Chapter 119
Su Bin quickly walked to the medical building. He stood outside and sent a text message to Allen: “I’m here.”
M University’s medical building was constructed in the late 19th century. The red brick architecture was the most important architectural form in B country at that time and has a history of over a hundred years, appearing ancient and mysterious.
Su Bin waited downstairs for about ten minutes before receiving a reply from Allen: “Having an impromptu meeting, just go upstairs.”
— Huh? Upstairs!
Su Bin was startled. He had come to the medical building to find Allen several times before, but each time, Robert’s car would arrive shortly. He would get in first, and Allen would come down a few minutes later, and then they would go home together… He hadn’t gone inside even once until now.
Access control in the medical building was relatively strict. Allen’s department was in the research section, and one had to have an ID card to enter and exit freely.
Feeling anxious, Su Bin walked in holding his phone. He had thought the interior of the medical building would be as old-fashioned and heavy as the exterior, but to his surprise, the inside was very modern, equipped with advanced devices such as infrared sensing doors, elevators, and motion-sensor lights.
He explained his purpose to the receptionist, a woman in her thirties wearing tortoiseshell glasses. Glancing at the wall clock, which showed that it was close to six o’clock, almost time for them to leave work, she asked, “Do you have an appointment?”
Su Bin hesitated. “Um, sort of…”
The woman gave Su Bin a cautious look and dialed the extension number. A few seconds later, she coldly informed him, “Sir, sorry, Dr. Lewis didn’t answer his phone, and he’s not in his office.”
“I know, he’s in a meeting,” Su Bin checked his phone and hesitated whether to show it to her, “He asked me to go upstairs directly.”
“I’m sorry, sir. Without direct instructions from the doctor, I can’t let you in…” Just as she was speaking, the receptionist’s phone suddenly rang. After saying “Sorry,” she answered the phone — “Yes, that’s right, it’s a Chinese man… Okay, I understand.”
It seemed that Allen had called her. Su Bin breathed a sigh of relief.
After hanging up the phone, the woman gave Su Bin a more severe look, then the electronic door to the visitor’s passage opened. “Dr. Lewis told you to go directly to A-601,” she said to him.
Su Bin hurriedly escaped from the woman’s gaze, wondering, “Do I really look like a suspicious person?”
Entering the elevator, Su Bin thought that A-601 should be on the sixth floor, but after looking for a while, he realized that the control panel only had the highest floor he could press was “5”!
Pressing the fifth floor, as the elevator ascended, Su Bin’s heartbeat began to accelerate. For some reason, he felt that this building was a bit eerie.
With a “ding,” Su Bin cautiously stepped out. He looked for the stairs near the elevator, but unfortunately, he only found the emergency staircase leading downstairs, not upstairs!
He took out his phone, thinking of calling Allen for help, but then remembered that Allen was in a meeting, so he gave up and walked alone to the corridor leading to the offices on the other side.
It was a room separated by frosted glass walls. Most of the rooms were lit, and one could vaguely see several blurry figures moving inside.
Scenes from horror movies like “Resident Evil” and “The Island of Dr. Moreau” instantly popped into Su Bin’s mind…
Shivering all over, he carefully glanced at the room number of the nearest room to the elevator, which was A-510.
That means A-601 should be above A-501, right? So as long as he found A-501, he would be fine! Thinking so, Su Bin groped along the corridor step by step. 508, 506… Huh, why were they all even numbers?
Su Bin recalled the receptionist’s look just now. Could it be that she intentionally gave him the wrong room number to scare him?
No, Su Bin shook his head and plucked up his courage to continue forward. The rooms ahead were dark, with light from other rooms spilling over, casting shadows of human skeletons inside…
Ah, why would Allen work in such a terrifying building!
With goosebumps all over, Su Bin hurriedly walked back. He thought it would be better to wait for Allen downstairs. Being frightened here was not good!
Just then, several men in white coats suddenly walked out of a room beside him. Su Bin’s whole body stiffened, frozen in place like a caught thief.
The men also noticed him and looked at Su Bin with suspicion. One of them asked coldly, “Who are you? Who are you looking for?”
Su Bin was stunned for a second, then quickly said, “I’m looking for Dr. Allen Lewis.”
The man paused and then asked, “What’s your business with him?”
“He’s in a meeting and asked me to wait for him in room A-601, but… I can’t find it.”
“Wait a moment…” The questioning man softened his tone a bit and went back to the glass room. He said inside, “Allen, there’s a boy looking for you.”
Su Bin: “…Oh, so Allen was inside!”
…But why did he call me a “boy”? Do I look that young?
Watching Allen, also dressed in a white coat, come out from inside, Su Bin’s heart skipped a beat. It was the first time he had seen Allen dressed as a “doctor.” Su Bin suddenly remembered the scene where Allen had given him an injection with a mask on… This image of Allen made him inexplicably nervous.
