Chapter 14

As the piece concluded, thunderous applause erupted outside, with everyone cheering. Then, a clear yet somewhat soft voice spoke up, “I wonder how the audience feels about my rendition of ‘The Ling River Maiden’?”

Though posed as a question, the tone carried a strong sense of confidence and arrogance.

Soon, a melodious female voice responded with admiration and excitement, “Truly deserving of the title of the top musician, Master Tianyin. Miss Wan is truly convinced. As per our agreement, this musical score belongs to you.”

It seemed there had been a competition outside earlier.

Upon hearing the mention of the top musician, Master Tianyin, Murong Qiufeng’s eyes sparkled with excitement and eagerness to encounter a worthy opponent.

“It’s Tianyin.” He suddenly stood up, uncommonly losing his composure in front of Shangguan Ye, then turned to leave, eager to witness the renowned top musician.

Naturally, Shangguan Ye noticed all the changes in Murong Qiufeng’s expression, his brows furrowing even more tightly, his eyes growing darker.

Murong Qiufeng had already opened the door and stepped outside. By now, the inn was filled with guests, and on the second floor with them, across from where they sat, stood a man embracing a qin, holding a blue book, about to return to the private room.

Murong Qiufeng hastily spoke, “Are you Master Tianyin?”

The intended-to-turn man paused upon hearing his voice, turning in confusion to face Murong Qiufeng, raising his elegant brows slightly with an air of pride. “Indeed, I am. How may I assist you, sir?”

As the two men faced each other from a distance, Tianyin was acknowledged for his exceptional looks and talent. Although his face was covered by a red veil, his enchanting peach blossom eyes hinted at his undoubtedly remarkable appearance.

But Murong Qiufeng’s appearance, known for his twin sister Murong Qiuyun, the number one beauty of Yan Nation, was also extraordinary. However, what captivated others about him was not his appearance but his temperament—ethereal, elegant, and pure, like a lotus flower untainted by the world.

Shangguan Ye, attracted by his eyes and demeanor, saw Murong Qiufeng’s looks as satisfactory but not exceptionally captivating. In terms of appearance, there were others similar to him whom Shangguan Ye had encountered.

Dressed in white like snow and red like fire, their gaze locked, creating a subtle yet undeniable tension.

Tianyin narrowed his eyes slightly, a hint of coldness flashing as he felt an unusual threat upon seeing Murong Qiufeng for the first time. It seemed that with Murong Qiufeng’s presence, the attention and favor that once belonged to him would be taken away.

Murong Qiufeng, however, was solely focused on music theory. “I’ve heard that Master Tianyin’s musical talent is unmatched. Today’s performance truly lived up to that reputation. Although I’m not talented, I’m also a lover of music. I wonder if I have the honor to exchange insights with Master Tianyin.”

Murong Qiufeng didn’t intend to compete aggressively; he only wanted to communicate and learn.

But to Tianyin’s ears, it sounded different. “You want to compete with me?” He lifted his chin slightly, his tone carrying a hint of mockery, feeling a desire to trample this person underfoot.

Upon hearing this, Murong Qiufeng felt something was off. He wanted to explain, but the crowd below erupted into excitement, drowning out any chance for a clear conversation.

Murong Qiufeng, who disliked noise, frowned.

Tianyin’s mouth curled with disdain beneath the veil. “So, you dare not? Before the competition even begins, you’re already admitting defeat. If you know your limits, don’t try to show off; you’ll only embarrass yourself.”

The crowd joined in with taunts, and Murong Qiufeng clenched his lips, feeling not so much for his own pride but for the disrespect shown to music. He felt both sorrow and anger at the music being treated this way.

“Tianyin, you’re unworthy of being the top musician. You’re unworthy to play the qin. I pity your instrument,” he said calmly but with suppressed anger and disappointment, before turning to leave.

His calm yet restrained words stunned everyone present.

Tianyin’s expression darkened, his face turning somewhat livid. Then, with a sneer, he mocked, “I’m unworthy? And are you worthy, a person who dares not even accept a challenge? You’re not qualified to say such things.”
