the room, he hadn’t given them a glance or any reaction.

While Mrs. Xiao fed him, he mechanically opened his mouth. Fan Xing even felt like he might not even know what he was eating.

“Is he still like this?” He Qingmo wasn’t particularly surprised. Song Yang had told him about Xiao Yu’s condition in detail after he woke up last night. Although he had survived, there might still be lingering trauma, and the hospital needed to continue monitoring him before drawing conclusions.

Mrs. Xiao nodded, “He hasn’t said a word since waking up. It’s like he just barely cheated death but lost his soul. It’s his own fault, he deserves to suffer a bit.”

While Mrs. Xiao said this, her eyes welled up again.

“Auntie, don’t worry too much…”

Fan Xing handed her a tissue, wanting to comfort her, but she interrupted him upon receiving the tissue, “I’m fine. I’m just distressed. Who asked him to be my son? But I also truly feel like he deserves it. Who asked him to do those harmful things? If someone’s child wants revenge on him, who can blame them?”

As Mrs. Xiao spoke, tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. She wiped them away and her voice was nasal, “Oh right, my husband said last night, now that Yu woke up, let’s just forget about this matter. Our family won’t pursue it anymore. We’ll just consider it as compensating that child. And please, ask that child to spare our Yu. Our family and him will be even.”

Fan Xing was stunned, looking at He Qingmo with disbelief in his clear eyes.

Was it really going to be let go like this? Xiao’s family wasn’t going to pursue it?

He had originally thought about probing for information and then having He Qingmo intercede, but they didn’t need to say anything. Xiao’s family had already decided on their own.

Although He Qingmo had mentioned before that Xiao’s family was quite reasonable, Fan Xing couldn’t have imagined that, with their heir narrowly escaping death, they would still be so magnanimous.

Seeing him looking confused, He Qingmo found it particularly amusing. Unfortunately, he couldn’t go forward and take advantage of the situation in front of others. He just winked at him and then turned to comfort Mrs. Xiao with some consoling words before pulling Fan Xing away.

On the way back in the car, Fan Xing still felt a bit dazed. He had thought this matter would be quite troublesome, but it was resolved so easily.

He simply couldn’t believe it and couldn’t help but tug at He Qingmo’s clothes, “Brother, pinch me to see if I’m dreaming… Ah…”

But before he could finish his sentence, the man obediently reached over and pinched his cheek, and not gently at that.

Fan Xing covered his cheek, glaring at him with resentment, but couldn’t help but burst into laughter again.

There was no way around it; he was just too happy, unable to contain himself.

“This is really amazing! Senior Brother Lu Chi doesn’t need to worry anymore. Oh, by the way, I need to call and tell him.” After saying that, Fan Xing quickly took out his phone and called Lu Chi, informing him of Xiao’s family’s decision.

On the other end of the phone, Lu Chi seemed quite surprised by the news. He remained silent for a while before softly responding, “Oh.”

Fan Xing could somewhat understand his feelings. Although Lu Chi hated Xiao Yu, where was he truly a heartless person?

Now that Xiao Yu had received his due punishment, Lu Chi was somewhat relieved of his hatred towards him. With Xiao’s family being so magnanimous about this matter, Lu Chi might even feel a bit guilty.

Just like Fan Xing felt somewhat burdened when Mrs. Xiao earnestly thanked him.

However, all of this didn’t matter anymore. What mattered was that this was the best outcome now.

So Fan Xing didn’t want to dwell on this matter any longer. He quickly ended the topic, “Oh right, Senior Brother, I’m going abroad to spend the New Year with my grandmother during winter break. You should come with us. You don’t have anything to do anyway.”

Fan Xing knew that Lu Chi had cut off contact with his family after starting university, so he definitely wouldn’t be going home for Chinese New Year.

Fan Xing didn’t want Lu Chi to spend the New Year alone in the school dormitory, so he wanted to invite him to go abroad with them.

However, Lu Chi refused.

“I’m not going. I don’t want to be a third wheel. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be busy during the winter break and won’t have time. Okay, I won’t talk to you anymore, we’ll talk later.” With that, he hung up the phone.

Fan Xing didn’t necessarily need Lu Chi to go with him, but he didn’t want him to spend the New Year alone either. Since Lu Chi wasn’t willing, he naturally wouldn’t insist.

Besides, this made He Qingmo happy.

“He’s quite discerning, this Lu Chi. I might consider letting him intern at the company.” He Qingmo felt immediately relieved when he heard there would be no third wheel.

Fan Xing made a face at him, “Senior Brother, he might not even want to go.”

At this point, they had arrived home. Fan Xing pushed the door open to get out of the car, but as soon as his feet touched the ground, everything suddenly went black before his eyes, and he couldn’t stand steadily.

He quickly grabbed onto the car door to steady himself.

“What’s wrong?” He Qingmo quickly got out of the car and came over to inquire.

Fan Xing lightly tapped his head and shook it, “Nothing, maybe I haven’t been sleeping well lately because of exams. I feel a bit dizzy.”

It wasn’t just a bit dizzy. In just a moment, He Qingmo noticed that Fan Xing’s face was as white as a sheet, and his lips were devoid of color.

He immediately picked him up and carried him into the house, then called Dr. Zhang.

Fan Xing felt he was being a bit exaggerated and quickly took the phone to speak, linking arms with him and smiling sweetly, “I’m fine. I just felt a bit dizzy for a moment. Look, I’m perfectly fine now, right? It’s probably just because I haven’t been sleeping well. I’ll feel better after a good night’s sleep.”

But the man still frowned, looking rather serious.

Fan Xing puffed out his cheeks and assured him, “I promise I’ll feel better after a good night’s sleep. If my complexion still isn’t good after I wake up, we can call Dr. Zhang to take a look, okay?”

Only then did He Qingmo relent and carried him upstairs.

Fan Xing was indeed very tired. He had been busy with exams recently, worried about Lu Chi, concentrated all day yesterday, and got up early today, so he fell asleep within minutes of getting into bed.

He Qingmo lay down next to him, but didn’t feel sleepy at all.

Seeing that Fan Xing had fallen asleep so quickly and peacefully, he felt a bit relieved. At least it showed that the little guy was really tired.

What made him even more relieved was that when Fan Xing woke up, his complexion had returned to normal.

“I told you it was just because you hadn’t been sleeping well, right? Look, you’re fine now.” Fan Xing was refreshed after a good night’s sleep, his stomach started rumbling, so he got up and pulled He Qingmo downstairs to prepare dinner.

He Qingmo had the foresight to call Aunt Wu before going to bed, so when they came downstairs, Aunt Wu had already prepared dinner.

Seeing them come down, Aunt Wu immediately arranged the dishes on the table.

Fan Xing graciously thanked her and sat down with He Qingmo to eat.

Strangely, even though he was very hungry, he suddenly lost his appetite when faced with the delicious spread on the table. Not only that, his stomach felt sour and he felt a bit nauseous.

Had he caught a chill in his stomach? He was puzzled.
