Chapter 44

This entry is part 44 of 64 in the series The Overindulged Male Wife

These past few days, He Changning was clearly in a low mood—sometimes even irritable. He locked himself in his room every day, refusing to let anyone near him except Shang Yushang. He wouldn’t eat, buried himself under the covers, kept the curtains drawn, and completely shut himself off.

Shang Yushang handed over all his company affairs to Da Zhou and the executive directors, devoting himself entirely to staying home with He Changning. Since the day he’d told him about the pregnancy, he hadn’t brought it up again. He just stayed by his side every day, coaxing him, holding him, watching over him. If He Changning didn’t sleep, he stayed up with him. If he just lay there in bed, he lay next to him. Quiet, patient, unwavering. The only time he was forceful was when He Changning refused to eat—then he’d bribe, coax, threaten, even go so far as to say that if Changning missed one meal, he’d skip three. So although He Changning had lost some weight, it hadn’t reached the worst-case scenario.

He Changning knew deep down that his behavior wasn’t right, that it was childish. But he just couldn’t get over it. He had been a man for twenty years—then one day, out of nowhere, he’s told that not only is he still a man, but he can get pregnant too? If he could accept that immediately, he’d have to be out of his mind. He was frustrated, didn’t want to talk, didn’t want to sleep, didn’t want to eat—he just wanted to lie there, eyes shut, mind blank, forcing himself not to think about it. But damn it, he really wanted to scream—what kind of sick joke was this?! What kind of messed-up situation was this?!

Still, no matter how much he resisted or fought it, the fact remained—he had to face it. But he truly couldn’t imagine himself walking around with a belly like a woman’s, living life as if it were normal.

Shang Yushang had stayed by his side these days, not leaving for a second. Even though he said nothing, He Changning could clearly see the worry and tenderness in his eyes. That was exactly what made him feel torn—so much that he wished he could knock himself out and forget it all. He even despised himself for having this ostrich mentality.

But fate wasn’t done messing with him. After days of torturing himself, He Changning finally fell ill. In the middle of the night, he came down with a high fever, his whole body burning like a cooked shrimp, his breath hot to the touch.

Bai Mo was urgently called over. After injections and medicine and a whole lot of fuss, the fever finally broke around dawn, and He Changning drifted off to sleep.

Bai Mo sat in a chair by the bed, holding a cup of coffee, watching as Shang Yushang wiped the sweat from He Changning’s forehead again and again. He couldn’t help but smirk. “Yushang, you’ve really gotten addicted to playing the doting husband—doing everything yourself.”

Shang Yushang didn’t even look at him. “Then why don’t you dump Su Yang if you’re so capable?”

Bai Mo nearly choked on his coffee. “Cough—damn it, could you not hit me with a jab every time?”

Shang Yushang frowned. “Keep your voice down. My wife just fell asleep.”

Bai Mo rolled his eyes. “Wife, huh? That’s what you’re calling him now?”

“Jealous? Want Su Yang to start calling you wife too so you’ll feel better?”

When it came to being sharp-tongued, Bai Mo was no match for Shang Yushang, so he wisely changed the subject. “By the way, don’t tell me you still haven’t told your wife that he’s actually pregnant?”

Shang Yushang let out a nearly inaudible sigh. “He’s already struggling to accept the fact that, as a man, he can get pregnant. If he finds out he’s already carrying—not just one, but two babies—I don’t even know how he’ll react.”

“You can’t keep it from him forever. We got lucky this time—the babies are fine. But if he keeps this up, he’s going to hurt them, and himself too. You better think this through.” Bai Mo couldn’t help but grumble. “I’ve never seen anyone spoil their spouse like you do. You give in to everything.”

Shang Yushang saw no problem with doting on his partner. “Changning’s a man, and yet he’s willing to marry me—that’s already a blessing for me. If I spoil him to the heavens, that’s my duty. Besides, he’s carrying my children. When the two little ones are born, if he wants them to take his surname, I won’t object.”

Though He Changning appeared to be sound asleep, his fluttering lashes told Shang Yushang he was awake. Without opening his eyes, he reached out and wrapped his arms around Shang Yushang’s neck, pulling him in and burying his face into the crook of his neck. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his voice muffled. “Jianzhi… I’m sorry for making you worry.”

Feeling warm tears in the hollow of his neck, Shang Yushang’s heart clenched as he held the little one tighter, gently comforting him. “Baby, it’s okay. I’m here, I’m always here. Don’t think about anything. I’ve got it all covered.” He kissed He Changning’s forehead softly, soothing him. “Changning, just focus on being well. Your husband will do anything you want.”

He Changning sniffled and responded in a muffled voice, “Mm.”

Shang Yushang pulled out all his tricks to comfort He Changning like coaxing a child. As long as his wife was happy, he’d do anything.

Watching the loving couple, Bai Mo started missing his own little lover and quietly slipped away.

Worried about He Changning’s health, Shang Yushang coaxed him into eating a bowl of porridge, then held him close until he fell asleep peacefully in his arms.

He Changning didn’t wake up until the afternoon of the next day.