“The receptionist didn’t tell you how to get to A-601?” Allen frowned as he walked over.
Su Bin stiffly shook his head, feeling somewhat indignant.
Allen personally led him over. The two of them went back in the direction of the elevator and stopped in front of an inconspicuous dark-colored door.
Su Bin was taken aback for a moment. He had seen this door just now, but the style here was completely different from the glass area he had seen before. He had thought it was a storage room!
Allen pushed open the door, revealing another door inside, with a metal plaque engraved with “tower” hanging on it. Below, in smaller font, was the room number note — A-601.
“How come there are two doors in a row?” Su Bin asked.
Allen replied, “This area is the ‘tower’ section, so there are fireproof compartments.”
“Is the tower the part that sticks out from the outside?” Su Bin asked curiously. “Is this your office?”
Allen answered the first question with a “yes” and then said, “This is not an office; it’s my exclusive lounge.”
Su Bin: “…”
Allen continued, “Wait here for me. I’m receiving a Swiss expert. It’ll probably take another half an hour.”
Su Bin nodded apologetically. “Sorry for bothering you.”
Allen stared at Su Bin for a few seconds, then took out the keys from his pocket and went out, closing the door behind him.
Then Su Bin heard the sound of the door locking… It’s locked?
After about a minute, Su Bin walked over and tried turning the doorknob…
“…” It was indeed locked!
Damn it, why lock it? I’m not going to run around. (╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻
Su Bin put down his backpack grumpily, turned on the lights, and wandered around the tower.
The room was circular, with two floors. The first floor had a sofa, coffee table, washroom, and dining area… Allen usually had afternoon tea here, right?
On the right side of the entrance, there was a small and delicate spiral staircase leading to the second floor, where there was a single bed and a bay window with a view.
The buildings in M city weren’t tall, so the tower parts of the buildings were usually the highest. Su Bin could almost overlook the entire university area from here.
Thinking about how Allen had such a luxurious lounge like a studio all to himself while working, Su Bin sighed. It was truly an emperor-like treatment!
Lost in his thoughts, Su Bin lay on the bed on the top floor for a while before going downstairs again. He noticed that there were a microwave, a small fridge, a toaster oven, and a coffee machine in the tea room downstairs… Everything was there!
Looking at the time, it was already half-past six. Su Bin was afraid the frozen dumplings would thaw, so he temporarily put them in the small fridge. Then he called Yang Chengzhe.
Today was the Chinese New Year’s Eve, and Su Bin had originally planned to go home early and cook dinner for his roommates, but now it seemed like it was too late.
Yang Chengzhe said over the phone, “Allen called me around three in the afternoon and said he booked a table for dinner tonight. Didn’t he tell you?”
Su Bin recalled that was exactly the time he forgot to call Allen back. “Yeah, he’s in a meeting now, and I’m waiting for him.”
“Okay,” Yang Chengzhe chuckled, “Then Jin Fei and I won’t wait for you. Let’s meet directly at the restaurant later.”
Allen didn’t keep Su Bin waiting for too long and came back soon. He was about to take off his white coat when he saw Su Bin’s nervous look. “What’s wrong?” He unbuttoned his coat and walked over.
“You look so strange in this…” Su Bin stared blankly at him, his heart beating faster and faster.
“Where’s the strangeness?” Allen suddenly squinted his eyes, reached out, and pinched Su Bin’s chin, leaning in to kiss him.
“…” The impact was too strong, completely immune!
“Hehe…” Allen didn’t know what Su Bin was afraid of, but he liked Su Bin’s current state.
“Change your clothes quickly and let’s go. It’s already late!” Su Bin urged with a flushed face.
“…” Forget it, I’ll tease him another time…
In Robert’s car, Allen indeed mentioned about going to the restaurant together. At the same time, Su Bin suddenly remembered the frozen dumplings he left in Allen’s lounge.
“I’ll bring them back for you tomorrow,” Allen said casually.
“How do you usually deal with lunch?” Su Bin raised the doubt he had when visiting the lounge, because besides the coffee machine and kettle, everything else seemed to be brand new, and Allen had many food restrictions and was quite picky about food. He shouldn’t choose to eat fast food, right?
“I order some simple meals from restaurants, like sandwiches or pasta,” Allen said.
“Wouldn’t you get tired of eating the same thing?” Su Bin asked.
“I’m used to it, and there’s nothing else available,” Allen replied.
After hesitating for a moment, Su Bin suggested, “How about I make a bento for you in the future?”
“A bento?” Allen looked at him in surprise.
“Yeah, I’ll make it at home, put it in a lunch box for you, and you can heat it up at noon… Uh, I saw you have a microwave, so…” Su Bin explained.
Allen smiled as he looked at him. This guy, is he trying to make up for forgetting to call this afternoon?
He seemed to be getting better at knowing how to please him.