Shang Yushang gave him water and fed him again and again until he was full and satisfied.

He Changning tugged Shang Yushang to lie down beside him, leaning into his chest before speaking slowly. “Am I really pregnant?”

Shang Yushang felt a flicker of tension, afraid he still couldn’t accept the truth. He instinctively tightened his arms. “Changning, don’t be scared.”

Sensing his worry, He Changning felt warmth in his heart. “I’m fine. I just wanted to hear it from you.”

Shang Yushang took a mental deep breath and went all in. “Yeah, Changning, you’re pregnant. With twins.”

He Changning stared at him in shock, eyes wide. “Shang Yushang, you damn stud. Most people only get one—of course you had to knock me up with two! You horny bastard. If these little monsters give me trouble, I’m gonna make you suffer. You better be mentally prepared, asshole.” He gave him a fierce glare, but venting made him feel a lot better.

Shang Yushang was stunned for a long moment before his mind caught up. He locked his eyes on He Changning, not daring to believe what he’d just heard. “Changning, y-you’re saying you’ve accepted it? You’ve accepted the pregnancy?!”

He Changning rolled his eyes. “What else could I do? You want me to abort them? They’re my own flesh and blood.”

Shang Yushang was ecstatic. “Changning, baby!” He planted loud kisses all over He Changning’s face. “I’m so happy. Changning, Changning…”

He kept calling his name, as if that were the only way to express how overjoyed he was.

After two days of bedrest, Shang Yushang finally allowed He Changning to get up and move around. Wherever Changning went, he followed—hovering protectively, like a shadow. He was terrified something might happen the moment he looked away, driving He Changning half mad with his paranoia.

Not just He Changning—everyone in the house was on edge. The young master had given strict orders: no one was to come within three steps of He Changning, and absolutely no one was allowed to touch him. He was treated like a fragile porcelain doll, held carefully in Shang Yushang’s palm.

Eventually, He Changning couldn’t stand the overprotective hovering anymore. He called Bai Mo over to help him give the 220-IQ CEO a crash course on pregnant—not women—husbands.

Shang Yushang sat up straight with the seriousness of a student awaiting a lecture, making He Changning feel a little embarrassed. “Jianzhi, relax a bit.”

Bai Mo chuckled. “Don’t worry about him, Changning. Let him get properly educated—it’ll be good for him.”

Su Yang, who came along, tugged on Bai Mo’s sleeve. “Don’t push your luck. If you annoy him, he’ll take it out on you.”

Bai Mo immediately changed his tone. “Yangyang is right. I won’t stoop to his level.”

He Changning rolled his eyes, and before he could say anything, Shang Yushang chimed in, “Those who ask for it get what’s coming.”

He Changning let out a snort of laughter but quickly held it in, worried Bai Mo would feel awkward. Shang Yushang remained expressionless and said, “Baby, if you want to laugh, just laugh. Holding it in isn’t good for the baby.”

Bai Mo and Su Yang nearly burst out laughing—this was too much. You can’t pamper your wife by building your happiness on someone else’s suffering. That’s just asking for divine retribution.

Once the moment passed, Bai Mo shifted into his professional doctor mode and carefully listed all the things a pregnant man should pay attention to. He told Shang Yushang not to get too worked up—just go with the flow. There was no need to be overprotective, just make sure he didn’t fall or bump into anything.

Shang Yushang had full trust in Bai Mo’s medical ethics. He carefully turned all the important points into a document and generously invited the couple to stay for dinner before seeing them off.

After bathing his wife and getting him clean and cozy under the covers, he cleaned himself up and slipped into bed, still warm and damp from the steam. Wrapping his arms around his wife, he gently caressed his small belly as they chatted. “Eight more months, and we’ll see the little ones.”

Having accepted the reality of being pregnant, He Changning felt much more at ease. “Yeah… I wonder who they’ll look more like.”

“Doesn’t matter who. As long as they’re yours, they’ll be perfect.”

He Changning looked at Shang Yushang with a soft smile. “You’re easy to please. But the kids will grow up eventually. You’ll need to give them proper identities.”

Shang Yushang hugged him tighter, his broad warm palm rubbing his back. “Leave that to me. I’m sorry you’ll have to put up with some things.”

“I don’t mind. As long as the kids are fine, I’m fine.”

Kissing his baby’s cheek, Shang Yushang felt a deep sense of satisfaction. “Both of them should have your surname. Or at least one.”

He Changning didn’t really care about the surname issue. “No need for that, it’s a hassle. They can take your surname—I don’t mind. But what are you planning to tell Grandma?”

“I’ll just tell her the truth. Grandma’s not your average old lady—she’s sharp. There’s no need to hide it from her. Once she knows, a lot of things will be easier.”

He Changning scratched his nose uncomfortably. “I just worry if she finds out I can have children, she’ll think I’m some kind of freak.”

“She won’t. She’ll be too happy to even think about that.”

“Let’s hope so.”

“Don’t worry about it, baby. Just focus on staying healthy for the pregnancy. I’ll take care of everything else.”
